  1. Haudricort gave Looper a C+. After all he got all those wins!
  2. A #3 starter a reliever and a guy? No.
  3. I think Boston's check book will be the bigger issue.
  4. It shouldn't be that hard to replace a 1 WAR corner outfielder. It is when you have only $4m to spend. I mean they could keep Cameron and play Gerut in RF but that costs more.
  5. Biggest issue is that the Brewers don't really have anyone to replace Hart.
  6. If the Brewers want to trade for pitching they have redundant players at 2 positions, SS and 3B. That's where the pitching will come from. Hardy won't bring back a top flight pitcher because of the time he has before FA. That leaves players with significant team control left. So if you want Escobar, Gamel or McGehee definitely has to be moved to get that pitcher.
  7. I think that Ben was 'hated' by the 'fair weather fan' crowd. These people would have hated on Paul Molitor in the 1980's as well. I would guess most people who have been fans for the long term realize that he's arguably the best pitcher this franchise has ever had. For god's sake he started the all-star game last year. I can kind of understand why he is bent out of shape at the Brewers. Instead of wasting $50 million on Jeff Suppan, they could have extended Sheets 3 years or so. I would guess that even after missing the entire season, some of Sheets' sabermetric stats were better than Suppan's last year. Sheets had a value of 0.0 WAR. Suppan was at -0.7 WAR. So yes Sheets had more value to the Brewers.
  8. Look at FIP or something similar. For Nolasco his FIP is 3.35, meaning given his K/9. BB/9, and HR/9 and an average BABIP he'd have an ERA of 3.35. Why a 5 ERA then? A high BABIP of .336 explains part of it. Another part is a strand rate of 61.0% which is really low. You'd expect a pitcher to be around 70% in general and Nolasco for his career has a rate of 67.9%
  9. Gerut, Cameron's likely replacement, will likely be 2-2.5 wins worse than Cameron by a combination of defense and offense. Your pitcher needs to be worth at least that much.
  10. Its hard to say. Nolasco had a bad ERA this year but that was mainly due to luck and he's under control for one more year. Johnson is likely to get a big boost in salary this year and only has 2 year remaining. It depends if the Marlins are in another cost dumping mode or not. That said either will require a decent amount of talent going back and they're set at shortstop so that leaves Gamel.
  11. Maybe there is something to this Brewer-Cardinal thing... Belliard drives in the tying run in the bottom of the 9th and Loretta the winning run. Former Brewers ruining LaRussa's day. Edited thread title to reflect posts about multiple games - hawing
  12. People are missing what this was. Its not tuse WAR to predict records, we know how to do that for a team with better correlations. Its to show that WAR is constructed in such a way that even with it not taking into account lots of thins you'd like if you were predicting how many games a team won with base stats it comes close meaning it does a decent job of representing the talent level present.
  13. Signing Washburn to any type of deal is horrible.
  14. The Brewers can't keep both Gamel and McGehee if they hope to trade for a pitcher. That's the whole point. Sure if they had an option fo getting a pitcher a different way they could keep both but they don't. Hardy won't bring back a top major league arm because any team trading for Hardy is in a win now mode. You're likely looking at a top AA arm for Hardy if they trade for best talent. Hart has had two bad seasons in a row, his value is at rock bottom. Salome's value is low and until he can prove he can really catch they are unlikely to shop Lucroy. That leaves Lawrie who really isn't extraneous since when he's ready Weeks might be gone.
  15. Actually most do take yearly losses and make it up upon the sale of the team. The type of operating profits the Brewers have is really large.
  16. Yeah it still considered tampering until the player is actually a free agent which doesn't happen until after World Series. The idea that this could become chronic means McGehee should be gone if the opportunity presents itself.
  17. Paying down debt=putting cash in his pocket.
  18. That's what he entered the year with. I think the Dodgers had him in the minor's long enough that he didn't get quite enough days but its not really easy to find days spent on the roster (at least that I know of). As for Villaneuva, he'll have over 3 years so I think he might have to pass through waivers to use an option and he's arby eligible so that makes it a bit more complicated.
  19. Vargas doesn't look to be a FA. Riske is under contract and likely on the DL until June anyway. Hoffman, Stetter, Coffey and DeFelice if healthy are locks. Vargas if he's not a FA will likely be back. Narveson is out of options so if he's not bumping Suppan/Bush out of the rotation he's here or they are. That leaves one spot and it shouldn't be an expensive choice like McClung or Weathers.
  20. Yount was also "done." His fall off from MVP was steep.
  21. There's also Morgan but he's even less visible than Cameron. It really depends upon whether Kemp takes a spot due to his hitting.
  22. Corner OFers almost never win gold gloves
  23. I think they keep Vargas (I think he's just short of FA). He's not this good but at his cost he's decent. I think Narveson is competing for a rotation spot or given McClung's job for sure. So that's 6 right there.
  24. He won't get less. He'll get a raise between 500k-1m most likely.
  25. If the Royals say Greinke for Braun its hard to say no and it makes some sense for both teams.
