  1. Being back to work today....definitely bugging me. Amen to that, splitter. After a couple of decades of student life and then two years working in the UW System, I let myself get used to thinking of the week between Christmas and New Year's as a time to relax. Now I'm in a different branch of state government and I haven't had that "holiday week" off since 1991. The students who work for me are generally gone this week (those who live in the dorms have no choice, as UW-Madison closes them for the midyear break), and my "grownup" office mate is home because his daughter is off school. Other departments here either have enough staff to take turns from year to year, or they don't work with the public and therefore simply all take the same week off. Still...I'm thankful I don't work in retail. That is a branch of public service for which I would be ill suited.
  2. It bugs me that I just missed making the 10,000th view of this thread. (I was 10,001.)
  3. My library owns a copy of the book: Prophet of the sandlots : journeys with a major league scout (Mark Winegardner is the author) If you don't find a copy to purchase anywhere, or are interested in reading but not purchasing, you can borrow our copy. If this interests you, send a message to my inbox and I will tell you more.
  4. Al has a point. I think the top of the first showed us about enough of Matt Kinney. As I recall, the attendance for both this game and the night before (with the Hall walkoff) was under 10,000. And the weather for this comeback game must have been pretty decent - there were people in short sleeves and even sleeveless shirts.
  5. I was just thinking, "Matt Kinney - yep, he'll bring in a TV audience on December 21." Patience, grasshopper.
  6. Food status remains to be seen. (Jamie, did you ask about that?) And the Pooley's website cites a non-smoking section, so it's not all smoke free. I believe it's officially in the town of Burke (if not that, some other neighboring municipality that is not subject to the city ordinance).
  7. The length of commercial breaks on sports talk radio. Agreed. Every drive home after a night game last season, we'd put on WSSP's post-game show only to listen helplessly as perhaps 40% of our available listening time (before we lost the signal at the exit 282 sign) was taken up by commercials or those ten-minute scoreboard updates.
  8. I suppose Tom and I can get there. Two more. Edit: Jimbo, I bet no one will kick you out if you start a bit sooner. You could even help set up...whatever we might have to set up.
  9. I had no idea the Hilldale location couldn't serve beer yet. (No beer at a brew pub? Why are they open?) I came to Janesville last year on what had to be the coldest weekend of that winter Splitter, in most Wisconsin cities represented in the National Weather Service hourly roundup, the coldest weather of the year was recorded on (you guessed it) February 18: Link to NWS temperature map Look on the bright side. At least we didn't meet in Necedah [where the temp hit -33 on Feb. 18] .
  10. Dot instead of Lisa Simpson But look at Dot's facial expression! She looks like she still can't quite believe the Brewers traded her favorite player. You'll know I'm closer to acceptance when I switch back to Lisa.
  11. Right this minute, the realization that Dirty Dancing is going to be a twenty-year-old flick next year. (Notice I didn't say classic.)
  12. listening to daron you can tell he wasn't coming back I noticed that. I turned on the TV around 7:30 and one of the first things I heard him say was something like "I'll be seeing him in Arizona." OK, Daron, I guess you will. It was very nice to see a 'real' game at this time of year, even if it had to include STL success. I'm ready for Thursday night, featuring the Miracle of the Pink Bat.
  13. Hawing, why the hate? Well, my "no" filled post was kind of a knee jerk reaction. But it seems to be part of my personal m.o. as a Brewers fan to turn on a closer once he's failed me too many times (especially if I'm attending the game where he fails, as opposed to listening on the radio or reading a recap after). I've referred to the hawing closer rage elsewhere in this forum over time, and fairly or otherwise, Mike DeJean is a target of my closer rage - joining such others as Dan Kolb, Luis Vizcaino, Bob Wickman, Doug Henry, and more. What's weird is that I haven't turned on Turnbow. His 2006 season should have had me hating on him at least as vigorously as the fellas named above. This is an odd quirk of my personal fandom that I can't explain.
  14. No No No No No. By which I mean, count me in the No No No No No camp. Sharpie gone, 'Rillo gone, DeJean possibly invited? If the Brewers want to test my faith, they don't have to go this far.
