  1. so how many more Brewers have to get hit by Cubs' pitching before Yost summons McClung to throw at Ramirez's ribs?
  2. Kapler looks like he's just flailing at the ball... c'mon Prince, don't waste that leadoff double
  3. Weeks with a weak popout to 2nd on a 1-0 pitch...not a good ab there
  4. 86...he's been hurt when he's had to throw it for a strike. when he's worked ahead in the count, his slider/cutter has been very effective...only about 3mph difference, but with alot of late movement down and away.
  5. And DeRosa with a double off a hittable pitch... that double play is large right now
  6. nibble, nibble, nibble, nibble...come on
  7. Let's try working ahead in the count now, Soup...that was batting practice for DLee
  8. Aram having a stellar game at the hot corner, almost threw away another run
  9. atta boy Braunie! My mlb hitting streak now stands at 4 games...I can smell that million now!
  10. I hope Soriano breaks his ankle after one of those stupid hops he does when catching a flyball
  11. can someone tell Suppan that he needs to throw strikes?
  12. Hopefully Fukudome doesn't hit a leadoff grand slam to start this next inning...he is after all, the second coming!
  13. How about they follow Weeks' gameplan of swinging at the first tater that comes in? both Hall and Hart watched two very hittable pitches grooved for strike 1
  14. Mr. Lilly, meet Rickie Weeks, the version with a healthy wrist!
  15. If you're looking for good bloody marys in Wrigleyville, hit up Newport Bar and Grille (near the intersection of newport and soutport avenues)...it's a bit off the beaten wrigleyville path so you actually have a place to sit, and the food there's really good, too if you want to grab something before the game starts. You won't be paying 5 bucks for a can of old style there like you would at Murphy's, either.
  16. When Ramirez first came to the Cubs (2nd half of 2003) the Cubs first basemen were Erik Karros, Randall Simon (of sausage race infamy), and Hee Seop Choi. They didn't save any of Ramirez errant throws. Lee was on Florida then. The following year Lee came aboard and Ramirez also improved at picking up the ball and throwing it with help from no-legged Ron Santo. Dunston - his first baseman was Mark Grace - He couldn't get to as many high throws as Lee can but was great at picking them out of the dirt. I knew Aram was brutal his first season in Chicago, and showed steady improvement defensively starting with his first full year with the club...that also happened to be the first year DLee was a Cub - the 3-4 errant throws/week that I was talking about were in 04, when Lee was with the Cubs.
  17. In a scenario like you mentioned, no error would be charged, because Escobar made a non-routine play just to field the ball and try to make a throw over to first - that situation Fielder doesn't get charged for an error, but a better-fielding 1B helps his pitcher and SS by getting an out off a ball put in play that normally would be a hit. I'm talking about the bad throws made after a routine fielding play - if JJ gets a routine 2-hopper hit his way and pulls Prince off the bag with a throw, or handcuffs him with a throw in the dirt, it's an error on Hardy every time. I guess I over generalized when putting together my first response - I wasn't thinking of the near-Web Gem plays that are great just to make a play at first interesting.
  18. If anyone should buy Bartman a beer/give him a million bucks, it's probably Alex Gonzalez, the Cubs SS in 2003. After that foul ball play, a walk and a single to make the game 3-1, slow-footed Miguel Cabrera hit a potential double play ball right at Gonzalez - it was the Sunday hop of all Sunday hops...and he completely booted it. They turn that double play and they're out of the inning with giving up just one run, and probably win the game and series. It shocks me to this day that his name isn't brought up much at all.
  19. Milwaukee isn't exactly world-renowned as a rooster-fighting haven...Pedro probably would get bored
  20. Edit: I forgot that TGJ did drive in the winning run, which was great. But heading into the 10th, he was not that big of a factor in the game offensively. Take out Gwynn's performance, and heading into the 9th pretty much nobody on the Brewers was a factor in the game offensively, aside from Hall getting picked off 2nd after his double. In addition to him driving in the winning run, Gwynn's sac bunt in the 9th to get Weeks over to 2nd set up Fielder's walk, which set up Braun's single and the rest of that inning, too. Anything to get a guy into scoring position late during a scoreless game is a positive. Gross doesn't make the play Gwynn made on Derosa's liner to deep center to end an inning earlier in the game that would have scored a run, either. I hope we all get that Gwynn isn't going to hit 20 HR and have an OBP of 0.385 - it seems like the Gwynn haters on the board jump all over any post complementing Gwynn with plenty of information indicating that. Other than Gwynn hitting 2nd in the order, I'm perfectly fine with having him on the roster to fill the role he's likely to have as a reserve outfielder once Cameron's back...the Brewers could be paying much more for a player to give you similar production.
  21. According to the baseball guru Dayn Perry, Gagne's already done for the season...I happen to love the fact that Perry mentions that jumping to any kind of conclusions after ONE game is stupid in the first paragraph of his story, and then proceeds to jump to conclusions immediately after that. I wonder sometimes if most of these baseball writers have their jobs because they have pictures of their bosses doing something embarrassing. If that's his opinion, put me down for Gagne getting at least 35 saves this season. I'll chalk it up to weather, footing, etc...i think the reason he was grooving fastballs was because he wasn't throwing it for a strike until Fukudome took him yard - with a three run lead, the worst thing he could have done was walk another guy and have the potential winning run at the plate. I'm more miffed at Gagne for his poor coverage of 1st on Pie's grounder than his pitching performance... Coco was supposed to be a washed up, retread closer when the Brewers traded for him, too - that turned out pretty well if you ask me.
  22. It's not only the type of pitches, but the location that the catcher calls during the course of a baseball game. I think there is a skill in calling a good game - that skill can be completely undermined by a pitcher missing his spot on important pitches, though.
  23. any throw in the dirt that isn't scooped out by a first baseman ends up being an error charged to whoever threw it to first. official scorers consider scooping the ball to be a non-routine play. about the only time a 1B is charged with an error on those plays is if he can't handle a low throw that gets to him on the fly...Fielder's good for about 5 of those per season. very good defensive first baseman can save their infielders from alot of throwing errors - Lee has always been considered a gold glove caliber 1B. Ramirez has turned himself into an above-average defensive 3B, but when he first came to the Cubs, he was a very inaccurate thrower - Lee bailed him out about 3-4 times per week.
