  1. I thought that Rivera and Parra were tight - I am surprised it isnt him. that said, I am glad that it it somebody. There is no reason for Kendall to catch so many games...
  2. Joey Meyer is the mvp of this list.
  3. theres been pining. my first thought when I heard that he had been dfa'd was that we finally can stop with the vinny rottino love affair...
  4. I think that this season depends on Gallardo and Parra stepping up. We know what we get with Bush, Suppan, and Looper. Yo and Parra have loads of potential and we need them to realize it this season.
  5. as a reserve infielder this is a great signing. he is an above average defender that can play all the infield spots, solid veteran presence on a still rather young team, good guy to ph late in games when you need baserunners (as Naivan mentioned above). As long as Macha doesnt decide that Counsell should be platooning at 2b (or anywhere for that matter!) I am happy with this move.
  6. this was my first thought as well. but, the contract/money issue seemed to really bother Prince last year. maybe the thought is to get him taken care of for the next 2 years and let him concentrate on baseball. i am excited for him to stay. i really think that the Brewers need to develop a sense of continuity to remain a competitive franchise. having a core of Prince, Braun, Hardy, Hart, Gallardo, Parra for the next 3-4 years and filling in with the next round of young guys (Gamel, Salome, Escobar, Jeffers, etc) is the key to long term success imo. Plus, having a solid core will make the this a better destination for free agents in the future...
  7. I have some concerns about the rotation as it stands now: 1. we are asking really a lot of 2 young pitchers. Yo missed almost all of last year and he has to come back this year and be the ace of the staff. We have to hope that he is up to the challenge. Parra made it thru his first season injury free last year, but faded badly at the end. Can he get past his poor finish and be a solid #2 like this team needs him to be? Maybe they are both up for it, but I don't think it can be taken for granted that they both make these strides this year. 2. There is no depth. An injury to Yo, Parra, Suppan, or Bush is devastating. If one of these 4 goes down, I think any hopes for the playoffs go down with them...
  8. this will be the problem with waiting around for CC - making decisions on other guys like bush. If CC somehow stays a brewer and sheets accepts arbitration, suddenly Bush might be expendable in a deal to get a LH bat or whatever else we need. When CC leaves, and we dont have sheets anymore then we have little pitching depth and Bush gets harder to trade...
  9. the brewers will have to offer him arbtration, and he might just accept. I am sure that it isnt what he has hoped for, but he is going to have a hard time finding a mutli year deal. I predict he is a brewer next year in another fee agent season...
  10. I am not so sure about that. with big (old!) akward body and balky back I have hard time picturing him being ready to pitch everyday...
  11. i dont have any problem with svuem (yet), but I hope this interview is a part of a process and that other qualified canditates are interviewed as well. I think that Melvin deserves some credit in being able to find the best guy.
  12. I can understand not liking "small ball" as a general principle, but I have no problem at all with what Svuem tried to do with incorporating some of it into some of the games after he took over. the offense was in a horendous slump for the whole month before he took over. I was be more upset if he just sat there and expected not doing anything to be a better solution. a bunt > than watching another strikeout...
  13. I am pretty torn on signing CC. I would love to have him as a brewer long term. he is a very good pitcher, seems like a great guy - the kind of player that I would love watching take the mound every 5th day. I also think that signing him would give the crew a better sense of legitimacy around the league when it comes to getting other FA to come here (not top of the line guys because to be honest we couldnt afford them if CC signed, but the 2nd tier guys that come in to fill a hole for a year or 2). It would be similar to what Reggie White did for packers back in the 90's. BUT, that is a lot of money. If turns into a bust, it will CRIPPLE the team for many years. A team like milwaukee can not afford to miss on a player and a contract like this. I am not sure it is worth the risk. i think that I would love to see him in a brewer uniform next year, but will be happy and relieved if/when he signs elsewhere...
  14. I wonder if the early crappiness by suppan lead some people to switch over to the packers. They were behind by a lot rather early on. I bet that with a close brewer game the numbers might have been very different...
  15. Why do you think that? I don't know that he is the best choice to remain next year, but what did he do that was so terrible?
