  1. Hunter Pence and all his twitches and blinks and crap BUG me. good lord. That aside, back on topic. I mentioned this in another thread, but baseball needs to get over itself. LIke someone else said, the "old white guy" mentality needs to go, and players need to get over the fact that it's not 1920 anymore.
  2. 'If you misunderstand the way I play the game, it's your fault' That is pretty awesome and also correct. The Yankees should be more concerned about their lazy defense on the play that allowed Gomez to get a hustle double. It's interesting to me that baseball in general still hasn't come to grips with the fact that the Cuban/Latin/Dominican players play the game with a lot of heart and passion and flair. They aren't "disrespecting" the game, that's just how they learned how to play. I love watching guys like Puig, Gomez, etc, etc. It's not the wrong way to play, it's just a different way to play. Someday the starched collar ways of the hierarchy will accept that, and we'll move on. Some day.
  3. Awesome article about Gomez and how he plays the game http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2015-08-25/carlos-gomez-astros-yankees-bench-clearing-unwritten-rules-passion-intensity-joe-girardi
  4. I was surprised that McCann wasn't the catcher during that exchange.
  5. Yeah but Ruth was hitting them off guys throwing in the low-80s who worked as plumbers in the offseason. (The great pitchers of that era might be able to hold their own in the modern MLB, don't get me wrong, but the quality of the league as a whole was not comparable.) Some of the parks Ruth played in were absolutely huge. Granted, a few of them were also band boxes, but some of those parks in that day were just massive.
  6. Who? I'd like to know who wants to acquire prospects as an end-game, and not actually "win games". And yes, right now, I'd absolutely like to trade everything. Braun, Lucroy, and Segura. This team was ripe for a complete blow-up. If a Tulowitzki-like deal comes along for Braun, I absolutely hope they take it, and continue to stock up with talent. If someone overvalues Segura based on what he did 2 years ago, absolutely acquire talent for him, especially pitching. If someone needs catching, absolutely trade Lucroy. He's about to be 30, and in the decline phase for a catcher. None of that is the end goal. It's all means to the ultimate end.
  7. And again, I'll point out that the strawman arguments that have been thrown out around here (even in a sarcastic manner) is that the people in favor of rebuilds "don't want to win" and only want to get prospects to trade for more prospects and never want to pay anyone. These things are all false. The truth of this strategy is that you have to selectively pick and choose which players you will extend (say, a McCutcheon, or a Longoria, or a Tulowitzki, or Braun)...but saying you will NEVER EXTEND ANYONE! is false. Saying that you trade prospects for more prospects is also false. While it may be a means to achieve an end, it's not the end goal. Saying that acquiring prospects instead of winning is the end goal is also false. Winning is the end goal. Tampa won 90 games or more in 5 years out of 6, and won an AL pennant. Obviously they had some lean years before that streak and had some high draft picks in order to do that. But they traded well, and didn't give out many ridiculous contracts, or big contracts to old, high priced FA's. Obviously the end goal is to win the WS, and they were right on the doorstep of doing that. The goal is NOT TO ACQUIRE PROSPECTS in this strategy, but in fact, to win enough games to make the playoffs, and win a world series. I don't know how much more clearly those of us who espouse this strategy can be. It is not the only strategy. It's not necessarily the best strategy. But for a small market team, it's certainly a workable strategy if you have patience and an ability to draft well.
  8. Yes. And I'm pretty sure there is some evidence of Babe Ruth using what were the PED's of his time. "Hot dogs" are not PEDS. :D
  9. Ok, there is a difference in these things. There is some ambiguity in whether or not OJ Simpson killed Nicole Brown (actually.......not really). There's ambiguity on almost everyone's score card in golf, except the pros. What is not ambiguous is how many home runs Barry Bonds hit in major league baseball games. If you want to say "Home Run King" vs "All Time Home Run Leader".....well that's just semantics in my opinion, but so be it, I suppose.
  10. The fallacy in that argument is that the people who want to recycle talent are seen as not wanting to win. That is false. The argument is that you want to recycle the talent before it gets old and expensive.
