  1. He briefly played second in low A, I think.
  2. Rottino and Irribarren play entirely different positions.Rottino: C/3B/1B/LF/RF Irribarren: 2B/CF Their versatility is more accurately described as complementary than competitive.
  3. Not comparable to the Yankees. The only advantage is being close to "home" for CC. The tax hit would be big in CA, though... I'm starting to think the Brewers have a very good chance of keeping CC. If Sheets can be had for Dempster money... they'd have the best rotation in baseball.
  4. I choose C.:CC (20 million), Sheets (13.5), Gallardo, Parra, Bush/Suppan
  5. Figure this just became the floor for keeping Sheets.
  6. Rottino... may not be the future starting catcher, but he is going to be a valuable bench player at worst. Considering he was learning a new position full-time, I'm not holding his dropoff against him. Salome may beat him out as the starter, but Rottino becomes the Brewers' backup 1B/3B/LF/RF/3rd catcher. The team could do MUCH worse off the bench, and has. If Escobar is Counsell's replacement, then that's three out of six positions on the bench filled. Figure Irribarren competes with TGJ for the backup CF job. Then that leaves two more from whoever the Brewers hav. Call it the other half of a Hall/Branyan platoon and Brad Nelson. So, that makes the Brewers' bench: Rivera © Rottino (C/1B/3B/LF/RF) Escobar (SS/2B) Hall (3B/SS/2B/CF) or Branyan (3B/1B/LF/RF) Nelson (LF/1B/RF) Irribarren (CF/2B)
  7. Actually, the Giants lefty to pinch - Erick Threets. He's two years younger and one level higher.
  8. The better option would be to keep Sabathia and Sheets - that gives the Crew a deep bullpen because guys like Villanueva and Dillard won't have to be tossed into the rotation mix.
  9. If Sabathia and Sheets stick around, yes, that is a great bullpen. If not, then Dillard, McClung, and/or Villanueva could find themselves competing for spots in the rotation.
  10. How hard would it be to offer Bush a 5-year deal for $34 million ($2 million bonus, $6 million/year for 2009, 2010, 2011, $7 million for 2012, 2013)?
  11. He had a great year playing second for the Crew. .424 OBP. Oh, if we could get that from Rickie Weeks... [drools]
  12. Well worth doing, IMO. And then, the Crew can turn its efforts to getting Ben Sheets back into the fold. Sabathia-Sheets-Gallardo-Parra-Bush
  13. I thought he should have had the job in 2003. So Macha and Castro, the guys who almost were in 2003, now take the reins for 2009. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. I'd go three years, $36 million. The extra year may work - even at a lower price.
  15. With Counsell's option not being picked up, Escobar's role next year seems obvious: Counsell's old job as backup 2B/SS.
  16. Bill Castro was interim pitching coach in 2002... perhaps he gets to be pitching coach without the "interim" title in 2009?
  17. I'm hoping he doesn't take Gillespie. Cole could be our leadoff guy.
  18. Bill Castro didn't do a bad job as interim coach after Dave Stewart quit. It could be a chance to give him that promotion Maddux beat him out for in `03.
  19. He's 32 for 2008, no options left. In essence, if he does well in spring training, but doesn't make the cut, he's likely to be snapped up by somebody. McGeehee is 25, has options left, and is much younger. Using the MLE spreadsheet, his MLE are a .272/.309/.384. If you ask me, he seems like a marginal improvement over Bill Hall. That said, he doesn't just play third base. He also had 17 games at catcher last year, posting a .982 fielding percentage, as well as 32 games at first.
  20. Anderson is old, but played 145 games last year. Worth a one-year deal, I think, and you could insert him in the #6 slot of the lineup, but Cole Gillespie may be a better OBP guy - and would be a lot cheaper.
  21. I wish they'd gone with FieldTurf instead.
  22. My thoughts are that Sveum is there to keep Kendall happy - or less upset.
  23. Think of another option: Cameron's played half his games in an extreme pitchers park (Petco) until 2008. He could be a decent corner OF bat as well if the Brewers reach a point of extreme desperation vis-a-vis third base.
  24. I am obviously a big Gamel backer - but I doubt Gamel has any chance of starting the season as the 3B. He really needed to play in the Arizona Winter League. His injury alone will set back his development. (Defensively at least) I would say the bigger problem is that if the Brewers believe Gamel can play 3B, what to do with Escobar and Hardy. You can't ask someone to move twice. Simple: Escobar replaces Counsell as the backup 2B/SS, and the Brewers save about $2.75 million.