  16. I think that it is very likely to see Sheets back in a brewers uniform next year. The Brewers have to offer him arbitration, and he might just accept as his chances of securing a lucrative long term deal took a major hit the last 6 weeks of the season. Teams would have been worried about him before, but with the groin and the torn muscle ending his season prematurely again it might be in his best interest to do a 1 year deal and try to hit it big next offseason. This would be ideal for the brewers to get another year out of him without the risk of a long term deal. It would be an expensive year, but if Gagne is worth a $10 mil gamble, Sheets is worth a $12-15 mil gamble...
  17. i think that some of the problem is that there are too many holes in the lineup to "hide" guys like kendall and counsell - who are obviously getting pt based on their defense, not their offense. right now I have no confidence in anything good happening after jj bats. 6-9 is an absolute dark hole thats has virtually no chance of scoring a run or starting a rally. the spots in the lineup that I think could use upgrading offensively are C, 2b, 3b, cf. I dont see a change at C for next year. But I think that 2 of the other 3 spots need upgrading - with one of the spots filled by a more prototypical leadoff hitter.
  18. they defientley know it, but what else can they do? Gywnn is the only other ralistic option right now, and as unexciting as that is I wouldnt mind seeing it right now. too bad kapler got hurt, he woldnt be a huge upgrade out there at the moment.
  19. this is the most common at-bat for the brewers since the september slide started: 1st pitch fastball - called strike one. 2nd pitch breaking ball out of the zone - swung on and missed strike 2. sometimes it seems that they start every at bat down 0-2. this has been driving my crazy all season, but in particular the past few weeks. the next manager talk should include "see the ball, hit the ball" Stop Thinking!!
  20. i will appreciate him even more this evening after 7 innings of 1 run ball. this is such a huge start. not only for getting to the playoffs, but for the brewers chances in the playoffs. (not to get ahead of ourselves here, but) clinch tonite and CC doesnt need to pitch tomorrow. That sets it up so it is a rested CC game 1, sheets game 2 if healthy. otherwise what is it - bush and yo games 1 and 2? maybe CC on short rest again for game 2 instead of Yo? which would you rather have? this game is huge - c'mon Benny!
  21. i thought of this exact thread last night while witting at the game and watching mcclung. what a great performance! I am not sure about him closing. I think he culd maybe do it, but I like the fact that he can come in and go 2 or 3 innings. Not all relievers can do that - having a guy who can come in and go the 6/7 or 7/8 or 7/8/9 can be pretty useful and really save the bullpen. kind of what villenueva does...
  22. i dont know what is going on with him right now - he looks totally lost at the plate. too bad kapler is hurt, it would be great to have been able to get hart a few days off to get his act together.
  23. We're not the Cubs. We dont have that kind of money.i can see them making a run at CC. and if he really does like it and wants to stay I guess thats a possibility. as far as sheets, i think that this latest injury to his forearm makes it more likely that he will be back for at least a year. the brewers have to offer him arbitration, and it might be in his best interest to accept. teams might be hesitant to offer him a long term deal based on his continuing "problems" (groin, forearm). i mean, if you cant step up to pitch in a pennant race in your contract year - are you really worth a huge deal?
  24. always waiting for the homerun or the big hit is a big casue of the september collapse. the manager needs to know his team well enough to know when to let them swing away, and when to play small ball and try to get at least a run in. if you are on fire and scoring 5+ runs a night go ahead and swing away. when runs arent coming that easy, he needs to do what he can to get any run across possible. imo, small ball is a tool that can and should be used at times. that said, I do think that anytime this team has runners an 1st and 2nd with 0 outs and the #2 hitter at bat - it should be a bunt. i believe that 2nd and 3rd and 1 out with Braun and Prince coming up is better than risking what the 2nd hitter is going to do swinging away in that situation. those are the 2 best hitters on the teams and I want them to get their AB's with 2 runners in scoring position...
  25. you see brad nelson ph last night? he is a big dude! not sure if he can play anywhere in the OF at the major league level with that physique. hart at 1b is an interesting point that I had not thought of before. i think that we could see some roster shakeup this offseason, and Hart to 1b could be a possibility similar to what went on with Bill Hall last offseason. If Prince isnt here for whatever reason and we cant find a suitable replacement - Hart could fill at 1B and we could grab an OF. Not saying its likely or should happen, but could be a possibility...