  11. I don't think anyone could really refer to like Jim Gantner or Billy Spiers as a home run king.
  12. Sure I can. Why not? That's what I believe and that is what I will believe until the day I die. Why not? Because they happened http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable.jsp#elem=%5Bobject+Object%5D&tab_level=child&click_text=Sortable+Player+hitting&sectionType=sp&statType=hitting&page=1&ts=1440430676887&split=&season=2015&game_type='R'&playerType=ALL&timeframe=&season_type=ALL&active_sw=&sortColumn=hr&sortOrder='desc'&extended=0&league_code='MLB' I didn't say you had to like it, but they most certainly do count. I can say "I believe the bases to be 100 feet apart, but they most certainly aren't, just because I want them to be, anymore than Barry Bonds 762 home runs didn't happen.
  13. I really wish we'd stop playing "shuffle the deck chairs" with bad defenders. We have had bad defense for like.....forever, and just sticking guys wherever doesn't work. Braun was a historically bad infielder and just saying "first base isn't that hard" is a misnomer. Braun was (again) historically bad at 3rd base. Putting him in the infield could potentially negate a good portion of his positive offensive value, and at this stage of the game, he's not such an elite offensive talent that losing some of that value is worth the net loss.
  14. I'm *kind of* here as well. I mean, I don't want players cheating, but you can't just say "nope, Barry Bonds isn't the home run king" Yes, he is, whether someone likes it or not. The record book says Barry Bonds. It's Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds is probably my least favorite ballplayer of all time, and like it or not, he's the homerun king. He hit those homeruns. They counted. They happened. Pretending they didn't happen or "don't count" does nothing for the game.
  15. Only 4 more this year? He's got 26, and they have like 40 more games. He could (potentially) hit 7-8 more dingers this year. That being said, Even as a DH, I just think he's going to break down too much too warrant getting the playing time he'll need to get another 84 homers. He probably lost 40-50 homers with the almost 2 year suspension. Minus that and injuries from the previous few years, he'd already be there. So there's that to think about.
  16. And sometimes they are wrong.
  17. Davis is coming into his prime years and is going to be cheap for a few more years at least. His walk rate has doubled this year, and there's no reason to not expect him to be an .800-ish OPS guy going forward for the next 3 or so years. I'd be looking to move Braun and putting Santana in right, if at all possible. Shed those dollars!
  18. I think the really big context that is missing here is it's in the middle of a really really crappy season. It's just hard to be excited about things when your team sucks pretty bad. I suspect this might have been a bigger deal for Braun, the club, Bob, the fans, etc, etc if the Brewers had something to play for at this point.
  19. What people are failing to acknowledge when they say that he should just focus more and play is that when he says he was depressed because of this, it very well could have been affecting his ability to PLAY baseball. Depression is not just something you choose to get over. Depression is a debilitating affliction, and it was almost certainly affecting his ability to do his job, much like a torn ligament would affect a pitcher. Just because the disability is insidious and not defined by a torn muscle or broken bone doesn't mean it's any less serious, and doesn't mean the organization shouldn't provide any and all help and support that it can. This has nothing to do with "agreeing with his lifestyle", it's the notion that he can just turn on or off his focus at the drop of a dime. Who knows? Maybe now that this is behind him he'll come out next year and hit .280 with 17-20 bombs. I'm simply stating that just because a condition doesn't have an obvious outward physical or visible sign, it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be cared for and just dismissed.
  20. It's interesting to me that when the guy used the word "depression", that people suggest "well he should just focus more on baseball". Do people actually think that's how depression works? You can just "focus more" on something and choose not to be depressed? Because that's not actually how it works. Not really at all.
  21. Just watched it again and it looks like he might have stepped on 2B. It's tough to tell because the base is in the sun and everything around it is bright white. If it did count, that might be the first 4-8 putout in baseball history. Also, if it did count it's no longer a force at third so I don't know how you would figure that mess out. Is the runner out because he's out of the baseline? Nope. Because once the batter-runner touches 1B and the runner on 3rd touches home, the conditions for the game ending have been met per 5.08(b). He's not out of the baseline because the game is over.
  22. Segura has to go. In 14 he was a .4 WAR player, this year getting into the 2nd week of August, he's a .1 WAR guy. He's (even counting his defense) barely above replacement level. He's been bad for 2+ years now, there's no reason to keep throwing him out there unless the only purpose is to keep from starting someone else's clock.
  23. Hitting the (eventual) game winner off of Broxton feels so good. So right. At least he's still earning the money the Brewers are paying him.
  24. I'd like to see Rogers get at least some playing time. I know he's not a prospect, but I want to see if this guy can hit.
  25. Yeah, I'd be a bit more worried about his workload if he was like 22-23 or whatever, but he's 26. It's really now or never for the guy.
