1. Dante Bichette was traded for Reimer. Seitzer was signed as a free agent, let go as a free agent, then re-signed as a free agent after being released by the Athletics.
2. I think there's a difference between below average base advancement (a legitimate issue) and 'clogging up the base paths', which tends to come up as a somewhat silly sounding argument against the value of getting on base. I can't imaging complaining about having two baserunners instead of one or three baserunners instead of two. But I can see below average advancement as an issue, even if there is only one baserunner. I guess the source of the statement has to be considered, too. Indirectly, this seems to be Dusty's argument defending some of his lineups with low OBP players at the top of the order and fairly impressive OBPs in spots like #7.
3. If I'm the GM of a team that isn't contending, I don't know how motivated I'd be to pick up a marginal guy like Vargas when I could be trying out younger pitchers. And if I'm Doug Melvin, I don't know how motivated I'd be to send him off to a contending team in-season. I think Claudio will be moved, but I also think that it'll happen in the off-season. I don't think stretching out Carlos will be a big issue if or when the time comes to move him to the rotation. In his start this year, he went 77 pitches on two days rest, with 24 pitches in his previous appearance.
4. Relying on memory, my gut feeling, and the points of view that Ennder usually expresses, I'm going to guess that he's generally been a Sheets supporter. It seems to me that he tossed in Sheets' health as one of several reasons he supported the Suppan signing. Note that he also tossed in Cappy's heath; that's something we hadn't discussed very often until his recent injury. Had he written a Sheets-centric rant, I'd have sighed, too. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
5. In no particular order: ? My dad always had ball games going on his transistor radio; I had to see what was up. If it wasn't Milwaukee, it was either of the Chicago teams. Far-away teams on AM in the car at night were a bonus. As a kid, baseball was the first reason for me to pick up a newspaper. ? Summer is my favorite season and baseball is part of it. I don't necessarily know which one is the cart and which one is the horse. But I do know that spring training is a sign that the snow will be melting soon. ? I love the fact that there are 162 games in 180 days. You don't have to 'make an appointment' to see it.
6. If we extend splitter's stats into a large sample, I'd be voting for Braun because he has better numbers in the areas I personally deem more important. However, I think a lot of voters will prefer the stats in which Pence leads. (Granted, it's all pretty close. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif) I'm going to spell out Rookie of the Year in the thread title simply to make this thread easier to find in the forum's Google search. Also, because this looks like something that will be fun to track as the season goes on, I'm going to add this thread to the designated threads list.
7. Thanks for the information, cc. I recall reading something like that in the past; it's nice to have some confirmation.
8. Hall4President, earlier in the season, I'd counter 1982 comparisons by saying the same thing: this year's team probably better parallels the 1978 team. Lately, I've been thinking that 1987 (Team Streak) is the better comparison.
9. Since it would have 'major league' interest, I retitled that thread and moved it over here.
10. I have to nitpick that verbiage because the Brewers are contenders right now. I'll also nitpick and say Frankie may or may not be here. Backupcatchers makes lots of good points. Like most, I think this team is set up to be good for several years, and may continue beyond that if management keeps building properly. But there can always be unexpected bumps in the road, and you have to expect other teams to improve. But if there is a disappointing year, I'd say the Brewers are built to bounce back like the Indians have this year. Chio151, using a very rough estimate, Yo and Villanueva should be good for 210 or so innings next year.
11. I think this is a good fit for this thread: Why are we so much better at home than on the road? This is a great post. Feel free to copy and paste it to that thread.
12. I'm with hurricane on this one; I don't think it matters much. Without the benefit of the article, I'm not necessarily going to assume this means Ned thinks Jeff is his second best pitcher. (I don't have RSS set up right now and mlb.com home pages aren't practical to load on dial-up.) As a reminder, we have several discussions going to discuss the 'virtues' of the individual pitchers: Gallardo is Better Than Bush/Vargas (in the designated thread list) Was Suppan the wrong choice? Capuano: One year wonder?
13. Duh... I looked at the link; forum members are participating in the threads.
14. Cool. I'll update the thread title.
15. I don't think it's always a mndset that average is good enough. In my case, I'm often anal about giving up a guy via DFA when a potential injury could put the team in a pickle as soon as a few days later.
16. Ben threw 14 pitches last night. Does that make it 'safe' for him to pitch on Friday?
17. I think Ichiro does know English to a degree. His body language seemed to indicate that he understood the questions?at least somewhat. But as crewcrazy suggests, I'd have to think he'd be afraid of saying the wrong thing on camera in front of a world-wide audience. Heck, I was in a Mexican restaurant about a year ago. We were having a good time, drinking a few beers and speaking Spanish. The waiter came out with my food and told me my plate was hot. I intended to say, "Don't worry." (No tienes miedo.) Instead, I said something I can't post here. (No tienes something else.) Oh, yeah? gotta say it. Menotti80, Brewerfan asks members not to use AOL-speak (e.g. "u" instead of "you"). Thanks.
18. I guess I did watch the Days of Our Lives premiere episode when it was rerun on the show's 40th anniversary. Can't say I benefited from it, but it was kind of interesting to see how soaps were done way back when. I'd shamelessly watch Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman if they started rerunning it again. Highlights include: The Fernwood Flasher The guy who drowned in Mary's chicken soup An aluminum Christmas tree impalement (Martin Mull) A bathtub electrocution (a TV fell in, killing the son of Dabney Coleman's character; Dabney then went on a crusade about the evils of television) A reproductive organ transplant from a dog A parody of star Louise Lasser's real-life arrest A mass murder of a neighborhood family, including the family's goats and chickens; everyone was appalled that someone would kill those goats and chickens Important issues surrounding the waxy yellow buildup on Mary's kitchen floor Lots of product placement for Schlitz beer Author Gore Vidal (as himself) playing a potential love interest for Mary Mary's nationally televised nervous breakdown on the David Susskind showhttp://www.heartstorming.com/images/mhmh2.jpg
19. Does the forum allow replies to the threads, or is the original poster the only one to post?
20. Dial-up. It took 11 minutes for them to load. I wanted to make sure everything was the right size so I wouldn't mess them up. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif EDIT: To see the full-sized images, right-click and choose View Image or your browser's equivalent.
21. No sweat. I'll take care of it for you. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
22. I believe the plan is to set the rotation after Ned and Mike find out how Sheets is used tonight.
23. I have no clue when the game will start, but I was just going to ask what we might miss because of Homer Simpson or weird FOX stuff. I guess I'll excuse Homer, though, since Prince was in his bit.
24. Unpretty lineups: American League Ichiro Suzuki CF Derek Jeter SS David Ortiz 1B Alex Rodriguez 3B Vladimir Guerrero RF Magglio Ordonez LF Ivan Rodriguez C Placido Polanco 2B Dan Haren P National League Jose Reyes SS Barry Bonds LF Carlos Beltran CF Ken Griffey Jr. RF David Wright 3B Prince Fielder 1B Russell Martin C Chase Utley 2B Jake Peavy P
25. I just started one. Nothing fancy. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
