  1. I've been a huge Weeks critic, but if he can finish with a .375/.475/.850 line and play atleast average defense, i'd say extended him. $2.45m in 2009, with two arby years left (2010 and 2011). Would a 4/24 deal get it done? (buy out 2 years of arby and 2 years of free agency?) from a counting stats perspective he really hasn't done that much in his 4+ seasons in the league and this is a down market. 4/24 is pretty close to what we offered Bill Hall a few years ago, but Hall was coming off a massive season that Weeks has never really had 3.75m (2010) 5.25m (2011) 6.75m (2012) 8.25m (2013) maybe throw in a 10.0m (2014) with a 2.0m buyout as a kicker? This is a BIG if, because in my mind, Weeks with a below .800 OPS doesn't have much value to me, but signing a .800+ OPS Weeks for 4/24 is a much better use of resources in my opinion that signing Hardy to a 5/75 deal it would probably take to keep him here, especially if Weeks keeps playing well and Hardy doesn't quickly get into .800/.850 OPS range
  2. could use some peeps in the chat room! yah for baseball http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. sorry to bump my own thread, but this board is usually a wealth of knowledge. Anyone have any input? THANKS!
  4. I am very happy with the way out team is playing right now, but if this trend holds, it appears we're going to have a great deal of close (or one run) games this year. With Braun day to day with back stiffness, Mike Rivera on the DL, and Counsell getting some starts at SS due to JJ's slow start I think we're especially weak right now in situational batting (1st and 3rd, 2 outs, pitcher spot up). These are the stats of our bench thus far: C Counsell .278/.381/.333/.714 36 AB M Rivera .308/.286/.462/.747 13 AB C McGehee .222/.222/.222/.444 9 AB C Duffy .125/.263/.188/.451 16 AB B Nelson .000/.053/.000/.053 18 AB The question is, is this a small sample and we can expect these numbers to improve or do we currently have a handful of AAAA players who are on the 25 man because we don't want to start the Arby clocks, don't feel our better prospects are ready defensively, or we simply can't afford to spend any money on our bench (thus no Edmonds, Graffy, etc.)
  5. The guy went 43 (i believe) scoreless innings before giving up an earned run this weekend. He's 5-0 with something like a 0.50 ERA. I know we tossed his name alot in the offseason, and he appears thus far to be this year's "it pitcher". EDIT: Just looked it up, and he signed a 4 year contract extention prior to this season, so there really is no reason for KC to trade him unless they are blown away with an offer. Looks like we (and other) teams missed the window on this one.
  6. Haha, my mom could break out her Graffy t-shirt again as well!
  7. So after doing the "15 minutes to save 15% on car insurance", i've discovered that through either progressive.com or USAA that I can reduce my rates from about $72/mo to around $47/mo. The only question is what liability limits i should carry. I am insuring a 3 year old Pontiac Vibe. I have a clean driving record (no tickets, no accidents), am older than 25. What would you recommend for insurance limits? Bodily Injury Liability- Currently $300k/$500k per person/per accident Property Damage- Currently $100k Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists- $300k/$500k per person/per accident Medical Payments- $25k per person Comprehensive/Collision- $500.00 deductible I've decided i didn't want the "extended benefits" for death/disability (isn't this covered by the liability coverage? i have my own disability coverage through work) and the amount is small anyways I also decided to keep the roadside assistance, but figure the "rental car" coverage is a waste of money I know there has been a push to increase liability limits (increasing to $1,000,000 is probably about a $4-5/mo difference. Would love to have everyone's $.02 TBWS
  8. I realize its only been 5 starts so far this season, but 4 of the 5 have been great, and Yo looked absolutely amazing today. The question is, at what point do the Brewers try and lock him up? My first thought was the offseason (Winter 2011) where we still controlled him for two more seasons. I hate to extend a long term contract to a pitcher (more than four years), especially one that has yet to pitch a full MLB season, but I also realize the more MLB success that Yo has, the higher the price will be. Assuming he gets a raise to $600-800k next year, and likely $6-8 million in arbitration in 2011, what type of contract would be neccesary to buy out 2 years of arby and 2 years of FA? Yo will be 27 when he becomes a free agent. Locking him up through 2 years of free agency would mean the Brewers control his 27-29 or "peak" years. I'm not advocating we sign him now, or even this offseason, but I'm really excited about his potential and really don't want to go into his walk year without an extention. Would 4/50 in 2011 be enough? Assuming he develops, he could be another 7/140 pitcher in about 2013 and beyond our price range.
  9. I'd ask for the reigning AL MVP in return
  10. Braun has 10 bb (versus 12k) through 16 games, meaning he would draw 100 walks at this pace. Assume 600 AB (700 PA) and a .300 BA... he could reach the magical .400 OBP Has he turned the corner, or simply walked more due to his torrid pace this week?
  11. Neat idea, is the Dew Deck exclusively reserved for BF.net members that night? How many people does the section hold?
  12. looks like this movie is getting outstanding reviews on RottenTomatoes.com 7 Reviews in 100% Fresh Rating
  13. *cough* Brett Lawrie *cough* In all seriousness, i want Rickie to succeed, but i still haven't seen anything to show me that he's an above average MLB 2B. Even in the years of Vina, Belliard, etc a .275/.350/.450/.800 line was expected. If Rickie can't do that with atleast average defense, i think we need to move on in the offseason.
