  1. Back to back playoff appearances, by my count. I bolded the key word for you..POTENTIAL. How about replacing the proven talent that left(Pom, Moose, Grandal) with equal or better talent?? Listen...yes, it's ONLY December 4th, as so many here want to keep saying...however the big difference this year is they have what, 10 players to replace?? 10!! Not just one or two...10! The longer they wait, the more talent comes off the board, and what are they left with?? Bargains..dart throw bargains, that everyone here seems to love so much. I wouldn't be worried if they only had one or two players to replace, but that's not the case. Are they doing anything in the background, at all?? or are they "waiting" for players to go "on sale"??
  2. viewtopic.php?f=63&t=39276 ICYMI. Point being, I'm certain they're working on stuff. Like what?? They are sitting on all this cash(that supposedly everyone here thinks they will spend and NOT cut payroll, even though there has been several reports they are), and who are they going to spend it on?? Who out there is worth it, that's left?? Strasburg, Cole, Rendon, none of them are coming here, after that, it seems most would be happy with what are basically dart throws(like Chacin was) to fix the pitching staff and other "bargains" that may or may not work out for a year to replace the two all stars that left the Brewers lineup with GAPING holes in it. They will sign someone like Dallas Kuechel and everyone will rejoice that they got a TOR arm...except all he really is is a "dart throw" as well. Hope he has a good year or two. I see threads about Dominic Smith being the 1B of the future and how excited people are at that possibility...really?? In order for the Brewers to not take a step back(or improve) from last year they need to replace the two all star bats that walked out the door, with equal too or better all star bats. The pitching staff NEEDS improvement...re signing Jordan Lyles and signing someone like Kuechel may help a little, but it's still not much different than last year. The names might be, but the talent equivalency won't be much different. To date, the Brewers have been rumored with exactly ZERO players...they weren't in on Wheeler, they aren't in on Starsburg or Cole or rendon, which means there will be NO major headliner signings coming. So one can safely assume they ARE cutting payroll, even though so many here scoff at the notion that "several executives" would be privvy to the Brewers financial/payroll plans for this year, only we have message board fans that are INSISTENT that's false(that they are cutting payroll) as if they are privvy to the Brewers plans. Now I ask you who is more likely to know what they are doing?? Other people involved in baseball or posters on Brewerfan.net?? Again, they are sitting on at least 40-50 million +(to match last years payroll), so if they aren't cutting payroll, who are they spending it on?? Because it's pretty obvious DS is doing his Christmas(free agent) shopping at Walmart(low prices) this year. You almost always get what you pay for, when you shop at Walmart...you might get lucky once in awhile, but more often then not...price=quality.
  3. Since the other thread was locked and no one seems to believe me...or wants to.. Bob Nightengale @BNightengale · 32m The #Brewers will undoubtedly have a smaller payroll this year, which several rival executives acknowledged during GM meetings https://twitter.com/haudricourt/st
  4. This isn't NOT true...however this year is a bit different in that they need so many players now...you can't wait until right before spring training to fill 12 spots for example. What you say above is fine if you only really need one or two players to fill out your roster(or just depth pieces)...However this year the Brewers need a starting catcher, at least one TOR arm and also another starter, a 1B, a competent SS, a 3B, a couple of bullpen arms at minimum. That's a lot of positions to fill and isn't it reasonable to assume that the longer you wait, the less likely it is you get your top targets at those particular spots. Don't "settle" be aggressive, go get the guys you want and get it done.
  5. So they are cutting payroll then, right?? Cutting payroll, is cutting payroll. Instead in Yelich's prime you should be increasing it substantially. Payroll is fluid every year, it isn't linear. You don't automatically just increase payroll every year. That's just spending for the sake of spending. You spend when the right deals present itself like with Moose and Grandal last year and manage your resources wisely so that you can afford to make those deals when you need to. What if no right deals present themselves? They can't depend on luck every year. Sometimes you have to make your luck. The Brewers drew 1.1 million more fans than the Reds did last year. Shrinking payroll is an insult to the fans. Bingo! He who hesitates finishes last. He nailed it, you can't always depend on the "right deal" falling in your lap and if it doesn't just shrug your shoulders and move on to the nexxt cheap option. How about being agressive once in awhile, and as Briggs says, making your own luck??
