  1. The problem is McClung has been godawful. He averages 5.5 BB/9. You can't trust him to give you 3 innings.
  2. Wanting Villanueva in the rotation has nothing to do with releasing Vargas.
  3. No they are not. For example all arby contracts are not, if you release the player before the start of the season you pay a prorated amount. Now usually when players sign a contract without arbitration its guaranteed but Vargas' might not be.
  4. SI's baseball coverage stinks, there is just little to recommend about it.
  5. The only thing I get out of this is they are counting on Narveson. Which seems awfully risky to me.
  6. The Crew can't send him to AAA
  7. So much for not needing to cut payroll. The only reason to release Vargas is to get out from under his salary.
  8. Lots of objections to that. Bush projects just as well as Villanueva. Vargas about 1/2 to 1 run worse.
  9. Lots of things don't jive. Like worrying about stolen bases on a team that could easily lead the national league in home runs. Giving Gwynn 300 PAs. Putting Vargas in the rotation. Hitting your only two left handers back to back to start the season. Hitting Hall ahead of Hart.
  10. Except if they want a regular season game in Japan, this is basically the only time they could do it
  11. I really hope that there are two 8th inning guys, Turnbow and Mota or Turnbow and Tores meaning Turnbow won't be used on zero rest. As for trading Turnbow, he is likely needed for next year as well. The Brewers just can't hope to put together 7 guys around Riske next year from free agents.
  12. Not sure why you would think there would be team highlights. Do you care about European basketball or just how some guy from Wisconsin is doing? Now baseball and MLB is bigger in Japan than that, there is a reason why Nintendo bought the Mariners. Could this have been done better logisitcally? Yep, Selig's MLB is terrible at logistics. See home field for the World Series, the mess the mainpage of mlb.com is, etc.
  13. Can't wait until Vargas only goes 4 innings, McClung comes in at throws a 50 pitch inning and then the bullpen has to cover 4 innings wearing it out!
  14. I doubt Nunez gets added, really no need. They are probably paying him 40 man money already. I only see him getting added if Hardy needs to go on the DL.
  15. Yeah that was stupid of St Louis! Oh wait you thought Glaus was healthy....
  16. Choate is injured, Stetter and Pena are need for next year and McClung won't bring anything.
  17. My problem is that it depends a lot on the situation. If its a man on third two outs, tie game and a single will win it, then Fielder and Gwynn are pretty even. If its no outs, no one on tie game, Fielder and Braun are pretty even.
  18. Escobar doesn't have the bat for anywhere but SS right now. Hardy would be foolish to sign long term to play 2B. Fielder has less service time than Cabrera. How could he even think about turning down a similar contract? One thing people need to keep in mind is that the economy is heading to a recession (which could end up being very severe). The last time there was a recession was the same time baseball salaries stalled.
  19. I have no clue, but that is what the Brewers are doing. Otherwise Villaneuva would be the #4 or #5 from the get go. Vargas would get the long relief slot.
  20. I'm referring to the fact that when Yo comes back Parra would then head to Nashville. Vargas is set at #5 for the season. Yes they have 7 pitchers, but Parra has strict innings limits and that means you need someone else for injury protection. EDIT: Vargas can't go to the pen since McClung will still have the slot unless they hope McClung can go through waivers easier on April 15th.
  21. The Brewers can't showcase Vargas because they have no depth any longer to trade. And showcasing is much less important than winning. And the point is this not 2-4 games. Its the entire season.
  22. Not so sure about that. Keep in mind that Bush and Hill are the same age and while Hill was better last year, Bush was better in 2006. I'd likely take Hill over Bush but people act like Hill has a lot of upside when last year could easily have been a career year at age 27. Bush's FIP in 2007 4.53 Hill's FIP in 2007 4.28
  23. Whoever didn't get in the rotation was always a candidate for long relief. Vargas has done it in the past. Whoever gets the #5 spot will get 28-32 starts depending on the schedule/injuries. Why give those to Vargas over Villaneuva? Villanueva ERA projections range from 3.84 to 4.62 Vargas ERA projections range from 4.71 to 5.10 EDIT:It is possible that McClung finally does figure it out, he won't be the first relief pitcher not to do much until 27. The problem is that it isn't 2005 and you really don't have room for another Turnbow experiment when you are trying to win 85+ games.
  24. Wells is a very streaky player. Overbay hit .240 last year. Unless he fell of a cliff, he should bounce back and hit closer to his average of .280.
  25. It wasn't the starts that bothered me, it was the double switches meaning that Counsell was given ABs instead of just coming in as a defensive replacement