  15. We kept the cat, Casey. Otherwise I would have said, "we gave her away." Thinking of old-school Christmas novelty songs...way back when, we had the LP of the Chipmunks, featuring their Christmas song ("weeeeee can haaaaardly stand the wait..."). Being kids, we of course loved that song and played the LP over and over. Eventually it was broken. I would not be surprised if my mom broke it on purpose. Now, the local x-mas nanoplaylist does not seem to include the Chipmunks. Explain. That doesn't really bug me, more like surprises me.
  16. -Christmas music (sorry hawing). Ehh, whatever. If I didn't have my own CDs to listen to, WOLX's puny selection would have turned me off the genre by now. As for the barking dogs doing Christmas carols...no thanks, even I have a limit. We had the CD of meowing-cats-doing-Christmas-carols, but it freaked out our first cat. She'd run around trying to figure out where the other cats were. So we gave it away. Edit to address msc's question: What about McCartney's bowl of tripe? "simply ha-a-a-ving a wonderful Christmas time". Strangely, the Madison x-mas station is not playing that incessantly.
  17. The extremely short playlist on Madison's "all Christmas" radio station. Seriously. When we turn it on, the S.O. and I have a little contest to guess which overplayed song will air first: Jingle Bell Rock (Bobby Helms) Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree (Brenda Lee) Step Into Christmas (Elton John) The tear-jerking "red shoes" song, whose artist we don't know Blue Christmas by Elvis or any one of the following Beach Boys songs: Little St. Nick The Man With All the Toys Merry Christmas, Baby Something from this list will play within ten minutes of our turning on the radio. I am a big fan of Christmas/holiday/seasonal music. And maybe that's why this micro-playlist bugs me - because I know how much else is out there. We've heard a bit of Milwaukee's Christmas station and have not noticed quite the same amount of repetition (or at least, if they're repeating, it's different songs).
  18. I'd frankly be a fan of the Hilldale Great Dane, only partly because it's pretty close to our house. A nice neighborhood spot like the Blue Moon appeals to me too, but the amoung of parking available in that neighborhood makes me a bit reluctant - on behalf of the fans who'd be joining us from out of town. The most likely dates (Feb 10 or 17) are also UW hockey nights, further complicating the parking situation downtown. Hilldale certainly doesn't lack for parking, since they can't stop building those parking ramps. And condos. Condo next to a mall, anyone?
  19. Pooley's is a strong candidate for our shindig. Easy to find, big (or so I'm told - I haven't been) and sports minded.
  20. Appreciate the blue font, Jimbo. I believe that's a breakfast event. Plus several out of towners have already hoped out loud for a location close to the interstate - yet another strike against Bennett's.
  21. "Donder." This is NOT a reindeer name. It's Donner. Donner!
  22. we are open to suggestions for the bar and the February Saturday for this event to be held. For those of you without a 2007 calendar at hand, that narrows down the dates to February 3, 10, 17 and 24. Of those four, the 10th and 17th might be most promising - as the 3rd is on the eve of Super Bowl Sunday, and the 24th coincides with WIAA state wrestling, which will pack the city with visitors already. And speaking as (very possibly) bf.net's first-ever "Ms. 3000", I believe a fine time will be had by all who can join us. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. Cardinals meeting with Bonds today. That would certainly give me fodder for the "irrational player hatin'" thread, as well as the yet-to-be-started "franchise hatin'" thread.
  24. The trading of Davis bugs me still, in general. And I don't know what to do for an avatar now. Do I look like a loser if I return to the Sharpie head? Nothing else feels right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  25. Earlier this year, when I turned 40, one of my college student employees told me not to worry, that 40 is the new 20. The funny thing is, she had just turned 20. I thought about asking what 20 is (the new infancy?). That didn't bug me so much as entertain me, though. Today we had a group of 50 high school students in our library. These groups tend to bring multiple adults but not really enough to keep everyone under control. What bugs me is there's always someone in every HS group who goes into our stacks and turns off the lights. Doesn't matter what school. It's like a teenage instinct, to wreak havoc by turning off lights (not any other kind of havoc).
