  1. He'd have to go through optional assignment waivers. But those waivers are revocable. I don't think there'd be much motivation for anyone to make a claim.
  2. Alex wore plain blue socks yesterday. I'd assume that people gave him the business when he wore the white ones.
  3. This is funny. Security has deemed fan interference and removed the spectator before the review is over.
  4. I think the important thing is to improve the overall talent level of the organization with contracts that can be controlled. Whether this talent is added at the rookie level, the Major League level, or in between is largely irrelevant as long as the team isn't giving up prospects to acquire veterans. Acquiring young players is important too, but guys like Chase Anderson and Junior Guerra are reasonable exceptions. Chase is still reasonably young, but he's controlled for a bunch of years. Guerra was picked up for nothing. In both of their cases, age works to the team's advantage because innings limits aren't a concern. Down the road, trades can focus more on the Major League level. But trading prospects for veterans should still be done on a limited basis, especially if the veterans are rentals. And a competitive team shouldn't stop Stearns from continuing to acquire prospects. Having prospects in the pipeline on a continual basis should hopefully avoid the need to tear down and rebuild in the future.
  5. Just to add on, watch for Alex Presley. The look of his hosiery on Friday didn't work for me at all. It looked like compression stockings with a blue vertical stripe.
  6. I'm liking the blue better than I thought I would. As I mentioned in Friday's thread, the players like the look, but they say that functionality is lacking. Putting this color scheme on uniforms that were made of comfortable material, had buttons on the jerseys, and had a belt would work for me.
  7. Based on Stearns' statements over the last few months, I think the "timing and extent" of the rebuild are under constant evaluation and reevaluation. On several occasions, he's said that there is no timetable. I think the only trades that aren't appropriate right now would be prospects for veterans. Veterans for prospects, prospects for prospects, or veterans for veterans would all seem appropriate. interestingly, in this case, the Brewers took on the older player with less control. But each player is performing well, and it's easy to envision this deal turning out to be a win for both teams.

  9. There's no ticker at the bottom of the screen on the telecast today. It's so much nicer that way.
  10. Here are his May numbers: .278/.301/.407 They're not awfully far from his career numbers: .270/.305/.371
  11. Adam McCalvy wrote "There is a chance Barnes' stay will be short. Another reliever, Corey Knebel, should be ready to return from the disabled list early next week." I wouldn't be surprised if Jacob has to be sent down to accommodate someone else, simply because his option situation would allow for it. He sure was impressive tonight, though.

  13. Yeah, Santana throwing out Herrera at home was great. Telly surveyed the players on the uniforms. They were fine with the look, but they don't like how they're made. They specifically mentioned that they were too hot. When double-knits were dropped, players were really happy to go back to a button front, a real belt, and a natural fabric.
  14. Yep. They're the 1976 double-knits with the block M on the cap.
  15. Here's the answer. Going all in: Smith debuts with clutch relief
  16. Wow this probably deserves it's own thread I think a new thread is in order. Best wishes to Donny's family. The passing of of 30th round pick Charlie Donovan in November makes this especially sad.

  18. Ryan Howard has been benched to "clear his head." As Davey Nelson put it, he's "struggling like a duck in a desert."
  19. Optional assignment waivers are irrevocable. We don't hear about this type of waivers often because it's unusual that a team needs to consider optioning a player with three-plus years of experience. Trade waivers can be revoked. But they only come into play during the waiver period that begins in August. They're not necessary the rest of the year because players can be traded without waivers.
  20. Wily can't refuse an optional assignment. That won't happen until he reaches five years of service. But to be optioned, he'd have to clear waivers. Waivers are required to option players after the third anniversary of their first MLB callup.
  21. You may as well add Chase Anderson to the list of players who could be displaced. Also, consider the possibility that a starter could be moved to the bullpen. It's gotten interesting now because you could argue that nobody clearly deserves a demotion at this point. That's definitely a change from a month ago. An issue to be considered is that while Peralta has options, he's reached a point in his career where he'd have to clear waivers to be sent down.
