  1. Who had scored 5 and 6 runs against brewer pitching the prior two games...the Reds can hit and that ballpark is a bandbox...it's 1 start, but don't discount it entirely because the team Miley faced can't pitch. If he keeps walking guys he won't be around long
  2. I'd rather keep him at a familiar spot in the lineup around the #6-7 hole. Kind of acts like a 2nd leadoff down there and keeps his role more consistent - that said there aren't many better options than him at the top of the lineup with Cain not starting tonight. Probably jinxing it, but I feel like Santana gets off his HR goose-egg tonight...
  3. To be fair, a lot of the offseason potential moves get generated based on certain player contract status and perceived team needs/outlook - particularly when discussing players who wind up not being dealt at all (Sean Manea is another example). I think the Corbin rumors were spawned by people speculating the DBacks may have been looking to trim payroll in effort to try and retain JD Martinez in free agency and Corbin only had 1 more year of team control before becoming a FA - Looking at the pure baseball aspect of it makes that speculation far-fetched even back then, as it was obvious the DBacks wanted to contend this year and contending teams just don't put starters who gave them the 2nd most IP the season before on the trade block to save ~ $3.5Million bucks (Corbin made roughly $3.9M in 2017, $7.4 M this year). The Dbacks were willing to listen, but would've needed to be blown out of the water to deal him.
  4. Darvish against the Brewers in 2018 - Cy Yu Darvish against everyone else - Cy Yuck
  5. Weather forecast for Cincy today/tonight is mid 80's with a SW wind of around 15-20mph...kind of a right to left cross breeze but also blowing out towards left field. Healthy setting for scoring tonight based on the above conditions and bandbox ballpark regardless of who's on the mound, so I'm going to reserve judgment on Miley's 1st start.
  6. Further proof that being left-handed provides baseball's equivalent of 9 lives for a pitcher While he does have odd reverse splits, Drake is a righty whoops!
  7. Further proof that being left-handed provides baseball's equivalent of 9 lives for a pitcher
  8. If they catch lightening in a bottle with Miley starting, he might be a great flip candidate to a team that needs a starter to log innings (contender not required) when the time comes for Nelson to return a bit later this season - assuming continued health and successes of the other current starters. I agree this won't be a 1-2 start audition before dfa-ing Miley, otherwise he wasn't worth playing roster roulette with the 40 man to keep him around while he rehabbed that injury. Hope he's good, and I actually hope Drake hooks on with another team elsewhere...there really shouldn't be a spot for him in AAA with logan close to returning should he clear waivers.
  9. This. So predictable really. Beat teams they are supposed to beat (Padres). Lose maddeningly to teams better than them on paper (Cubs & Cardinals) and split against everybody else. 82-80. They could go 36-126 for all I care, just beat the Cubs and Cardinals, but it never happens. Its almost as if I've read this story too many times before. Seems like because it's the cubs beating them people jump off the ledge way too early...it's like the packers going 13-3 but losing twice to the bears, I guess. And aren't the brewers 3-3 against the cards this year and won the series against them last year? May will be a telling month for this team because they appear to have a tougher schedule and they don't have to play the cubs at all...if they are still at or near the top of the division when June arrives after facing tougher competition consistently, the first 8 games against the cubs this season will be even more of a blip. Plus, odds are that by end of may Knebel will be back and Nelson will be in the midst of rehab starts. They do have to play better against tougher teams, but it's not like they are getting their doors blown off every time they face a team many perceive to be better than them on paper. Most of their losses have been by 1 or 2 runs, and are due to a sputtering offense. Heck, they've been shut out half those losses. I'd honestly be fine with the brewers losing every game to the cubs if they beat everyone else at a .750 clip and still win the division.
  10. Maybe there were some rumblings but I don't remember anything mentioned other than here. Here you go... http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=36194 Houston sent four players to the Pirates to get Cole, 3 of which are essentially MLB ready but not considered elite prospects with high ceilings. However, the Astros are so loaded that Musgrove (RH starter who's currently rehabbing a recurring shoulder ailment), Moran (3B who would never see the field as an Astro with Bregman there), Feliz (power arm reliever off to a good start), and Martin (OF prospect off to a good start in AA as a 22 yr old) were all essentially expendable. The Brewers could've sent the Pirates a comparable package (Woodruff, T. Williams, Phillips, and Ray/Grisham) or one-upped them rather easily. I doubt Cole keeps this up for the next two seasons before reaching free agency, but he's definitely among the small # of trade/FA acquisitions that has been great to start 2018.
  11. Hader didn’t pitch in the Cubs series, so he’s pitched in 1 of the last 5 games, the same amount he would have had he been a starter. If he was a starter he would probably be pitching 5-6 innings every 5 days compared to the 3-4 he’s currently pitching every 5 games, isn’t that more valuable? not really when considering the 3-5 innings Hader's giving the Brewers are occurring over multiple games during that same time frame, and the outs he gets are always closer to the final outs needed to win close games. Having an eraser like Hader in the pen gives Counsell the continued quick hook option for starters without worrying about bullpen burnout. Imagine what this pen looks like after adding a healthy Knebel? Heck, I wouldn't even force him back into the 9th inning closer role - just continue with giving good relievers opportunities to get more than 3 outs and keep guys fresh. If a guy like Hader or Jeffress or Knebel comes in the 8th and is rolling, bring him out for the 9th.
