  1. I look at those offensive projections and it looks like "This is the worse-case scenario for each offensive player". That doesn't look like a median or whatever, that honestly looks like a worst case projection for just about every player on the Brewers. I generally find these projection systems to be highly informative and useful tools (but just that tools.......not a religious text that has to be strictly adhered to), but this one just seems to be shooting super low for some reason. I'm not at all saying some Brewers players won't/can't underperform or didn't overperform last year (Villar, for example), and whatnot, it just seemed like all of these seemed like lower end expectations.
  2. His major league numbers comprise about 30 total innings, and it's from 2010 and 2011, so that really doesn't tell us much, if anything. His minor numbers aren't great, but he's been "ok" the last three years, which is what's really the most relevant (and largest) sample. Do I think he's going to be great? No.... but looking at the most recent relevant sample he's trending better than just a quick glance at his overall numbers show. He might surprise and be a 2017 contributor. I doubt it, honestly, but he's at least worth a glance.
  3. Ugh. Sogard is the very definition of "just a guy" and he's 30 years old. Can't hit for power, doesn't get on base... there's not much to like here.
  4. It's not up to any one person or group of individuals to decide what's offensive to another person or group of people. Regardless if someone wants to say someone is being "overly PC" or whatever..... making someone else dress like a woman or wear a tutu, or ostracizing them from a group because they refuse to wear a dress, and then saying "it's not a big deal"...... it's not for anyone to decide if it's offensive for that person to dress like a woman. That's up to that guy alone. That's how you end up with guys like Richie Incognito. I guess the bottom line for me is this. Is my enjoyment of MLB going to go down because some guy didn't have to wear a dress or a cartoon character outfit on a plane ride for a road trip? Nope. Then I'm not bothered by this. If teams (like the Brewers have done in the past) want to get together and do a thing like "hey, let's all dress like Cowboys!". Great! Have fun. Do stuff like that. Hazing is stupid. There doesn't need to be any place for that in a locker room, in the pros, in college, in high school...... in any level of sports. If you can't "trust" your teammates without mentally and/or physically abusing them, there's something psychologically wrong with you on a very basic level.
  5. Man is the Eastern conference mediocre. Despite a 3 game losing streak and being below .500, the Bucks are 2 games behind the 3rd place team in the East.
  6. Queue up the "if you've never played organized sports, you don't understand" comments.
  7. Anyways.........regarding Dexter Fowler, the guy the thread is about..... He's been pretty generally about a 2 to 2.5 WAR player most of his career. Last year seemed to be a pretty big outlier for him. The question is, do you expect him to be a 4 WAR player going forward after age 30 when he hasn't been that up to this point? I really don't. I'm pretty ok with the Cards spending this kind of money for a guy who's generally just a shade above being a league average player moving into his age 31-35 seasons.
  8. Why are we comparing the trade return we can/should get for Tyler Thornburg to what teams got for Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller? Thornburg was pretty darn good last year, but comparing him to Chapman? Chapman hasn't had a FIP over 2 and a half in 6 years. The guy strikes out close to 2 batters per inning for his career. He's the very definition of unhittable (minus his terrible mis-use by Joe Maddon in the post-season). I think Thorny is great, and I wish him the best and all, but he doesn't even belong in the same conversation as Chapman.
  9. Who could have ever imagined signing a lower-mid tier FA for three years would have such far reaching financial implications.......
  10. Giannis rekt the Cavaliers last night. His shot chart was hilarious. I think he took like 4 shots that weren't dunks or layups.
  11. I don't think that's really how it works. I don't think they're putting that in a piggy bank and saying "ok, well we didn't spend it this year, so we'll be able to spend MORE money next year. If they didn't spend it, they didn't spend it. Whatever they don't spend in 2016 is just profit.
  12. Then they come out last night and dominate Syracuse. Ethan Happ had a monster game and Hayes missed a triple double by one point. Very jeckyl/hyde performance from this team so far this young season.
