  1. I think the point is to be open to trade whomever the trading partner deems their target for pitching. It isn't out of the real of possibility the trading partner could value McGehee more than Hart if they have a hole at 3rd Base and not in a corner OF spot. Or they could come to the same conclusion your posts do, McGehee is cheap and under control for a few more years unlike Hart. The Brewers have to listen to offers for anyone and can't declare guys like McGehee off limits if he is who a team wants, especially with Gamel waiting. No one is sayinig trade McGehee for a bag of balls and bucket of chewing gum but you have to give to get and trading from a position of depth (2 3rd baseman) isn't the worse thing if that is what a team wants.
  2. The handling of Gamel last year, the comments about getting Davis back in the rotation at the possible expense of Parra or Narveson, the begrudging use of Braddock or Axford when Hoffman was completely ineffective, the delay in getting LuCroy any playing time until it was obvious Kottaras was such a poor defender, Edmonds coming in a defensive replacement for Gomez, etc. Last year during September call ups, Macha even mentioned making sure Counsell got a lot of time off to help preserve his stats for such a great season. I rember thinking, "huh? Why does a manager care about preserving a guy's stats." Then he proceeded to basically still give Counsell starts over Escobar for Sept. and Oct. and for what purpose? The team was finishing out the string and should have been letting the young guys play. I don't have a problem if they keep thru the end of the year, I really don't get excited about some push to get Randolph or Sveum back in charge which could happen if Mach is let go in season. But if Macha plays out the string in the second have utilizing Davis and Bush in the rotation at the expense of letting Parra, Narveson, and any call ups pitch I will be disappointed and very concerned that going into 2011 the same questions will remain. Can any young guys pitch or pitch as effectively as some aging vet getting paid 8-10x more money and sucking money from the budget that could be used elsewhere.
  3. If the Brewers acknowledge they aren't a playoff team and become sellers this season I could see a managerial change going into next year. If they go the youth movement route, I think I would hope for a change in manager before next season. Brining up Gamel, possibly other pitchers, Fiedler potentially gone, letting go of Davis, Bush, Hoffman, Edmonds, etc. would make me rather see a guy who is a little more "youth friendly" or instructional bent rather than relying on veterans past their prime to play the majority of games, sitting quietly arms crossed in the dugout without a lot to say. I don't even know how comfortable Macha would be in that situation. If the Brewers are sellers and play the 2nd half of the season with a showcase of young talent strategy it will be interesting to see how Macha handles it.
  4. I agree and thought of Manny Parra. Isn't this one of the issues that gets brought up with him? He can throw 4 pitches but doesn't command them all well. Part of his more recent success has been focusing on locating the fastball and maybe not trying to fool everyone with a wide assortment of pitches. I think this was one of the things that Sabathia talked with him about back when he was here as well. Make sure you can throw strikes and get ahead in the count before trying to fool guys with junk off the plate.
  5. Probably because somewhere around 75% of hitters are right handed so they want the chance to play the matchup more often than not.
  6. Pitchleague, you still blacked out on 669-1? I've been watching the whole game on 669-1 here just outside Madison
  7. Is that because 7 of the top 10 teams are from the AL? Cincinnati is #3 in OPS (including the AL) and the Brewers have 12 games remaining against them alone so I don't think ESPN looked at the schedule very well if that was their blurb. The Brewers also have 4 with AZ who is #8 on the list. So I count 16 games vs. the top 10 OPS teams in all of baseball. Add in 3 more against CO and 3 more against Philly who are tied at #11 plus 4 with the Braves who are next at #13, and 9 vs. the Cardinals at #14 and you get 35 games vs. the top 7 NL OPS teams.
  8. Yeah, they mentioned in one of the recent games that everyone has tried to get Gomez to swing on a downward plane or something and hit more ground balls to use his speed (as if he is going to beat our routine grounders to the infielders, a la Willie Mays Hays). Schroeder said Sveum figured he may as well try something new since the old approach didn't seem to be working so well and is encouraging him to drive the ball more and swing upward. Gomez is certainly a big enough guy to have some power, his biggest problem is more plate discipline than the plane of his swing in my opinion.
  9. Wasn't Dave Bush originally schedule for this game? I could swear I saw him listed as the starter when I looked either yesterday or Sunday.
