  1. The largest contract in Brewer franchise history in terms of dollars/season was Ryan Braun's 5-yr extension of his initial extension to the tune of $105M - and I believe that includes some deferred money gymnastics. That was in the midst of his MVP season, before the PED crap came to light and while Braun was still in his mid-20's. That's pretty much the unicorn scenario for a small market team to throw a ton of coin at a player, who was willing to take a significant discount at the time for financial security. Strasburg, a talented pitcher with an injury-riddled career and obvious longterm concerns as he ages into his 30's, just signed for what could be 7 years, $245M. The difference between the haves and have-nots across MLB in terms of the ability to sign veteran free agents is so drastic it's comical.
  2. So they probably saved between $500K and $1M by nontendering him a week or so ago...that's a lot of hot dogs that don't need to be sold now to bolster that payroll! It may seem insignificant in the land of $100+ million contracts, but value is value. Stearns treats overpaying for a player like Aaron Rodgers treats throwing an interception. I don't disagree at all - I guess my point was that it was the smart move for him to be nontendered
  3. Too bad Mark A. couldn't get the Freddie Mac appraiser's report on the Brewers back in time to guarantee that quarter of a billion dollar loan in time to out bid the Nats sheesh that's a ton of money

  5. The guy I want is 1B Roberto Ramos from the Rockies. He's absolutely mashed throughout his minor league career, but apparently scouts think he's a quad-A player. Didn't they say the same thing about non-prospect Khris Davis who just never stopped hitting? Davis kind of did stop hitting in 2019, though...totally get the concept though.
  6. Then let them get beat in the first round like a 1-4 seed should do. There is no harm in giving a 5-8 seed a shot at knocking off a team in the 1-4 slots. Most years those 1-4 slots have losses of their own on their records so it's not like they are untouchable. I'd be a proponent of 6, with seeds #1 and 2 getting a 1st round bye...that guarantees that if all 5 power conferences actually have a team deserving of the playoff they get in, actually gives a spot for a non-power conference team if they ever reach the status of a Petersen-era Boise State, and also still puts a big incentive on being one of the top two teams after the conference title game dust settles. 8 I feel is too many - with 6, this year there would be the debate of which 2 get the by between OSU, LSU, and Clemson - and Oregon the Pac 12 champ finds a way in. Having a field of 6 this year would also shine the light on the travesty that ranking Georgia at #5 is after getting dominated by LSU and having that terrible loss at home against south carolina on their resume. I wouldn't give it to Wisky this year, because if you have 2 shots against a top team and lose both games to them, you shouldn't get a 3rd crack in a playoff scenario. But IMO Florida, Penn State, and Baylor all should be higher than Georgia in this last ranking.
  7. Silver lining...the badger performance tonight may wind up forcing OSU to play Clemson in the round of 4 instead of Oklahoma. That is going to be an awesome game - I dont care how bad Clemson's conference is, much the same was said last year and they blew the doors off Bama. And it's not scheme that separates the badgers and osu... or for that matter the entire big ten and OSU - they are just better either talent wise or experience wise than everyone else across the board. Depth is ridiculous, and 5 star recruits fight to get recruited by them. The badgers threw the kitchen sink at ohio state in the first half and if it weren't for fields fumbling inside the 5, fields missing a wide open td pass on their 2nd or 3rd drive, and taylor springing a big run on what was probably intended to be a half-ending run, the badgers would have trailed after after 2 quarters when they were playing as well as they could against the buckeyes.
  8. 4th and 2 and they run right at their all world d end with no blockers...yeesh
  9. Why are they handing the ball off here at all?
  10. Apparently they talked to wisconsin too....c'mon, it's not the refs - they gave the badgers 30 penalty yards on their last drive which basically was the only reason they had a fg opportunity
  11. Yeah, the slants are done now...gotta go seam routes Dangit - feels like they are just hanging on now
  12. Lucky there...fields has missed a few easy throws tonight
  13. I look at it as the commitee not wanting to put a team in the playoff without a qb if the alternative is the team that beat them for a conference title...in this case it would be Fields out with something that would obviously cost him playoff games - not just a balky knee that led to a badger win. Not wishing a bad injury by any means.
  14. So its pretty much "agreed" that ohio st still gets in even if they lose, but is there any realistic(or unrealistic) score that could conceivably knock them out? Exact copy for a 42-14 score? Pour it on for 56-7? I think a steamroll coupled with Fields not finishing the game due to injury. Otherwise the committee can't look past that illini loss even if they beat OSU. My thought for the badgers to have the best chance to win was to shut down the run game as much as possible and hope fields' knee led to him playing poorly. That has happened so far - but still a looong way to go and a thinned LB core is going to lead to big play opportunities for the Buckeyes if they can make them.
  15. Pretty sure it's more Clemson being damn good...they basically have an nfl roster. And I'm pretty sure fields is indeed pretty dinged - he's got no burst and doesnt want to run
  16. Yep, Oklahoma will get housed in a few weeks
  17. If georgia beats LSU today and clemson wins, who are you putting a hypothetical 1 loss badgers team in over assuming they win a close game against OSU, who already have a blowout win against the badgers? Probably OSU even though they'd be in the same spot they are in now. You have two Big Ten teams in this scenario, both 1 loss, they played each other and split their games. How do you not take the conference champion in that scenario? Because OSU blew the doors off wisconsin earlier in the year and they are easily a more talented roster. Plus they enter this weekend #1 in the committee's mind. They would do to wisconsin what the committee did to big ten champ Penn state a few years ago.
  18. I would be stunned if that game winds up within 4 scores...Clemson is rolling again, particularly on defense.

  20. Not sure who “we” are, but I thought the rotation plan last year of giving the youngsters a shot was both right & necessary. Our starting pitchers ended up the season with a 99 ERA-, so essentially league average & we made the playoffs, hard for me to classify that as a huge mistake. Bingo...1 out of 3 being really good actually is pretty decent odds for young starting pitching. It's too bad the other two crashed and burned last season. Maybe burnes or Peralta take that next step in 2020, and we find a vet starter or two that outperform chacin's dreadful 2019 output.
  21. SEC...and guess who owns that network...ESPN That's why WI would have had next to no shot even if they had beaten Illinois and only had the one blowout loss to OSU if georgia wins today.
  22. This pen is a poor return from Knebel away from being an unmitigated disaster. You have 3 known commodities and 1 is coming back from TJ within the year. Either you like these JAGs (just a guy) way too much or you don't value the pen at all. 2 of them in the pen to start the year, maybe. 1 sure. 5? Just cancel the season. To put it bluntly, I really like Perdomo and Andrews. Both lefties, both rack up high K/9 totals. Andrews has shown he can go multiple innings, and he has a decent bat. Devin Williams also looked good in Milwaukee, IMO. Feyerisen and Yardley are interchangable with the likes of Rasmussen, Supak, Roegner, File, Bettinger, Burnes, QTC, Black, Wahl, Faria. Heck, add Zach Brown if he bounces back any. To put it even more bluntly, that list really sucks if its guys who are supposed to be bullpen contributors following a Hader trade in 2020. That is far too many guys with zero mlb track record or marginal at best success in bullpen roles. In fact Hader's greatest value may be not getting traded so anything close to this idea doesnt happen next year. Sprinkle these guys in around Hader in very small doses, sure...but the reason the bullpen shuttle has been pretty successful the past few years is the fact Hader is in the pen to avoid exposing these other arms too much in late game winning situations. That's why I think Hader stays a brewer in 2020 and resumes his most valuable role of late inning shutdown reliever without having to also act as the only closer option. Hoping knebel is able to regain that role or perhaps a new addition.