  6. Wow, you are piling up the hot takes tonight. BS it's not...most of you are all about getting cheap undervalued players that MIGHT produce. Take a look at the non tender thread...a lot are saying they are okay with bringing Arcia back at 1 year for 2.2 million. The guy is trash, he can't hit a lick. But, since he was "cheap" a lot of people are okay with it. Prime example...once you see what Moose and Grandal signed for, all of a sudden no one wanted them back because they thought the contracts were too rich. But prior to that those same people wanted them back. Okay...so, who can you get for less that will produce as much or more then either of them?? You can get guys, but unless it's a complete flukey year, I can almost guarantee you won't get the same or better production for significantly less. But that's okay with a lot of you, because at least they didn't over pay. The one year deals have got to stop...at some point you have to have a "core" and a core of all young players with potential isn't going to cut it. It's fine to have some, but you also have to have a corp of veterans that will all be together for awhile too.
  7. LOl what else do you expect him to say?? he's not going to come out and fully admit they are cutting payroll...they can just not sign FA's and give the standard "we tried"(like they did with Grandal line) and some of you incredibly guillable, DS slobbering fans would believe it. I don't get it. Were you all Ted Thompson fans too?? Where did his being frugal leave the franchise?? Besides what does DS define as being "competitive"?? Competing for a playoff berth, world series, just not being terrible?? Now you’re just trolling. You get it straight from the man himself to not panic and yet, here you are using Bob N. to try to make a case for Stearns not doing his job. Time to put your big boy pants on and relax a bit and let the off season play out. It's the exact same thing as the last offseason. And the last trade deadline. And the ones before that. Right down to the Ted Thompson comparison. Soon we'll have the reminiscing about Doug Melvin, the "scared money don't make money", and multiple posts about how every prospect should be traded because he's too ambitious to sit on his hands like Stearns, no prospect is guaranteed, and how the competitive window is over because we didn't sign X player. You're exactly right, because if your honest, what of those things AREN'T true?? You may not like them, or want to hear them, or want to acknowledge how factual those things are, but they are. So for all of you saying..."there's a lot of off season left yet, relax"...sure there is, but why does he have to wait all off season?? He could be signing guys now just as easily right?? Orrrrr maybe he waits purposely, thinking prices will come down, and then he can get players at "walmart prices". That is EXACTLY why they wait, and in the process, because they are waiting to get players at "their" price, other players that would be coups they maybe could have by spending a bit more, are signing other places. They wait for bargains, plain and simple. No one can spin it any other way. Just because they are a bargain, doesn't mean they will be a substantial help to the ball club, right??
  8. To a lot of you it won't matter who they sign, as long as they get them cheap or at a "reasonable" price, it will be a good deal and will help the team, right?? SMH...the #1 thing I have never been able to figure out with sports fans, is why they care so much how someone else spends THEIR own money. You guys would think bringing in Logan Forsythe to play 1st for a year and Todd Frazier to play 3rd for a year would actually be good moves if they were cheap 1 year deals, only they wouldn't really replace any of what they are losing. But, hey, if it's a bargain, must be a good move, right?? Has no one ever heard of getting what you pay for??
  9. So they are cutting payroll then, right?? Cutting payroll, is cutting payroll. Instead in Yelich's prime you should be increasing it substantially.
  10. Step away from the keyboard...
  11. Uh yeah .... I know you personally want to believe this, but Nightengale is a horrible source. Finding a bum to support your thoughts is not evidence. Hey, actions speak louder than words...until DS starts proving this not to be the case, I think it's fair to draw that conclusion, isn't it?? All the players have left, and so far, only minimal coming in and sitting on boatloads of $$ they just freed up.
