  1. not to beat a dead horse, but I find it interesting that Schroeder is talking about how J.J. Hardy "really turned it around" in the 2nd half last year because (specifically) he makes contact. I know we've been over it, but J.J.'s numbers went through the roof when he started striking out more. I'm not saying the strikeouts helped, I think it was just a byproduct of being more aggresive and trying to drive the ball, instead of dinking and dunking the ball around the infield.
  2. Overbay wasn't any better on D than Prince will turn out to be.
  3. I don't mean to start harping on Schroeder so soon, but I mean, it's the first inning, and he's blah blah blahing about how awful strikeouts are, and making contact rules, and even though Jenks hit into a double play, that was better than striking out.
  4. I'm sure my brother will play if I ask him clancy. He's in leagues every year and hasn't signed on for any yet, so I'm sure he'd be happy to play.
  5. How are you looking for players for this league so far Clancy? I might be interested in doing another.
  6. brewers19... going back to your original post.. I don't think anyone here is "demanding respect", but I think a lot of people at THIS site demand that people back up statements (such as "we should accept that Dana Eveland sucks" with more than just blustery opinion. The fact that the majority of the posters here ARE so knowledgeable, and DO back up what they say with a mountain of evidence is why (to me at least) this is such a great place to post. If I want to read posts that say "Hardy suxors! LOLOL!" I'll just go over to ESPN.
  7. There's no reason to sacrifice quality, but at the same time, we don't have to be jerks about it. If I may comment here......... I agree with both points of that sentence Brian. I have to point out when I started posting here nearly 4 years ago, I had no clue what OPS was. I didn't know what OXS was, or VORP, or OPS+, or any of that. I made rash generalizations, based on what I "saw with my eyes"........so on and so forth. And I was "jumped" for it. I'm not saying it's right, but I took the lumps, learned the lesson (made a new username) and moved on. It was quickly apparent that the level of baseball conversation at this site was a cut above anything else out there. I'm not here to defend anyone specifically, but I also don't remember any knight in shining armor jumping to my aid when I was getting the same treatment for not knowing the Ps and Qs (and OXS's and VORPS). I just don't think the level of discussion is as high as it used to be, and in my opinion it's not the one liners and quips that bring it down, it's thread after thread about how spring training stats are the be all-end all, Dana Eveland must obviously suck, JJ Hardy will never be any good.....etc, etc.
  8. Hopefully none of our guys ever have the control issues THIS guy had............. http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/images/2005/02/28/5fgujUqq.jpg
  9. Sarfate's big issue has been control all through his minor league career. No doubt he's got the "stuff", just needs to harness it.
  10. Where is the webcast for this game? Anybody?
  11. Here's my take. Drew's a public figure. He's very open to criticism. He knows this as well as anyone. When he chose to disclose the fact that someone asked if he did opium, HE's the one he acted unprofessionally. Those are the sort of questions he could very easily have chosen to ignore, just like all the tough questions he usually dodges around. I'm absolutely willing to bet "do you smoke opium" is no sillier than handfuls of questions he gets in every chat. As far as the "eye of the Tiger" thing, there's absolutely no reason he shouldn't be called out on that. That article was horse crap, plain and simple. If Drew doesn't like being in the public eye, he doesn't have to be a sportswriter. EDIT: I just noticed this comment... The thread was to the point of providing no substantial dialogue/information and was closed. That could be said of about 90% of the threads here. EVERY thread here usually runs it's course to the point where things are just getting re-said, because everyone has to have the last word. Should those be locked as well?
  12. I wasn't so much offended so much, as just put back by the "nazi" comment. No, I'm not all touchy feely about people's feelings being hurt, but I know the site has gone through a lot of nonsense the last several months with a lot of new posters, and a re-establishment of some ground rules. I had hoped that people would draw the line from Hall to Ginter (deserving player consistently pushed to the bench) in that thread, which I guess I should have been more explicit about. Although, bringing up the G word would no doubt spark another controversial debate at any rate, so it's probably for the best. Lastly, I get the feeling that the "nazi" stuff is reserved for people who are or have been redundant, or who repeatedly complain about the way things work at Brewerfan. I've been here, oh, let's say 3 years or so (not sure) and I'm not a thread starter that often, and I try as much as anyone to disagree or agree with other posters with civility. I'm not in any way saying I'm deserving of "special treatment" (yes I am) but it just seemed rather abrupt. Thanks.
