  1. I've had a random driver call my boss once when I was in a company vehicle with the number on the side and leave him a message saying I was driving drunk. I was pulling out of the parking lot of a bar and had zero drinks, just stopped in because it was the nearest ATM since I was in the middle of nowhere. I didn't cut anyone off or do anything wrong. I almost got fired the next day. Never underestimate what random people will do. What kind of car was he driving too? Probably draws even more attention Rationalizing a little bit? It could have been the car, or whatever. Fact is, someone called it in, and he got pulled over, and he blew a .22. I think there's enough here to leap to the conclusion that there was a reason the random motorist called it in.

  3. As I recap season three, the thing that really strikes me, is the thing I feared going into it, and that's that, IMO of course, the show veered away from the more gritty realism it was shooting for in seasons 1 and 2 and went with more cartoony caricature type characters here in season 3. The Governor's henchmen were the very archetype of 'goon' style rent-a-henchmen that I almost expect to be working for the Joker or the Penguin in a Batman comic. Most of the new characters that were introduced in season 3 just seemed to be very much cartoon or comic book caricatures (Governor and Michonne especially) rather than fleshed out personalities. When the henchmen were doing 'bad guy stuff', it got to the point where I wasn't surprised to hear the 'evil chuckle' or see the sly grin on their faces like "we know something you don't know, because we're up to no good".
  4. Not a bad episode, but a really weak season finale. At least this time they delivered on the 'major character death', unlike the big fight at the farm, in which the only deaths were place-holder characters who played no actual roles in the show.
  5. Wow. Now I AM pissed. 3 years 33 mil for a guy that was sitting a week before opening day waiting for a job.
  6. I'm not mad, but I'm not exactly happy either. Who's bumped from the rotation now?
  7. Badgers have been horribly sloppy with the ball in teh first half, and Bruesewitz has been a turnover machine. He is the absolute arch-type of the gangly, uncoordinated white guy that Wisconsin is known for. All that being said, the usual smothering defense has them up at the half.
  8. I work at home, and my office is in my basement. My new phone actually pushes out the EBS 'tone' (as I found out yesterday) during emergency alerts, and then puts a message on the screen about the type of weather emergency it is. I certainly didn't panic, but I was definitely puzzled, and went upstairs and looked outside to see why in the world we were getting a tornado warning. Yes, you were puzzled. Exactly. Why? Because you are an informed person who at least pays some attention to weather forecasts and have some reasonable thoughts about the types of conditions in which tornadoes form. You didn't automatically think.."OMG, a tornado!" Some of the "viewer feedback" that they showed on the news last night regarding this story just made me shake my head. People were not questioning it, nor were they "puzzled" by it. They just automatically thought there was a tornado. When I got it on my phone, I was puzzled by the "icon" that showed up that I had never seen before. When I clicked on it and saw what it was, my first thought was that somehow the integrity of my phone had been compromised. I didn't think it was something wrong with the phone, I thought it was either an erroneous reporting of 'tornado' rather than snow, but even then, I knew the heavy snow wasn't supposed to start until this morning, though we did have some snow in southern Wisconsin about that time yesterday. I checked weatherchannel.com, and even they had "tornado warning until 10:45 am", and that's why I went upstairs to look. Light grey skies, no wind, and light snow at the time, I was like "meh", and figured something was just messed up in the reporting.

  10. What hurts Whitaker is he never had that "WOW" season like Robin had in '82. Lou was NEVER a dominant player, hew as always just a pretty good one, to very good one. Whitaker never had an OPS+ over 150 (tops was 141), Robin got over 150 (what I personally consider a 'dominant' offensive season) 3 times. Overall, their careers are extremely similar, but Lou doesn't have the counting numbers that Yount does (including the milestone number, 3000), or the few dominating seasons like Yount had, including those 2 MVP's. Now, the argument can be made that those MVP's and counting stats aren't nearly as important as rate stats, and for the sake of figuring out who was simply a better player, I agree, but the Hall does (and should) consider counting stats as a criteria. Would I vote for Lou? Probably, and I honestly like Lou's case a LOT more than Trammel's, to be honest. But, I don't think it's a tragedy that he's not in there.