  12. This pretty much confirms it.. Bob Nightengale @BNightengale · 1m The Milwaukee #Brewers, who are planning to cut payroll, led all #MLB with five non-tenders, followed by the #SFGiants and #Royals.
  13. Not that i was necessarily in favor of it, but the ONLY way you don't tender Shaw with Moose being gone is if you pretty much have a "locked in" plan already for 3B, right?? You can't non tender Shaw under the circumstances and hope "so and so takes our offer". To me you would already HAVE to know what you're doing.
  14. As well as Claudio, Nelson, Saladino, Guerra
  15. Yuck....they couldn't have found a better hitting SS/Utility INF in FA for about the same amount of $$??
  16. It's not that nobody "minds." Would love to have them all back, hate to see them go. If only there wasn't this darn problem called competition. I'm glad Stearns passed, none of those contracts would have been wise for the Brewers. Season doesn't start tomorrow, R-E-L-A-X. Hot stove league is just warming up. But fair warning, Stearns may not do something HUUUUGE. It may be a few deals that as a whole makes the roster better. 88 HR's and 225 RBI's just walked out that door..Thames, Grandal and Moose...and unless you find equal to or better production from an equal # of players that you bring in...the roster will almost assuredly not be as good. Where are you going to find that with three players?? This is where people chime in with "well, Urias will be better than Arcia, so that's some of it, if Cain rebounds that will help, and if Shaw comes back and can be Travis Shaw". Sure...that would be great if that happened, but the flaw in that is...that's a lot of IF's(not the known, proven production that left), and if they all were better, they could still be better ON TOP of having the production Moose, Grandal and Thames, and the team would be even better then, and also not necessarily HAVE to rely on their production like they might have to now right?? Unless Anthony Rendon and Nick Castellanos are walking through that door, or some absolutely grand slam highway robbery trade happens that DS pulls off, it will be essentially impossible to replace those #'s with 3 available FA's...UNLESS they happen to catch lightening in a bottle from a guy or two. Don't think you want to have to rely on that as a sound strategy.
  17. Here we go. You may want to follow one of the top 8markets in baseball. Not one in the bottom 5. The Bucks are a small market...they spent a crap ton of cash in the off season...the Packers are a small market...they spent a crap ton of $$ in the off season. That's a crutch that owners of "small market" teams lean on and fans buy into sadly. You are only a "small market" if you act like a small market.
  18. I love how no one here seems to mind that the Brewers have now lost Grandal, Moose and Pomeranz this off season so far. Now there is a HUGE hole in this Brewers lineup to protect Yelich and no one seems alarmed?? How on earth are they going to replace Moose and Grandal's bats with at least equal to or better production than they gave?? No one year stop gaps. That isn't going to cut it. Sure, that's what Moose and Grandal essentially were, but they also had the chance to re sign either one(or both) and didn't. Stearns has a crap ton of $$ at his disposal...he had better pull of something HUGE, and I mean HUGE to salvage this off season and so the crew doesn't take a step back. Watch the Brewers end up with some schlub like Todd Frazier to play third and someone like Logan Forsythe to play 1st. Like that would replace Moose and Grandal's production...yeah right. And that will do nothing to fill the catching hole either. I hope like hell DS has a plan, because as of right now, it's not looking too good.
  19. I'm vehemently against it as well, unless the haul is MASSIVE and i mean MASSIVE with major league ready players and IF and only if the Brewers use the extra money for some MAJOR free agents.