  13. I think what really matters here is you know EXACTLY what Carter is, and what he can give you, and frankly, it's not much. 40 homers and 220 strikeouts, bad defense, and a 1.0 WAR. When you're rebuilding..... when the wins don't matter, take a chance on a guy like Thames. I don't think he's going to light the world on fire. I don't think he's an .850 OPS guy or whatever, but If he catches lightning in a bottle, great! He can either play and contribute, or be a trade piece sometime soon. Carter wasn't going to do either of those things, and we already knew that. That's why this happened.
  14. Giannis put on a SHOW last night. I think it's possible this team can hover around .500 for the bulk of the year. Chasing that 8th seed again!! YEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHH!!!!! EDIT: And yes, this is not at all a "good" team, but there's things to watch. Parker is turning into a legit scorer. Brogdon can do a little bit of everything and is worth seeing if he can develop. Vaughn, likewise, is developing as a scoring option.
  15. Yeah..... it really calls the process into question when the two guys that left him off are from the same city. It's not so much an argument that Porcello didn't deserve to win, but leaving Verlander off the ballot entirely? That's just kind of indefensible, honestly.
  16. Badgers have been good for a long while, but I don't recall them ever being this deep. They're not as ultra talented at the top as some of the blue chip schools, but as far as just plain quality depth, the Badgers have a lot of it. A Final Four run is definitely doable again.
  17. Interestingly, I went and watched the 1988 Kirk Gibson/Dennis Eckersly at bat this morning. That was an 8 pitch at bat, and from the time he got into the batter's box, until the time he put the ball in play, it was just a shade over 6 minutes. There were a handful of throws over to first (four I think, I'd have to go back and recount)
  18. Kinda like Cavalier fans.....
  19. I don't think we need a specific rule, but at the same time, I don't think there's anything wrong with (at some point) an umpire simply saying "hey, let's play some baseball here". 8 minutes for a 6 pitch at bat is way beyond absurd. I know it's the world series, I know every pitch is important. I know what's at stake. But 8 minutes for a 6 pitch at bat is ludicrous. I have no problem with an umpire just stepping out and saying 'hey. Let's do this!" and not granting time or a mound trip.
  20. I mean......I agree, but this changes nothing. Nobody *cares* really. I mean they care, but this won't change how more than potentially a handful of people change their substance use habits. It didn't happen to their family, so it literally does not matter in the greater scheme of things. For most people, there's a disconnect. You have to see this hit home before it makes any sense.
  21. You left out that Carter doesn't have ultra-terrible dreadlocks, and a super-punchable face. (not typed in blue)
  22. Jaso got $8 million over 2 years and has a career .360 OBP. Hell, we could probably trade for Jaso so the Pirates can play Bell and save $4 million and not lose any value on the field. Jaso is super-terribad vs. Lefties, doesn't hit for power, has equally as bad defense as Carter, and worst of all, those dreadlocks.
  23. Give up the NL HR leader for nothing!? Payroll isn't a critical issue, and even if it were, 8M for a 40+ hr guy is a tradable contract. Non-tendering Nieuwenhuis makes sense. He's not that good, and not trade bait. But just looking at the homeruns in a vacuum is a poor way of looking at things. Billy Hamilton was 2nd in the NL in steals, and the NL stolen base leader a year ago, and is probably worth a shade over league minimum. Chris Carter is just a shade above a replacement player because of his terrible batting average, and his extremely bad defense. That being said the issue is "do the Brewers have a readily available replacement?" No, they don't, so he'll probably get tendered anyways. But for all that, all of Carter's homeruns don't even offeset his positional adjustment, bad defense, and mediocre OBP.
  24. Here's a point to be made. They have a super low payroll. They have no "developmental" first baseman...... unless they have some undisclosed plan to move someone like Santana there (which I don't believe is going to happen yet) Carter isn't great, but he's certainly not bad, and he provides something the rest of the lineup generally lacks, and that's big time power. Given Carter's age and history it's not at all unreasonable to expect that he should be right around an .800-ish OPS again with 35-40 more homers.
  25. Villar's OPS was skewed toward's OBP. He also gets a positional adjustment. .820 OPS SS and 2B are a bit harder to come by than .820 OPS 1st baseman. Carter is also a pretty poor defender, so he has negative value as a defender.