  10. Part of the delay in getting students into the stadium is the University's own fault for slowing down the process so much for student entry. My wife was a grad student a couple years ago when they had the stupid policy of basically walking in each student and filling the student section row by row. It took a friend of hers over half and hour to get to her seat so it didnt' really matter what time she got there unless it was an hour before kickoff. Plus I've never understood the angst by others over the arrival time of the students, they have the loudest section, stand up, have the best cheers, and are great in comparison to the dude behind me pounding Capt. Morgan's in his Dayne jersey who doesn't know jack about football other than complaining about every play call, ref call, tackle, coach, etc.
  11. Just ran across this article today - - apparently Leno's ratings since NBC moved him back to 10:30 and gave Conan the boot are worse than Conan's were. http://www.businessinside...tings-below-conan-2010-6
  12. Getting back to the main topic, I like Monty57's post. Even if the team could play .500 ball the rest of the year that won't be good enough to get in the playoffs so being a seller at the deadline makes sense. Trading any of those guys makes sense and playing the guys who will be around next year and the year after offers me more interest than seeing old veterans play. Getting Parra innings, Narveson, LuCroy, Axford, Gomez, Escobar playing time may pay off more in the future. Even calling up Gamel and or Cain if any of the Prince, Edmonds, Hart type players end up traded. Edit: Forgot to add, if they are sellers and bring up some young guys I hope Macha isn't allowed to keep them on the bench in hopes that winning 80 games keeps his job or looks so much better than winning 77 games or some such ratio. Parra needs to be in the rotation as a sink or swim now rather than always hoping his potential will pan out given spot starts and bullpen work. If LuCroy is going to be on the ML roster he needs to play more than 20% of the games, a 60/40 split with Kottaras would be OK (I know they are starting to lean this way) If Gamel or Cain are called up they should play more than 1x a week. Last year in September playing Counsell over Escobar in the meaningless games was kinda silly.
  13. There was a guide problem in the download overnight a week or more ago but that wouldn't affect a single channel. Basically, a reboot of the receivers was needed but the catch was it had to be rebooted 2x and many people stopped after one and the whole system didn't connect to the satellite so no channels worked. It only affected certain HD receivers as my SD DVR worked fine that morning which caused me to reboot the 3 HD DVR's a second time since I knew I was getting the signal on the SD DVR. Everything worked fine at that point. Later DirecTV sent out a signal rebooting everyone's receiver in the afternoon so that they would work again. I have read somewhere between 8 and 10% of certain HD boxes still had problems after that but it was complete loss of signal or connection not a single channel. Some rumors that it was the software upgrade to enable the 3D channel for ESPN but I received that update at least a week before the snafu. It seems that DirecTV was placing blame on some downloaded guide data from the Tribune Co. who generates all that stuff.
  14. I have watch both Angels series games on 669-1 on DirecTV and haven't noticed any issues with them not being in HD or there being no picture.
  15. On base percentage is not the only determinant of a lead-off hitters worth. Pierre projects to be worse than Rios, Konerko, Ramirez, Teahen, Pierzynski, Jones and Quentin. There's no reason to give your 8th worst hitter that many plate appearances. To Ozzie Guillen, Carlos Gomez and Alcides Escobar probably look like ideal leadoff hitters right now. As I said Rios and Konerko are batting 3 and 4, I could see Rios batting leadoff but not really Konerko. Looking at the updated Zips projections for these guys Pierre OBP .323 Ramirez .315 Quentin .321 Pierzynski .298 Jones .318 Teahen .331 Looking at that motley crew of suckitude I would still say Pierre isn't some glaring error. Teahen doesn't play everyday and is the only one projected barely better than Pierre at gettiong on base. If he picks someone else to bat leadoff at puts Pierre second there would be complaints there too, but the reallity is the lineup isn't very good and Pierre at leadoff doesn't really stand out as some horrible decision using projections or actual results. But then again there is satisfaction with using Corey Hart as some genius move in the #2 hole for the Brewers when he has a .317 OBP vs. RH pitching even with his hot HR month.
  16. Actually looking at the White Sox lineup, Pierre may well be the best lead off option. His OBP is .316 but there aren't a whole lot better options on that team. Rios is at .378 and Konerko is at .394 but they end up more as the #3 and #4 hitters. The only other guys better than Pierre are Andrew Jones at .340 but he doesn't play everyday and then the 3rd base combo of Teahen/Vizquel who are at .340/.318 in limited AB's. Out of the everyday players Pierre has the 3rd best OBP on the team.