  14. Great Thread! So i've been thinking... how many people really have a 6 month "emergency reserve". Does that include money set aside for retirement? For example, i'm a school district employee, so I am part of the Wisconsin Retirement System. I'm trying to set aside $5k/year in a Roth IRA (assuming i get a possible promotion). I'm also putting funds into a 403b (trying to bank 10% of my gross salary (403b + Roth). I figure the 10% WRS + 10% 403b/Roth gives me a really good start on retirement. However, i'm stilling paying off a huge chunk of my student loans. I figure if I get aggresive with the 403b/Roth, loans/investments will end up being about 50% of my net income (at present). I don't yet own a house, have 25 payments left on a 2006 car purchase. I figure i'm doing everything right (short of having student debt), and wondering how some people with kids (i don't have any) manage to build a rainy day fund. I figure I could put all of that 50% against my student loans, but that would probably take 5-6 years to pay off my loans. I don't want to wait that long to start saving for retirement. It will be hard to start a rainy day fund until my student loans are paid off. Ugh, anyways, keep the thread going. Thanks to everyone who has shared insight so far

  16. Hey Guys- I'm planning to start an "investmnet club/group" with about 8-10 fellow coaches this spring/summer, and was wondering if anyone had an experience/advice to offer. I know a few people that have participated in something similar (we're going to invest about $1K/person (probably about $10K initially as a group), and maybe use E-Trade, TD Waterhouse, or something similar. I'm not from that industry, so i'm not sure what legal documents we need to file etc. If anyone has any advice, i'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks, TBWS
  17. and the hits just keep on coming http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I've gotta shake my fists with pride http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Take it from me, girlfriends pretending to be pregnant is NOT a cool april fools joke
  18. First thing I did when I woke up was scan the board to see if anyone else had planted the "bait"... no takers, so I decided why not. Guess whoever continues the tradition next year will have to spell the prospect's name right... Thanks for the props. I figured 7ish was late enough for real news to have been announced and figured most people wouldn't be awake yet when they clicked on the thread. Though, if it was a legit trade, there would be 100 pages of responses by now (see CC thread)
  19. For SP Jake Peavy. Sources inside ESPN, including infamous baseball tonight sportscaster, Whoa Solvd, have confirmed that the deal was completed late Tuesday night as the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres make final preparations for the upcoming season. The Brewers, citing a logjam at the shortstop position, and a desire for an established anchor in the rotation, rolled the dice for the extremely talented righthander. Peavy will be the third Cy-Young winner to pitch for the Brewers in the past two seasons setting a new high water mark in the Brewers efforts to place an elite team on the diamond. Reached by phone early Wednesday Morning, owner Mark Attanasio said that the clubs efforts to already sell 1.75 million tickets for the upcoming season provided evidence that Milwaukee would again draw 3,000,000 fans to watch a competittive club. In small transactions, the club is expected to announce a contract extention for SS JJ Hardy, who is expected to sign a 4 year extention worth approximately $48 million. The team is also expected to come to terms with former ace Ben Sheets who has agreed to a one year contract worth $8 million. Sheets, not expected back to the All-Star break, will give the Brewers an elite 1-2-3 punch of Peavy, Gallardo, and Sheets that is expected to takeover front-runner status for the Chicago Cubs during the midseason classic. 20. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jon_heyman/03/30/strasburg.contract/index.html?bcnn=yes Wow, some people are delusional. Top picks EVER in 40 years get about $10 million, and Boras/this kid want $50 million before the kid ever throws a professional pitch.... in this economy. Wow good luck. If the Brewers somehow luck into him however with whatever pick we end up with 23?, i say we go for it http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I guess this is no less risky than signing and overseas player for $50 million, but could any player, much less a pitcher, be solid enough to warrant this kind of investment?
  21. Congrats on your good luck. I have a 9 pack (Outfield Field Box), but only got SRO tickets for opening day.... GRRRRRR the whole point of buying a 9 pack was for OD tickets! Oh well, i'll wise up next year, buy the 6 games i will actually make at face value, and then pay $150 for a good OD seat and still come out ahead. You'd think the Brewers would reward fans who spent $1200 on a 9 pack with some decent OD seats. For those wondering, we bought the nine back in early january
  22. Sadly, i'm sure these are just the first of many...
  23. With the stock market charging ahead today (and the past 2-3 weeks), maybe we're finally past the "bottoming out". Thanks for all the replys in this thread. I found this very interesting
  24. Please avoid political posts. They are not allowed here. This isn't any easy question, but i'm wondering what lengths people will go to protect their jobs or help their co-workers
  25. Doing some philosophical research here... Regardless of profession, in this economy, would you be willing to take a 5% pay cut to save your job or the jobs of your colleagues? Essentially the scenario is your boss comes to you and asks you to take a 5% cut so he/she can reduce the amount of layoffs that your school/business/organization needs to make. Would you say yes to save your job? Would you say yes to save your friend's job? Would you say yes to save the jobs of people you don't know but are supporting families? I like forward to your responses...
