  1. The problem with our bench inflexibility (Weeks and Overbay) is that it forces us to use a guy like Schafer as our 4th OFer, when he's more suited as a 5th OF/defensive replacement/last man off the bench. Ah well......at this point it's very clearly a case of "this is what it is." If Melvin and co don't think it's a problem by now, they obviously won't look to resolve it this season.
  2. Can't stress how big it is to get that run here in the 8th. Gotta hold them now.
  3. Followed up by Schafer banging one off the wall in center......
  4. I really hope anyone trying to trade for tulo is aware that the Tulo they're getting isn't the same guy that the stats represent.
  5. We had no impact pitching come up with our big group of prospects (Fielder, Weeks, Hart, Hardy, Braun, Lucroy) that lead to two playoff appearances, except Gallardo. We had to trade for CC, Greinke, and Marcum, and Wolf. The Cubs can bring up their impact bats and then trade or sign for the pitching they'll need when the time is right.
  6. I absolutely agree that guys playing out of position CAN hurt the team if it happens long term. I was directly replying to the quoted post that said it hurt the team in that specific game, which it didn't. Zero balls were hit to guys plying out of position, and accounted for zero runs lost. Ideal bench (IMO) would be Gindl Schafer Maldy Herrera Morris Gindl put up a .750-ish OPS in a fairly good sample size last year. He could be your main PH'er and backup OFer Schafer is a suck hitter, but he could be the backup CF'er, 5th OF'er, PR'er, late defensive replacement, etc. Maldy is obviously your backup catcher, and maybe your top RH pinch bat Herrera isn't as bad as many think he is (put up a .340 OBP in over 200 PA's in 2012) and honestly should be the backup IF'er Morris could be Reynold's platoon mate, and we could see what the schmo has to offer.
  7. Lol. Makes sense. Lol... Anyways, anybody that questions the Brewers right now is ridiculous. You know, it's totally ok to have an opinion, and it's great to be upbeat, but when you say things like this, you just come off as a troll.
  8. This is going to be the month the Brewers get tested. The Reds are charging hard (and were 2 - 5 vs. them this year) and we have 6 games vs. the Reds this month. Could be the month we either separate, or things get really interesting. 12 - 13, and I think things are going to tighten up in the division.
  9. Gallardo had a 3.23 ERA coming into this game. He's been terrible today, but he, Peralta, and Lohse have all been pretty decent.
  10. For as bad as he's been in June, Braun's got his OPS for the month back up over .700. All his power is to RF right now. Have to believe that rib muscle/side strain is still bothering him though.
  11. Since April 29th (a span of almost 2 months), 4 of the 6 best records in the NL are from teams in the central. http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=2014-04-29 Check out the "standings from this date" and look at the NL Overall. Even the Cubs are a 'not bad' 26 - 29 since that date. The NL Central is playing some REALLY good ball. The way the Giants have been playing, the central might be looking at 2 wild cards again, not 0.
  12. The funny thing is listening to the criticism Votto gets for 'taking too many walks' from the fans (and some posters), and not driving in enough runs. A guy who gets on base at over .400 clip (as he's done for each of the last 6 years is ultra-valuable, and producing runs, regardless of what the RBI stat might tell you. EDIT: I think Hamilton is poorly suited (at this point) to be a leadoff man. 13 walks in 295 PA's is pretty poor. The SB's are great, but he needs to get on base more. Granted, he's 23, so that's a skill he can come into, and if he does he can be a great one.
  13. Braun playing CF and Reynolds playing RF didn't hurt at the time, IIRC. The net runs lost due to that was 0. It could potentially hurt the team if either of those (or other players) had to play out of position long term, but it didn't cost them any runs yesterday.
  14. Thank goodness. I feel more relief than elation after the way this one ended.
  15. Do these guys truly not understand the concept of just putting the ball in play with a man on third and less than two outs? There are guys on this team that just can't seem to even begin to grasp that concept, and it's mind bogglingly frustrating.
  16. This replay stuff is getting silly. I don't even know what they're seeing there.
  17. The funny thing is Eckstein (to be specific) had 3 seasons in the minors where he put up over an .800 OPS, and then never so much as sniffed .800 in the majors, and never slugged .400. Even in a season that Eckstein hit .300, he didn't slug .400. Scooter is going to have a short peak (I suspect), but 10 - 12 homers and 30 or even a 40 doubles isn't out of the question for him if he plays enough to get the requisite PA's.
  18. What I said was, (yes, it was me), was that his OBP was very highly 'batting average' driven because he doesn't take a lot of walks. Which he doesn't. He also doesn't hit for a lot of power. Which he doesn't. And given his slight size, I don't think it's reasonable to EVER expect Scoot to be much more than a 12 - 15 homerun guy at his absolute peak. What that means is, if Scooter has a down year where he hits .250 - ish, due to his lack of walks and SLG, he could really be an offensive limitation. That is not 'hating', that's just pointing out the possible limitations in his offensive skillset. He's been fantastic this year, and if you think I'm rooting AGAINST the guy you're dead wrong. My guess was that in his peak years, Scooter would be a guy that would OPS between .720 and .750. If he doesn't hit .280 or better, (again, because his OBP and SLG are very dependent on batting average), that could drive his slash line down signifcantly. He's not an Adam Dunn type where he can hit .220 and still OPS over .800. That's not hating. That's just statistical analysis. I'm ecstatic that Scooter is exceeding my expectations. Insinuating otherwise is looking past the analysis and trying to assume you think I want him to fail, which is 100% false.
  19. Braun on base 4 times tonight. If he can get on base, swipe some bags, he's slotted in fine at the 2 spot. He just needs to stop swinging at crap. Was nice to see Gomez make some solid contact in that last at bat. He's been in a funk lately. Even his hits have been squibbers and nibbers and whatnot.