  11. Watched his run-in with Heller this past weekend. I love that video. For obvious reasons, I won't/can't post a link here, in a 3 minute video, there's got to be 30 f-bombs between he and Heller.
  12. I'm only going to respond to that to say I'm not going to respond to that. You're digging such a ridiculous hole of improbability just to prove a point that there's no way to even justify responding to the things you're asking. Congratuluations I guess.
  13. Ok, but that's not what you said. You said you hope that there's no video that comes out of him playing basketball or golf or something like that. Which is why people have to resort to saying things like "SUR-GU-RY", because either you don't get it, or now you're backtracking.
  14. If he's going under the knife, it's not sandbagging, plain and simple. Can't believe it's even being suggested. Injury prone? Sure. Sandbagging? I'm starting to think there are people who don't understand what it's like to rehab from some of these surgeries. I guarantee you the rehab is more work than just going to spring training.
  15. Actually, yes. Luis Gonzalez went from a 25 homer guy to a 31 homer guy to 57 in the span of three seasons. There's more at work here than simply "steroids did it". I'm not saying Luis Gonzalez did or did not do steroids. He may have, he may not have. I don't know. But I think people who assume steroids can make you hit 30 more homers per season are overstating the effects of what they can do for you.
  16. So then should I assume that you think Gonzalez, Anderson, Green & Piazza were not using steroids? Or are you just unwilling to pass judgment on them absent more concrete evidence? Tommy Holmes hit 28 homers in 1945, with a .997 OPS. Never in his career before or after did he hit more than 13 homers, or have an OPS higher than .828. Was he juicing? By your definition and standards of judgement, he pretty much had to have been, yes? Roger Maris hit 61 homers in '61, yet never hit as many as 40 in any other season. That's pretty fishy, isn't it? George Foster hit 52 and 40 homers, respectively, in 77 and 78, yet in an 18 year career, never hit more than 30 in any other season. History is FULL of these types of seasons. Outliers happen. It's the nature of the game. Assuming that every time they do it's because of something fishy, or because someone cheated is a huge fallacy on the part of the viewer (in my opinion only of course)
  17. This is like the Salem Witch Trials (Except without the drowning and burning and stuff) Back acne? GUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILTY!!!!!!!!! Big head? GUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILTY!!!!!!! You were a teammate of Jose Canseco for 3 months? GUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Heck..........."You played in the 80's or 90's?" GUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILTY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope that sometime within our lifetimes, the way the HOF chooses to put new members in is completely overhauled, and we look back at this period, and realize how completely ludicrous this witch hunt really was.
  18. Especially considering the field next year. I would have to assume Maddux goes in 1st vote and anyone who leaves him off should lose their vote. Glavine, Big Hurt, Mussina, Kent etc added to the mix. There are writers who turn in blank ballots, especially on guys like Maddux, because they say "nobody should go in with 100% of the vote" I find that notion ridiculous. If you think a guy is deserving, vote him in. If not, don't. This whole thing has become a laughable farce.
  19. Adam, when I was 35 (back in 2010), (relatively young, I suppose), my dad died in February, my mom died in June, then my father in law died in August. I can say for sure that I understand the 'suddenly orphaned' feeling that you're going through. Can I tell you how to cope with it? Not so much. Just like any kind of grieving, this is something I think every person has to figure out for themselves. I wish I could say "step A, step B, step C", but what works for one person, isn't going to necessarily work for another person. I didn't get along very well with my dad, but we mended our fences before his passing, and I'm glad we did. I still miss and think about my mom every single day. Heck, there's still an occasion every now and then where something that I think she'd laugh at or chuckle at will happen, and I'll think to call her and be like "oh........yeah". I wish this post could be more help, but it's just one of those things..........it sucks. There's no other way to put it. Losing the people we care about sucks. You think 'if only.......', but there's just, ya know, there's no take-backs. For me, talking about my mom, and to some extent my dad, it's melancholy, but it keeps their memory alive for me. For my oldest brother, he's the "I don't want to talk about it" type. He copes by not talking about things. Like I said, there's no one right answer you're going to get. If 30 people post in this thread, you'll get 30 different answers. I think you'll find your own way. I guess the biggest thing I can offer is if you want to talk about your parents, don't hesitate to find people who are willing to listen.