  20. Basically stats the Brewers are open to dealing Hader, that it would be disastrous if Hader fell off. Specifically watch out for the Mets Sure, for DeGrom
  21. I don't have a subscription but here is the lead in... In their never-ending quest for payroll efficiency, low-revenue teams often entertain ideas that, on the surface, appear to make little sense. Trading Josh Hader would be precisely that type of counterintuitive move for the Brewers, yet the left-handed reliever is indeed available, according to major-league sources. “We listen on a wide variety of players throughout the offseason. A lot of players get discussed,” Brewers general manager David Stearns said, while adhering to his policy of refusing to comment on specific players in trade conversations. Why would the Brewers even consider moving Hader, who has won the Trevor Hoffman Award as the best reliever in the National League in each of the past two seasons and is still only 25? Follow the money. And Hader’s trade value, too. Hader, who had enough service time as a two-year player to qualify for an extra round of salary arbitration, is projected by MLB Trade Rumors to...
  22. Can you ever stop ********? Look Stearns made a move. It improves the team going forward. But here you are shutting it down Nov 27th because it doesnt fill your top priority. Every single offseason for 3?years now Stearns cant live up to your Madden NFL Trade Skills. How did Darvish do? Arrieta? Who else? Your complaints like 3dozen others to have made the comment, Replacing Grandal, improve Starting Pitching, Find a 1b better than any that exists currently. Is Noted. For the thousandth time. Your speaking to a large crowd here that knows not only Baseball but likely more about the Brewers' needs than you do. Just go Meh from here on out when every move you have problem with Because it isnt your #1 priority. This addresses easily, what should be 2 of the top 5 in priorities. I dont think Arcia is #1 at SS now after this. He's the hybrid 2b/SS even 3b backup now. Lauer gives the Brewers a LH SP that has been missing and lamented for numerous times now. Basically swapped 1st rd picks and somehow got a promising SS for a #4 type of starter at best. What the hell is your problem?? what in my post was saying I didn't like the trade?? I also said it's early yet and let's see what the rest of the off season brings. If you don't think they don't need an equivalent or better upgrade to Grandal's bat, or a top of the rotation arm, then you obviously DON'T know baseball or what the brewers needs are. There is still time to get those things. I said that. That being said, I do believe in some aspects in a market like Milwaukee, if you have free agent pursuits, your BEST avenue to get who you want is to bid early, stay aggressive with that player(players), DON'T go cheap and hope that said player(s) is willing to take your early offer for fear of getting less if he waits or not as much security. To me, the longer you wait, the MORE chance there is, it becomes a bidding war, which you simply won't win. It's the old, early bird gets the worm theory. You may not need to utilize this strategy if you aren't pursuing big time guys, but IF(and we have no way of knowing) you are pursuing a Rendon or Cole, or Wheeler, that everyone else is waiting out..get in early and hope it works.
  23. Davies frustrated the crap out of me...nibble, nibble, nibble(go to 3-0), then groove a fast(if you can call it that)ball and get tattooed. If he didn't have his control, he was useless, and that happened way too much...especially down the stretch this last year. I'm not sad to see him go, at all. Are you sure that you read DAVIES on the back of the pitcher you were watching? Because this really isn't true at all. You didn't like Davies because he didn't throw 98 MPH heat. Just admit it. That is some of it, only because if you throw that hard and can miss bats, it's much easier to get out of your own jams. He didn't have that option. How soon we all forget that glorious day he had at Miller park against the Cubs this year. he had 3 good months...April, May and September. In June, July and August his ERA's were..5.40, 4.67 and 5.09 including back to back starts in July against the Cubs and Reds where he gave up 13 earned runs. His K/9 was a paltry 5.7...if he were Greg Maddux fine, but he simply wasn't, and most of his Brewers career he was their #2 or #3 guy?? No thanks...time to move on. bring in a guy that can actually miss bats to take his spot.
  24. I'd love to have him back...his power at the middle infield positions would be a welcome addition after losing Grandal's bat.
  25. Davies frustrated the crap out of me...nibble, nibble, nibble(go to 3-0), then groove a fast(if you can call it that)ball and get tattooed.
