  1. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the value of different outcomes varied at different levels. nodderman, are you saying your stats support the value of fly balls? Anyway, there's probably some validity to Ned's statement if he's referring to weak outfield flies.
  2. If two OPSs are close, you'll want to consider OBP more heavily. If they're sufficiently far apart, there's no real need to go past OPS, at least when considering overall offensive value. To do a good job with this, especially if you're trying to predict what will happen moving forward, it would probably be a good idea to go back to previous seasons, including minor league seasons if necessary. That'll help with sample issues. Age should factor in at some point, too.
  3. Twice in one night, I think you hit the nail on the head, danzig. The Brewers lack OBP, and that has much to do with the low team walk total. Maybe there's too much fire? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  4. Not living in Milwaukee, I don't get to hear much of Bill Michaels. But I do remember occasions where he'd tell listeners he'd be taking calls, then instead, ended up talking to himself instead.
  5. I hope Mrs. danzig, daughter danzig, and Tyson danzig aren't reading this thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. Some other July 26th birthday notables: Sandra Bullock, Dorothy Hamill, Mick Jagger, Stanley Kubrick, Gracie Allen, Jason Robards, Blake Edwards, Marjorie Lord, Aldous Huxley, Joe Smith (G. S. Warriors), Bubba Wells, Laura Leighton (Melrose Place), Jody Reed (former Brewer), Kevin Spacey, Dorothy Hammill, Roger Taylor (Queen), Mary Jo Kopechne, Hoyt Wilhelm, Vivian Vance, Carl Jung, George Bernard Shaw.
  7. The first names that popped into my mind were Robinson and Ichiro. I see they're ranked 9th and 10th in the link above.
  8. There's a lot of good signature material in the vent thread.
  9. Type A will be down to the top 20% this year. Doug Melvin seems to feel that Scott will qualify. Invader3K, players are divided up by position (outfield is lumped together and I believe 2B, SS, and 3B are lumped together). MLB then applies a 'secret' formula to determine rankings.
  10. "Another Ned apologist emerges. Or perhaps you are Ned......." crosses the condescension/name-calling line.
  11. My stance is pretty close to what jason21nl said a page or so ago. I think starters should be rested once every two to three weeks or so. If a player is slumping, he can be rested more often; that way he'd be somewhat fresher later on when he heats up. As far as Prince, I think he should probably have been rested a little more up to this point. Sitting him vs. a lefty occasionally would be the way to do it. I do object to resting a whole bunch of players at once, though. There has to be a better way.
  12. It looks to me that Ned is 'saving' Estrada for one of the games on Saturday. mikerollins, "according to people around here" and "I'm so glad that nobody around here is in the coaching/managing profession" lean toward the condescension category.
  13. Since the couple of posts about this are tentatively worded, I'll make it clear: when a player is optioned, he has to stay in the minors for 10 days unless an injury during that time opens up a spot. If the Brewers want an outfielder as soon as Monday, it'd have to be someone other than Gwynn or Gross. Gabe will be available in the middle of next week, and Gwynn will be available a few days after that.
  14. I, for one, am glad the Brewers developed more than one farm team.
  15. I believe until a year or two ago, 'guess the attendance' was in the 8th inning.
  16. My take is that the Brewers appropriately concealed the injury to avoid giving an edge to their opponents. After the fan uproar, they felt the advantages to explaining the situation outweighed the benefits of continuing to conceal it. By that point, scouting reports were probably catching up, anyway. As far as the play itself, I was more upset at how the ball was put in play rather than the running. It was an example that pretty much shoots holes into the "just make contact" theory. Working the count and looking for a pitch to hit?or drawing a walk?would have obviously been better. And if Johnny failed via the K, one out would have occurred instead of two. Still, I can't get overly wound because that's that Johnny "is"; it's not like it was totally unexpected. It's unfortunate that his turn came up at that time.
  17. Fantasy is usually in Off Topic, so I'll move it over there. I'll give the thread a more explicative title so it's more noticeable.
  18. Couldn't tell you Jimbo. It's an eBay item up for auction (2 hours left). All the item description says it that it's Bob Skube sliding into Rick Dempsey.
  19. Vs. Righties 1. Weeks 2. Hart 3, Hall 4. Fielder 5. Braun 6. Jenkins 7. Hardy 8. Estrada 9. Pitcher Vs. Lefties 1. Weeks 2. Hart 3. Fielder 4. Braun 5. Hall 6. Mench 7. Hardy 8. Miller Miller would seem to be well-rested while Johnny is hurting, and the lefty-righty platoon would accommodate each player's strength/weakness, anyway. Batting Hall 3rd and Braun 5th vs. righties acknowledges the information discussed in the Braun cleanup thread. Hitting J.J. 7th would have to do with his prolonged drought.
  20. ezBoard slowness again. It just took seven minutes for a message to post.
  21. jaybird? the two biggest germ collectors: shopping cart handles and computer mice. The keyboard must be right up there. Hammer? I can top that. On a summer job, I worked with a guy who 'snorted out' instead of 'snorting in'. He'd put a finger on one nostril, and blow the snot on the grass. Then he'd wash, rinse, repeat with the other one.

  23. Robin, you can only DH for the pitcher in Organized Baseball, but there are other leagues that allow for the DH to hit for anyone. Here's the designated hitter rule. I'll highlight the parts that are applicable to this thread.
  24. I read somewhere that Americans are comfortable with sitting or standing 18 inches from another person. The Japanese need three feet. I'll combine a couple of complaints: loud talking on cell phones. I've got to say that the worst I've ever seen (heard), though, is a group of people who set a speakerphone in the middle of the table in a restaurant. They may as well have brought a boom box. Obnoxious ringtones rank right up there. I admit that my ringtone (Dueling Bangos) is probably obnoxious, too, but at least it starts out quietly. And I tend not to have the ringer turned on in stores or other public places?or I shut it off when it starts to ring and call back later.
  25. Here's the rule: Sorry about the lack of paragraphing. MLB writes that way. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif The explanations from trwi7 and adambr2 are definitely easier to read.
