  1. Why does someone have to have "Paid dues" to be a good GM? If they are capable of doing the job, hire them. If they are the most qualified candidate, then hire them to do the job. This meathead mindset that someone MUST be a former player to be in the game is why we still have dinosaurs like Kirk Gibson, Dave Stewart, Tony LaRussa, and Mike Matheny doing the things they do.
  2. I think Coghlan was doing his job to break up the DP. He was within reach of the bag there. Kang could have done more to move/jump get out of the way of the runner ..... definitely not placing blame on him, just saying that a lot of guys will jump or try to step over the sliding runner. That being said, I do expect Coghlan to take one in the numbers next time they play. That's just the way it goes.
  3. Did anyone catch this from the Mariners/Angels game last night? Seager took the first pitch, stepped out of the box, stepped back in the box, called time again, and Weaver started to show some irritation. Seager than made a big display of calling time again while he made a display of digging in and settling into the box, and then Weaver drilled him right in the back. http://deadspin.com/kyle-seager-trolled-jered-weaver-into-getting-ejected-1731318062 Once you're in the box, be ready to hit. I don't ever call for intentional HBP, but Seager was being a punk.
  4. There is a (IMO) strange belief that our logjam of outfielders will diminish the return we'll get on Lind because other GM's will see it as "the Brewers HAVE TO TRADE LIND!!!" The return the Brewers will get on Lind will be commensurate with Lind's value as a player and his contract, and nothing more. Other teams won't care whether the Brewers "have to trade" Lind or not.
  5. If Braun is indeed 6'2" as his listed height suggests, there's no way Fielder is only 5'7". Even 5'9" is dubious http://img.bleacherreport.net/img/images/photos/001/543/751/129028653_crop_north.jpg?w=630&h=420&q=75 Of course, it's entirely possible that Braun's height is being padded as well. It's hard to say exactly how much taller Braun is, because they are wearing helmets, but there is not a 5 or 7 inch difference there, or in any picture you can find with the two of them standing next to each other. (Unless in this cropped picture Prince is standing on a box)
  6. Is this just the Brewers doing Ashley a favor for being a longtime grinder, or is there even a sliver of a chance he could displace Maldonado next year?
  7. That would be great but do you trade him or keep him? Will he still be that player or even a high .800 OPS player in two or three years when this team is ready to compete again? I don't see a hitter of Braun's caliber anywhere in the system Clancy is putting him at 3B, to negate half of his offensive value.
  8. He's had a couple of basehits to LF, but it appears all of his homeruns have been to center or RF. He doesn't have a pretty swing, but he has so much raw power that if he barrels up on a ball, he can drive it out regardless.
  9. In 63 PA's as a Brewer now, Santana has only struck out 13 times. I know it's a pretty small (really small) sample size, but that's a really reasonable K rate. I expect him to strike out a lot (and it doesn't bother me one bit), but so far I'm super impressed with this guy. Also, this, in regards to him playing CF every day next year: If #Brewers still have OFs Khris Davis, Ryan Braun and Domingo Santana in '16, asst GM Gord Ash said Santana might be given shot to stay CF.
  10. None of us knows how much Matt has left in the tank, but I'm open to finding out after the offseason. While his reaction yesterday (maybe a knee jerk reaction, though maybe not if they were talking about this earlier in the week) holds some cause for concern, I'd frankly be more concerned if he weren't upset about his season in the rotation coming to an early end. Deal him for one of the competitive balance picks. Deal K-Rod for another. I suspect teams aren't exactly going to be lining up to trade those types of value picks for one of the worst starters in the majors.
  11. These guys go out every day and play to win. They want to win games because they're pros. Each encounter in a baseball game is a 1 vs 1 test of ability and each guy wants to do his best to win that 1 vs 1 battle. Asking them to go out and just lay down is something they won't do.
  12. I like that we started the rebuild and seem (somewhat) committed to it, but I can't see them competing next year. As others have said, we have too many holes in the infield. The rotation is really only 2 or 3 deep, and CF is still kind of a question mark. Now that we have started this process, I don't want to see them go out and spend a bunch of top tier money on mid-tier FA's again to try to win 83 games. We'll end up right back where we were this season. Let the process play out as it's begun.