  20. I remember back in 2011, he had an AWFUL start to the season, and then out of nowhere, he threw that no hitter, but even the no hitter was kind of.......ugly. 2 K's, 6 walks. There was a newspaper that had the headline "LIRIANO CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE, THROWS NO-HITTER"
  21. In Janesville, they rarely cancel, yet school was cancelled for Friday as of 7 pm last night, despite the storm being mostly over. We got 5-6" of snow Wednesday night into Thursday, then it rained for several hours, and then the 'blizzard' portion of the storm hit, and we got probably another 6 to 8" of snow. It's such a slushy, jagged-icy mess right now that the roads were still an amazing hazard this morning. Don't blame them for making the call last night. The combo of snow/rain/freezing rain/snow turned what we got into a layered effect of something awful. No offense to anyone, but the "I can't wait for this huge storm!" people always bug me. People die in accidents, flights get cancelled by the thousands, people lose power.......I just don't see what's exciting about that to anybody. I understand being interested in it from a scientific/academic point of view, but reading facebook and seeing the "I can't wait!" people........it just makes me want to slug people in the neck.
  22. In order for the Brewers to be a 85 win team Braun will have to play at an MVP like level again with Weeks, Hart, Ramirez, Aoki, Gallardo, Lucroy and Axford all performing around an All Star level. This is not to mention that Peralta, Fiers, Estrada, Rogers, Segura and Henderson will all have to be at or above league average. This really doesn't make sense. You're basically saying that if we have one guy have an MVP caliber season, and then 5 of the remaining offensive starters have all star caliber seasons, AND the rotation is all at least above league average, with Gallardo performing at an all star level, you'd consider that an 85 win team? I realize the bullpen was bad last year, but they'd almost have to fall into an incredible vortex of bad luck to be that bad again this year. Either you're assuming the bullpen will be historically bad (again), or you're undervaluing exactly what an 'all star' level performance really is.
  23. One has to wonder. You compared WAR to boob lube and flippy dippy. WAR is a stat. Flippy dippy and boob lube are not. WAR is a stat that is derived by a players on field contributions. The word 'arbitrary' makes it sound like someone just decides "I've watched them both play, I think, based on what I've seen, Trout was 10 WAR, and I'll say, Cabrera was.........eh, about an 8 WAR". That's not how WAR works. It's not arbitrary. It's a formula based on actual things the player did, on the field. Flippy dippy and boob lube are not statitistics. As far as I know, they're not even baseball related.
  24. But the arbitrariness of formula stats like WAR or FLIPPY-DIPPY or BOOB-LOOB or whatever else someone makes up doesn't seem to bother you. Yes. "Flippy Dippy" and "Boob Loob" are totally comparable to WAR or wOBA, which are an actual, reasonably accurate way to measure a player's contributions, and aren't actually arbitrary. The best way to argue the validity of something isn't to question the accuracy of the statistic or try to understand how someone came to the numbers, it's to ridicule it in such an inane fashion as to render your point completely moot.
  25. Maybe a little OT, and thinking a little too far into the future......... But I'm a little heartened by the fact that Brauny was on all 32 ballots. If he continues to play like this for 8-9-10 years, and has a Chipper Jones-like career (minus the injuries), I think the voting results can put to rest our fears about him getting the cold shoulder from Hall voters. Maybe I'm wrong, but this seemed like the first litmus test in that regard, at any rate.
