  1. This seems like a move that would be done to acquire a 'name' just to acquire a name. Ramirez is younger, better, and cheaper at this point. Isn't the point to be better at each position? Unless A-roid can somehow get back on his magic pills, I want no part of him. I expect Ramirez to start declining, but not as badly as Rodriguez.
  2. Something between a good and great episode last night. Spoilers ahead....... The Walkers became a threat again. They hadn't been recently, due to the unerring accuracy and ballistic deadliness of the little plinker handguns the crew has been carrying. Like Robert said, both T-Dog and Lori were redeemed a bit. I like the "no more kid stuff" montage for Carl, right before the end. I would think that was a good indicator that he did what he had to do there. Maybe I'm wrong though. I really hope that Singleton is leaving the show because of a schedule conflict. I'd hate to think they killed off the 'token black guy' just to replace him with another one. If that were the case, they should have just kept T-Dogg alive.
  3. Jumping in late to the discussion, but I have a few things here....... Whether they re-use Hammil, Ford, and Fisher, use entirely new character, or if they get bold, and re-cast, Luke, Han and Leia, I'm cool with it. Honestly, even the hardcore SW fan in me (I'm 38, so I'm from that core group from the 80's) would like to see some new actors reimagining of those characters. I have only one caveat. NO CLONE WARS PLEASE. That's been done to DEATH. At this point anything 'not Clone Wars' would honestly be a pleasant surprise, and would have a hard time disappointing me. Secondly, I've seen a lot of 'oh no, Disney!?!?!' comments. I've seen people suggesting that the theme song will be done by the Jonas Brothers, and we'll have Mickey Mouse/Star Wars crossovers, etc, etc, etc. Right. Because they're TOTALLY doing that with the Avengers/Marvel movies, right? Let's be honest.......could Disney honestly do something WORSE with the Star Wars universe than Jar Jar Binks at this point? Could they honestly do something worse than Ep 1, 2, and 3? IMO........no. Let's give them a chance.
  4. If we're going to chase a FA arm, I'd rather go after Sanchez or Jackson.
  5. Put me in the 'no thanks' camp. He's going to be 32, overpaid, overhyped, and full of excuses when he underperforms.
  6. Here played in all but 13 games which was 8th for all of 3B in baseball. He may have not have been perfectly healthy but he played more games that your average MLB starter so I dont think I would say he didnt have a healthy season. What is a healthy season? Playing every game. Over the course of 162 games - I would assume missing 10-15 games is pretty normal which is right where Ramirez was at and he put up the 3rd best offensive numbers for any 3B. So Ramirez wasn't gimping around for a few weeks barely able to run? Sure he still played but he wasn't exactly healthy. Guy put up a .900 OPS (6th best for qualifiers in the NL) and played steady, if not spectacular D. Oh, he set a career high for stolen bases as well! Yes, he did gimp around for a few weeks, I don't think anyone's denying that, but to say he's a big injury question mark after the season he had is maybe a little bit of a stretch, isn't it? He's 34, he's a 3B, and he's not a small guy. I think most people expect Ramirez to need 15-20 games off. (as another poster pointed out, he took 13 games off this year). As long as he avoids the major injuries, and continues to hit, I think the 'injury question mark' fears are maybe a bit overstated.
  7. I realize the Tigers were a division winner, and not a 'play in' team, but with the Tigers holding a 2-0 lead on the Spankees, and the Cards up 1-0 on the Giants, we're facing the very real possibility of the only 2 teams that made it to the post-season with less than 90 wins making it to the world series. regular season /#doesn't matter.
  8. Wow. Enjoy the NBA dude. It's so much fun. No kidding. Really? You're not going to watch the playoffs because you don't like the teams? I too was hoping Baltimore, Oakland, or Washington would advance, but I still love baseball and I'll be watching no matter who is playing. Your loss I guess. You missed a heck of a game on Saturday night! There have been some really fun games to watch this post season. I love baseball too, but watching games between teams that I dislike isn't all that fun for me. I'll watch the boxscores and hope the Yankees and Cardinals lose, but that's about the extent of my interest at this point.
  9. Look at Hart, whom the majority want to trade. The replacement options in-house are Gamel and Morris. Gamel is coming off an injury, and was unimpressive in the small sample before the injury. From April 9th through April 23rd (14 of the 21 games he played in '12), Gamel posted a .805 OPS. He was looking good at the plate & turning in good PAs in my opinion. Small sample size meant that any 0-fers dragged his slash line down mightily. I also would say that those who wanted to see Hart dealt at the '12 trading deadline or pre-2013 were/are the minority here. I agree that Morris isn't ready yet, but he's also not very far away from being ready. 1B is a position of strength in the org. right now imo.. Talk about cherry picking to make the numbers say what you want them to say........ I'm sure I could find a 14 day stretch for just about anyone in a given year that they had an .800 OPS in. I'm not even saying "Don't trade Hart", but I'm not going to be shocked if Gamel can't put up a .750 OPS at this point. In fact, I'll go even further, and disagree that I thought his at bats just didn't impress me all that much.