  13. I know he strikes out a lot (ok...... a LOT), and he's only hitting like .215, but I'm intrigued by this kid. He can take an ugly hack and still hit the ball 375 feet and make it look effortless. I think this guy has serious 40 HR potential. He takes his walks. If he hits .250, he could be a serious offensive force.
  14. Well many posters here think steroids = despicable piece of human garbage, so that shouldn't be a surprise. Hating the Gagne deal had nothing to do with his steroid issue. It had to do with paying a closer 10 million dollars and the fact that he had missed almost the entirety of 2005 and 06, and was pretty much average in 2007. That's not the kind of guy you throw 10 mil at.
  15. I thought that if he could stay relatively healthy, Braun could put up an .850 OPS. He's at .852, so he's spot on. I never really expected him to go back to being a .900-950 OPS guy (I hoped he would, but I was trying to be realistic in my brain). Age and injuries simply are going to keep him from being the player he was at 28. If he can play at this level for a few years, I'd be pretty happy to have the guy as part of the team. Staying healthy is the key for him. This is where I am. I expected an .825-.850 OPS from him coming into the year, and on top of that he's on pace to play about 150 games. I think we're getting "best case scenario" for health and production. He's 31, and considering he's not a big guy, and fairly athletic, it's not unrealistic to expect to get decent production from him for at least then next 3-4 years. He's sitting at 3.2 WAR right now, and should be around 4-ish at the end of the year (if his batting line stays relatively static). While that's certainly not "MVP" Braun, a 4 WAR guy is a valuable piece.
  16. Herrera has a .2 WAR. He's the very definition of a slightly-better- than replacement level bench player. I have no problem with the role Herrera plays on the team.
  17. Herrera has 260 fewer plate appearances, and has 5 more walks than Segura. Also, in those same 260 fewer plate appearances, he has the same number of XBH's as Segura. Not to get off track, but I actually like Herrera as a utility guy. Segura....... not so much.
  18. Well if that's the case, let's hope we don't use him as a throw-in for another Kevin Mench a few years from now.
  19. 10 teams will make the playoffs. On the last weekend of August in 2015, 4 teams in the bottom half of the league in payroll (Royals, Mets, Pirates, and Astros) have all but locked up playoff spots. Two other teams, the Twins and Rays, have climbed into playoff contention. (I don't honestly give the Rays much of a shot, to be honest though) The Cubs are competing with a young team (13th in payroll), the Cardinals are not in the top 10 in payroll, and the Red Sox, Tigers, and Phillies are a disaster. I'm not saying payroll doesn't matter. It does. But it's nice to see that it's not the only thing that matters.
  20. Here's what I can glean from that data. Carlos Gomez is definitely an aggressive base runner. We already know he is fast, so he is a fast base runner. The contention is ..... Carlos Gomez a good base runner. The argument is , his UBR says he is a positive, so he MUST be a *good* baserunner. My contention being aggressive and fast doesn't necessarily make him good at running the bases. At judging situations and knowing "it's 2 outs, I shouldn't be stealing third, or making the last out at third, or going to third on a ball hit to SS" or whatever. Those qualifiers on Fangraphs don't make any distinction between getting thrown out at third by 30 feet on a grounder to ss, or getting beat on a bang-bang play. That just slides into the data set as a quantified number, and away we go to the next Gomez base running blunder. So here's my takeaway from it all? Is Gomez fast, aggressive, and does he add positive value with those attributes? Absolutely Yes. But is he a "good" baserunner? No. When he loses his speed (which I think he is already losing a 1/4 to a half a step), he's going to find that his "fast and aggressive" approach will not make up for the mental mistakes he often makes on the bases.
  21. Except comparing pro sports to an office job is like comparing apples to coconuts. Pro sports is entertainment. I don't have walk up music when I go to my desk. There are not video boards around my office to keep onlookers distracted between calls. We don't have mascots race around the office 2/3rds of the way through the day. We also don't do this at the end of a good day.
  22. Personally, I wish we had more of this It may not be 'racial', but it definitely is cultural.