  12. One offseason SP trade candidate there was some discussion on acquiring was Gerrit Cole - he's off to a fantastic start this season...
  13. 17-13 through April, 1 game out of first place...put that in a vacuum without knowing how we got there after facing the Cubs 8 of those games and not having Jimmy Nelson starting games and we're pretty much all happy campers. Another reason for an optimistic May...no games against the Cubs! They might go 24-3!
  14. Thanks, I needed a good laugh... Trying to figure out how it's middle relief to potentially record the last 8 outs of a 1 run game
  15. The Brewers are among the league's worst in terms of runs scored offensively - no other team with at least 29 games played is ranked below them, and only Baltimore/San Fran (28 games played), KC/Miami (27 games played), and Cleveland (26 games played) are ranked below them. I don't count the Twins since they've played 6 fewer games due to weather problems. Cleveland played most of its early season games in bad weather conditions for scoring runs, and the other teams are also off to putrid starts. If it wasn't for the pitching and half of the games coming against MLB 2018 dregs, the Brewers' record would be putrid right now, too. They are getting essentially zero production offensively from almost 1/2 their lineup (C, P, SS, 2B) - when the other positions don't hit well, this team gets shut down and makes life easy for opposing starters. If anything it's a continuation of last year's 2nd half offensive drought, and adding two good offensive players hasn't been enough to consistently bolster a lineup with too many offensive weaknesses up the middle.
  16. Sogard and Perez are viable utility options for a rebuilding MLB team not looking to contend and not looking to start prospect service clocks too soon. Replace them with a 2-player combination of Saladino, Broxton, Phillips, and Dubon and move on - at least that eliminates the insanity of giving those dreadful offensive players starts. Right now MIF is a black hole both offensively AND defensively - names on the back of Brewer jerseys that play those positions need to change. Villar is probably in the same category as Sogard/Perez - replaceable players for teams that want to win. I think you stick Villar in the everyday lineup at 2B for the next month unless he gets injured or needs a day, and if there isn't marked improvement at the plate it's time to move on from him completely and thank your lucky stars he turned that contract down a few offseasons ago. He gets a bit of a longer leash due to his 2016, but that occurred when he was given the starting SS job and had no real competition of ABs - he essentially had that role to start 2017 as a 2B, but couldn't hit and it led to Sogard's arrival and Perez getting alot of time there, too. At some point there needs to be some accountability based on performance, in particular with the more veteran pieces who are on this team because their production - while not AS caliber - is at least supposed to be reliable.
  17. I recall archer missed a start or two in September last year due to elbow or forearm fatigue....gotta wonder if his name is the next to show up on the TJ list, or at minimum a dl stint. Even posters who didn't want to trade for him have to see that Archer is performing even worse than what they believed he was thus far. In the offseason I was a big advocate of acquiring the version of archer who despite a high hr rate still provided a ton of innings and could at times dominate lineups with his fastball slider combo - the 2018 version of him thus far is not that guy at all. My biggest concern with him was if that arm issue last september was more than needing a few days off - appears to be the case.
  18. They almost have to trade back up...too many picks to expect all of them to be made on players that could make the roster
  19. Packers probably have something lined up with another team in front of them to move back up...too many picks not to use as draft capital to miss out on an impact player at a position of need for them
  20. Chacin is basically 2 pitch pitcher who doesn't go deep into games - i would rather have his hook be too quick than let him get teed off on before you've got a reliever ready to get you out of an inning with a favorable matchup. It's obvious there is a team-wide approach to pull starters early this season. Part of that has to be the comfort level they have across the bullpen, plus arms waiting for their chance down in AAA.
  21. Scary inning here...top of the order and there have been some loud outs
  22. He's not missing many bats, but hopefully chacin keeps them in the park and blows through a few more innings...pitch count is closer to his normal 1 inning total instead of 4!
  23. Royals must all have early dinner reservations or a late starting NBA playoff game they want to watch live...my goodness
  24. We better be prepared because just in the last week alone, we might be using our season's quota. Things usually even themselves out. To be fair, we have lost our closer, starting 1B, C, two of the 3 best OFs, and SS for a few games or DL stints after the first 25 or so games....and we lost a few games late due to comically bad luck with IF hits and bad defense of our own.
  25. I don't know the answer as to why they continue to start Suter but my point was, the Brewers decision on who the starting pitchers are against the Cubs almost certainly wasn't going to be changed by a member of the offense getting hurt. Understandable, and the unfortunate DL stint for Thames winds up making it much easier to get the pen rounded out to the number it needs to be for awhile - I guess my main point was why waste a game against the Cubs with Suter starting if you have a better option on the roster and could shift Suter into the longman role starting as early as tonight, too? Guess it's just my opinion, but I feel like Woodruff is a better starting pitching option than Suter and shouldn't be in an uneven role between the pen and starting to give Suter more starts.