  13. I started a "different" trade Hall thread on the rumor forum, for a very different reason than others were, and it was locked by the self prescribed "thread nazi." With all due respect, I don't *really* have a problem with a thread being locked, but can we just say "duplicate thread, this one's locked"? I offered up a different reason for why I thought Hall should be traded, and I thought it deserved it's own thread. Apparently not, but the "in your face" way the moderator chose to go about it wasn't exactly what I'd call professional for a site that markets and carries itself as such 99% of the time. Thanks.
  14. Serenity Call me sacreligious, but this was the best sci-fi/fantasy movie of the year. If only the Star Wars prequels loved their original source material as much as this film obviously did. Ah well, at least Serenity gave me my much needed Han Solo fix, as George sure wasn't about too. My wife was a fan of the Firefly tv series, so we checked this one out. I'm not into sci-fi at all, and I found this to be a really good movie based on expectations. And yeah, it was better than Ep. III.
  15. In my time posting here, I've found nothing that incites arguing rather than discussing more than this phrase "I guarantee.........." People that state their opinion as facts.............. I'm not pointing out any poster, because I don't recall names. But I know of at least three that have posted "Guarantees" that Branyan won't be a Brewer in 2006. What's wrong with saying "I don't believe", or "I hope Branyan isn't a Brewer" or even "I don't see a reason Branyan should be a Brewer next year" They're all at least debatable on an adult level. When you say "I guarantee" you're stating that you're right, and everyone else is wrong. I guarantee that as long as Branyan IS a Brewer, these discusssions will keep coming up. And that guarantee, you can take to the bank.
  16. So the guy made a mistake, he's suffered enough. I guess I don't equate not being in the Hall of Fame as *suffering* As Robert pointed out, his achievements are honored in the Hall of Fame. The only thing he's missing is a plaque. Too bad for him.
  17. http://www.petco.com/assets/product_images/9/9761240042B.jpg I vote no.
  18. I noticed at my suggestion, a rumor was moved to the trade forum last week. We had 2 threads in the MLB forum, one titled "Nomar to the Astros" which was a rumor, and another titled "Mueller to the Dodgers" which was actually a completed deal. Just glancing at the titles, there's bound to be confusion. If people put "rumored" signings in the "rumors" forum, then there's no question as to what's what. It seems like that's the sentiment around here anyways, so an official name change of the rumors forum makes sense to me.
  19. It is indeed going to get ugly as this era's sluggers (and maybe even the next) become hall eligible. Voting 'no" based on alleged steroid use is going to be a sticky, sticky situation. Sheffield? Bonds? Palmeiro? (ok, he got caught!) McGriff? Are voters going to be instructed to vote based on numbers only? Or are they going to be allowed to take into account "alleged" steroid use? If that's the case, we've heard rumblings of just about EVERY major homerun hitter who's played in the last 20 years.
  20. Sin City Watched the first 2 stories and liked it so far. The Bruce Willis bit was kinda lame, IMO. Marv's story was excellent. Batman Begins I thought it was way better than any of the original four movies. Action scenes were a little lacking, but I didn't get the sense that action was what this movie was all about, so it didn't really bother me . Went way more in depth developing Batman's persona than "Joker killed my parents, I'm a vigilante" from the originals. For some reason, for comic book movies, I really enjoy the "character builder" movies that usually start a series. Kingdom of Heaven Not bad. Not great. Pretty cool fight scenes. If you've seen Return of the King, the final siege of Jerusalem will look pretty familiar. Definately a "message" trying to be told in this movie. The Longest Yard Pretty decent, but not as gut bustingly funny as everyone I've talked to made it out to be.
  21. We did it. Here's hoping that as Brewer fans, we NEVER EVER have to get this worked up about 81 wins again. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  22. And that's a winner. Good win tonight, even if it took a little longer than it should have.
  23. Ok, I'm bringing this up because Schroeder has mentioned it in EVERY HELLING START. It's unbelievable what he's doing, because he's only pitched 30! innings this year! Oh boy wow! How he's managed to stretch himself out to start is beyone belief!" !!!!!!! He was starting all year in Nashville Bill. I don't know if maybe pitching in the minor leagues doesn't stretch your arm, or whatever, maybe physics cease to apply below the major league level. Get a clue for cryin' out loud.
  24. Although the hit-and-run worked, I guess I'm not convinced that it's a great place to use it- with 2 outs and the pitcher on deck. Totally agree here. The only thing going to score Hall is an extra base hit, and with 2 outs, he can go on contact ANYWAYS, and will likely score from first without the hit and run.
