  1. Again Sheets 5yr/$90m and Sabathia at 7yr/$160 is the ballpark,
  2. The point is Weeks has an upside, Counsell doesn't
  3. McClung can't go to AAA. He's out of options.
  4. I depends on A)the replace McClung vs replacing Bush and B) if McCung is the 4.75 ERA guy he's pitching like right now or the 5.5 ERA guy he's been
  5. Have peopel actually looked at Counsell's hitting line? It isn't better than Weeks'. And given Yost, he'll put Dillion at 2B and keep Hall at 3B anyway.
  6. It has nothing to do with this year's attendance but future years. A competitive team that wins little won't be able to keep the attendance up. See Cleveland.
  7. Right, I mean the closest that happened may have been the Suppan signing but then we had to deal with a rather large amount of money. There is no evidence that Attansio called up Melvin and said make the trade for Sabathia or else. And the financial impact is only about $5 million or so And all this doesn't mean I'm against the trade, rather agnostic leaning towards good until the full complement of players is known
  8. They need Dave Bush to fill a rotation spot cheaply for the next 3 years.
  9. Not sure why you think Attanasio would have a huge amount of input on this trade when very little money is actually involved.
  10. The Dodgers will need a pitcher and have like $30 m coming off in bad contracts (Garciaparra, Kent, Berroa, ) plus Lowe with even more coming off next year with Schmidt and Jones.
  11. Without sustained improvements its doubtful the Brewers can keep up this attendance pace. They need to do something more than win 83 games. That what I mean by financial pressure. And yes I'm sure Mark Attanasio is fine with the deal, after all he's the one who would fire Melvin if he doesn't make the playoffs. I think most assume no playoffs this year and Yost is gone. That starts the countdown on Melvin.
  12. Right now my guess at contracts would be 5 years/$90 m for Sheets and 7 years/$160 m for Sabathia
  13. I 'm saying Melvin made this move because he knows that this is likely his best chance to make the playoffs in teh foreseeable future. He's not getting Sabathia for the playoffs, he's getting him because there is a lot of pressure on him professionally and on the team financially to finally make the playoffs.
  14. I'm not saying Melvin was terrible in Texas. I'm saying that Doug Melvin is soon to be 56 in a position thats trending to hiring 30 to 40 year olds. And there are only 30 GM jobs out there.
  15. Now if Steve Phillips also thinks its a bad move you know we have a winner!
  16. Sure Melvin will get a job but he might never get another GM job. He did very little for the Rangers and he would have failed to get the Brewers to the playoffs despite having the best rookie offensive season ever, the youngest player to hit 50 home runs and a top ten pitcher.
  17. I think you are undervaluing the worth of one marginal game when you are at 85 wins. Also for those other pitchers on notch down (ie Bedard, Harden) you would still likely have to give up LaPorta because of the years remaining on their contracts. EDIT:And yes Melvin has to know if he doesn't make the playoffs this year combined with not having Sheets next year making the playoffs in 2009 difficult it might mean unemployment.
  18. Did you miss the Wayne Franklin trade? The Dan Kolb trade?
  19. Sheets will likely be looking for a deal 2 years shorter at $4m per year less
  20. What exactly do you want to know? Nothing is set until the Elias ratings and teams sign players
  21. Yes they could have and it would have had less of an impact. And the whole two ace thing is really overblown since the variation of one game is so great. This gives you 2-3 games while anyone else would have at best been one game improvement this season. This was to make the playoffs after coming close last year.
  22. Why would you be shocked? One thing I've been mulling over is that if the Brewers make the playoffs the added revenue from the playoffs and next year's attendance would mean being able to sign Sheets. If the Brewers don't make the playoffs, no Sheets next year. In which case making the playoffs becomes very important. It also could mean whether Melvin gets an extension or not. (fixed code --1992)
  23. Ahh, that's our Twelve Million Dollar Man right there!
  24. Trusting Steve Phillips to tie his tie is a great leap of faith. Expecting to get correct information and then relay it correctly is a monumental task.
