  1. The dip in velocity is worrisome, but can we stop calling him Suppan? Suppan was a bad signing because he never was a very good pitcher. Here were Suppan's WAR for the 3 years before Milwaukee: 1.3, 1.5, 1.7. Dempster the past three years: 3.2, 2.7, 3.3.
  2. No one has signed a large FA contract yet. It hard to say Hamilton is being left out when there has been no movement by anyone.
  3. 1. Gamel can't play 3B. 2. Green at best is a platoon player. 3. Hamilton wasn't as good as Ramirez last year.
  4. Its because there is no proof Aoki can hit LH pitching well enough to play a corner OF position full time. Add in that the bench currently looks to have Green and Schafer. And there is no reason to expect Maldonado to hit well.
  5. It amazes me how many people are willing to waste another year of Braun's prime. Peralta has control issues Estrada has home run trouble and really can't be counted on to pitch deep in games Rogers stunk in AAA last year until July and is a huge injury risk Fiers doesn't have the stuff to project more than a #4 going forward Thornburg has been seriously questioned if he can hold up as a starter. That is the rotation right now. Yes they could all work out, but there still is a ton of innings to cover and most of them aren't ready to give 180+ innings.
  6. I'm not sure you need one hand to count the number of people here who want Jackson due to his W-L record. Congrats endaround. I had set the over/under for someone deriding my bringing up a W/L record at 2 hours. Remind me again. How many starting pitchers with an under .500 record are in Cooperstown? Kidding aside, of course it's not all that significant, but it's not a small sample and how do you explain away his 4.40 career ERA? His stats say he's a number 3 starter at best and more like a 4. It was also not the main point of my post, which was that his frequent appearences in the postseason have led to the perception that he is better than his actual numbers say he is. The same way I can explain RA Dickey having a career ERA of 4 despite winning the Cy Young. Jackson was a bad pitcher before 2009. But what he did 7 years ago isn't that relevant to what he would do next year. He is his xFIP for the last three years: 3.71, 3.73, 3.79. Those aren't #1 numbers, but those are solid #2 starter numbers.
  7. The problem is that Moore likely doesn't think Francouer is a salary dump but actually worth $6.75m
  8. Fangraphs has him with another 127 PAs in Rookie ball. Why he was in rookie ball after his stint in A- in 2010 where he killed it is strange. And 40 MLB PAs in 2012.
  9. Gomez and Bourn had comparable seasons last year. Bourn's wOBA was .326 and Gomez's was .329. Now obviously they provide value in different ways, but that actually makes Gomez more attractive when he can become a 25-50 or even 30-50 guy with full playing time. But Gomez could also easily crash.
  10. I don't really think how Counsell hit matters. I think the fact that he was known for the most unorthodox batting stance for most of his career does.
  11. He seems to have the normal amount. 310 PAs in 2010 (signed in June) 434 combined PAs in 2011 460 combined PAs in 2012
  12. Based on what? The best prospect Miami received projects as a #3 starter under the best case. They gave up something like 8 wins next year for maybe a cheap few wins in 2 to 3 years. Yes the money evens it out, but to pretend that Miami received some large talent influx is just wrong. And there you have why I made the comment I did. You can't just gloss over the money. Yes you can. Unless the Marlins end up with like a $200 million payroll in 2 years the money can be ignored for making the Marlins competitive. Interantional FAs are capped. Draft picks are capped. All that is left is player salaries.
  13. I'm not sure you need one hand to count the number of people here who want Jackson due to his W-L record.
  14. So where is the David Wright got jobbed thread? WAR Posey 8.0 Braun 7.9 Wright 7.8 Headley 7.5 Molin 6.5 Or really the Jason Heyward got jobbed thread? (though since his value is much more defensive no too surprising)

  16. Reyes was a 4.5 win player last year in a down year. When healthy he's been a 6 win player. He's a great value.
  17. Hamilton is not $20-25 million dollars better than any player on the Brewers he would replace. It just doesn't make sense.
  18. Hart doesn't get you a #2 starter. Hart might get you a guy in AA who projects as a #2. Maybe. This would be like the Brewers saying, hey we could use some bullpen help, lest trade Gallardo for two relievers who have 1 year left on their contracts!
  19. Or maybe some manager will know how to use them. Loe's career splits: vs LHers .302/.365/.473 vs RHers .250/.308/.377 This wasn't Yost deciding, that despite his entire history, Shouse could get RHers out with the entire season on the line, but its up there.
  20. This is the deepest FA starter class in memory. You have Greinke. Then you have a ton of low #1/solid #2 guys. You have in Sanchez and Jackson 2 who are under 30. Then you have Marcum and Haren, #2s or better if healthy. Then you have Dempster and Kuroda who are #2s but have age questions. Now this is a terrible year for position free agents.
  21. Fielder is often among the leaders in WPA. So no, Fielder always tends to deliver the big hit. WPA is much easier to get when you bat in the middle of the order. Much like RBI's. Not really. Because failing in those opportunities leads to negative WPA.
  22. Its really hard to say given the difference in run environments, but it really is fairly close. Jones's age 29 season he had a wRC+ of 161, Braun was 162 last year.