  10. That's fine, IF you have replacements waiting, and a strong system. Right now, position player-wise, the Brewers system is very lacking in impact players. Look at Hart, whom the majority want to trade. The replacement options in-house are Gamel and Morris. Gamel is coming off an injury, and was unimpressive in the small sample before the injury. Morris is coming off one good season at AA, but wasn't highly touted before that. I'm not sold that Morris would be a positive contributor at the MLB level as a first baseman, offensively. Aside from that, I see a lot of 'trade Ramirez', 'trade Weeks' etc, etc. Who's going to play? Green? Gennett? Farris? Those guys are going to be about 60-65 OPS+ type guys at the MLB level. I'm not advocating not trading guys when the time is right, but for position players, the Brewers don't have ready replacements. At least on the pitching side of things, the immediate future looks a little brighter.
  11. Consider this hypothetical scenario. Batter A leads off with a single. Batter B grounds into a fielders choice out, and is now on first. Batter C doubles, putting men on 2nd and 3rd. Batter D hits a weak grounder to 2nd, scoring the runner on 3rd. Clearly the key item in this sequence is the double, and that batter is credited with neither an RBI or a run. The 2nd most important item in the sequence is the single, and likewise, that batter is credited with neither an RBI or a run. Now I'll grant that this isn't going to happen often, but it's certainly one reason the sabre crowd is dismissive of stats like RBI and runs. They're both largely a product of placement in the batting order, and who you have batting around you. ANYONE who can put up a slash line of even .325/.475/.800 hitting cleanup will drive in 100, if he's got a 1-2-3 in front of him that gets on base at a league average clip.
  12. http://espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/story/_/id/8490251/josh-hamilton-waited-quit-chewing-tobacco Basically, Rangers president Nolan Ryan is being critical of the timing of Josh Hamilton giving up tobacco, saying he should have waited til the off-season. I'm sorry, I didn't know there was ever a 'bad time' to stop putting addictive, harmful substances into your body. On the other hand, this article has some good stuff from Hamilton too, about how he had such a horrible 2nd half because caffeine. Guy doesn't run out of excuses, that's for sure.
  13. I guess age has something to do with it, but I think a more telling identifier would be "who is your pick for MVP, and what stats do you look at first? OBP, wOBA, OPS, or BA, RBI, and runs?" There's plenty of older folks that subscribe to the new age of baseball metrics. Oh, and 38, Trout. In a landslide.
  14. Yeah, but you're assuming the at bats that happened after the stoppage happen in the vacuum of being exactly the same despite being bases loaded instead of 2 on 2 outs. The complexion changes, and we can't assume that anything that happened after that point is simply going to occur the same on a one for one basis. Terrible call, and that it happened during Bud's one game folly of a 'playoff' only magnifies what a terrible idea this is.
  15. Besides, what was he going to do, refuse to move off of 1st base after the Tigers signed Fielder? I'm tired of hearing the argument that him 'volunteering' to move to third somehow enhances his MVP'ness. I don't care what the circumstances are that caused you to end up at a defensive spot. If you're not good at it, I'm not going to give you MVP kudos for it.
  16. So? Are the results any less valid because you think the talent is not equal to that of a 94 win team? I don't think you'll find too many people that would disagree that the A's played over their heads this year, so I'm not really sure what the point you're trying to make is. They had a great year, why should the fans, or just baseball fans in general, feel any less entitled about enjoying it simply because of 'variance'?
  17. I would say someone forgot to tell the A's they were not contenders, but they heard that plenty this year. Lollerskates.
  18. I realize that Navarro is just a backup catcher, but did Ax need to tempt it by throwing meatball after meatball? I guess Axford blowing a save is really a fitting way for the last gasp hope of this team to be shattered, isn't it?
  19. What's bugging me? People that come to visit unannounced, eat my food, tease my dog, stay for 7 hours, generally inconvenience people in my house, and then act put-out when at 11 pm, I make mention of the fact that I have to get to bed, as I work at 6 am the next day. Oh, and then they need a ride home. This is the third weekend in a row this event has occurred, for family relations sake I have to be diplomatic about how I handle this, which makes it even more frustrating.
  20. Every team has a handful of fans that make the "they're done" statements, and then when they get hot, they disappear. Then, when they fall short at the end, they show back up with the "I told you so" nonsense. Of course they'll insist all along that "I wanted them to make the playoffs, I was just keeping it real." I'm sure if the Crew falls short, we'll find out if we have any of those types of 'fans'.
  21. It still might suck 2 years from now (maybe even next year), but there's absolutely no doubt he's been worth every penny this year.
  22. With Beltre, you can make a legitimate argument that he's been the best 3B defender in MLB over the course of his career. Ramirez certainly isn't a liability with the glove, but he's nowhere near the caliber of Beltre. If the writers cared about anything other than batting average, homeruns, RBI, and stolen bases, Dwight Evans would have been in the HOF before Jim Rice.
  23. I've heard Adrian Beltre brought up as a possible HoF'er, and he's an OPS+ of 114, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
  24. I'm with you on this Russ. There may be some apathetic players out there, but I think most of them, once they step on the field, block most everything else out, and give max effort most of the time.