  17. I don't think the Pac 10 was going to add Boise St., other than very recent and somewhat limited football success they don't really bring much else to the Pac 10. The Pac 10 wanted CU for the Denver market, I would guess they look at Utah for a 12th member, as good as Boise for football, better basketball, not sure on baseball and women's sports. What happened to the talk of BYU and Air Force to the Big 12? Was it just random rumors or any truth to that one? TCU would make a good fit for the Big 12 as well.
  18. I wouldn't exactly call Jamie Moyer a #2 starter, maybe on a team with pitching as bad as the Brewers but not in general and as was mentioned the one statistical anomoly of being able to stay in the leage at his age doesn't offset the argument. The argument of "not old" should be augmented with "not washed up" or "not living on past glories" or "not coming off a season or seasons where they got by by their fingernails in a big ball park with a great defense, etc." Those criteria may keep Melvin off the signing aging or aged pitchers with mediocre stuff and acting surprised when they age quickly in front of a weak defense, hitters ballpark and seemingly lose the ability to throw strikes as their BP pitches get hammered. The steroid era wasn't just for hitters - - how many aging pitchers benefitted from steroids or HGH and were able to keep pumping that mid 90's fastball or take the mound every five days without fatigue because of them. It is like a game of musical chairs and when the music stopped (sterooids) the Brewers may well be the ones left with out a chair or holding the bag (signing aging pitchers to longer deals or too much money in an era where pitchers will age faster than they did 5 years ago - - the anti money ball effect).
  19. The closest thing I could find to a rule tethering Texas and Texas Tech is in this SI article - - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andy_staples/06/13/expansion.sunday/index.html?xid=cnnbin Basically, back when the SWC realigned the Texas government pressured the Texas and Texas A&M to remain in the same conference as the other Texas schools. That is probably where the rumors I heard of Texas and Texas Tech being tethered together come from. I would imagine Texas would keep A&M as a non conference rival based on that history. I know of two friends who went to Texas A&M, netiher are big football fans but they get fired up and talk about that game every year.
  20. I have heard it mentioned that there is some rule or law in Texas that wherever Texas goes, Texas Tech also has to go. I have't been able to find a concrete source on that one yet. Texas A&M is free to go wherever, which is why they are the ones most often mentioned going to the SEC, especially if the PAC 10 added Colorado bringing them up to 11, then if they grabbed Texas, forced to take Texas Tech, and Oklahoma followed brining that conference to 14.
  21. I know what your saying Crew, I've noticed he looks lackidasical when chasing a rolling ball into the corner, I don't know if it is his running style, his being unsure of the bounce off the wall, or just lazy thinking it is a double no matter how hard he looks to be running. I don't recall him missing playing many fly balls or letting a lot of things land out of reach because of poor jumps. Corey Hart seems to make more of these types of plays. Braun doesn't coming flying to make many sliding catches or laying out types that people look for on highlight reels so he isn't going to be considered above average but he is no Carlos Lee statue or Brady Clark, heels on the warning track and let everything land in frront him either.
  22. I agree with everything you said Logan. For the right price I would trade anyone but Braun and Gallardo would be the hardest to pry away but even they could be had with an overwhelming offer. Other than that someone decent or with upside probably has to be included in any trade where the expected return is hoped to be better than the Mench, Johnny Estrada, Bush, Graffanino, Bell, etc. of the world.
  23. So judging by a few of these posts the only players anyone wants to trade are guys who aren't top flight players or guys who aren't all that special. The most common level of player you get in return for those types of players are guys who just aren't going to be that good either. The whole idea of trading is to improve a weak area of your team by trading a strong area, you can't expect to trade crap for good players with upside. Give to get is pretty much the mantra. So often I see these posts detailing how the team can't trade McGehee, can't trade Hart, can't trade Weeks, can't trade anyone except the bottom half of the 25 man roster and none of the minor league bats. What kind of return do you expect to get from a Villanueva or a Bush? Not much that will really help the team. Trading McGehee makes sense (if anyone would give up mush for him) in that if Gamel/Lawrie/Green/Cain are expected to reach the bigs where are they going to play if McGehee, Fielder, Hart, Weeks are all still around?
  24. ... Obviously his emotional well being is a distant 2nd to his playing future, but this obviously hurts his playing future a TON. HiAndTight, did you mean his playing futuer is a distant 2nd to his emotional well being or did you reall mean you think his playing baseball future is way more important than his mental well being? If so that seems pretty harsh and a mixed up view of priorities.
