Sad to see a HOFer like Glavine go through this towards the end, but he isnt the first and definately won't be the last. Per cbssports.com, Tommy Hanson will be making his debut on Saturday in Atlanta against the Crew. He is my favorite non-Brewers prospect, so that will be fun to watch. A few pitching debuts against the Brewers in recent memory that stand out to me are, of course, Anthony Swarzak a few weeks ago, Zack Duke, and Anthony Reyes. Any other 1st career starts against the crew that stand out to anybody?

One incident that stood out to me was actually at the Monday Brewers/Pirates game a few weeks ago. I was in the left field bleachers. Of course there is that one single cubs fan wearing his Aramis jersey. The kid was in the 16-18 range, with 3 other young brewer fans with him. He clearly wore the jersey for attention. No one seemed to notice until the 4th inning. A "f*** the cubbies" chant got going. In the 5th ining, the kid picked up the name "Steve", since he resembled a younger version of Bartman. From that point, 5 minutes could not go by without a random brewer fan, sometimes from a section over, standing up and yelling a comment at the kid followed by a loud cheer form the crowd and a "f you, steve" or "f the cubs" chant. The comments yelled were not limited to the Cubs. Many of them personal (personal appearance, etc.) . One guy actually forced "Steve" to sit down every down he walked by to get a new beer. In the 8th, our usher who was in his early 20's, forced the cubs fan to leave for his safety. He was brought back about 5 minutes later by an older usher who gained soe control, then laid into "Steve" for provoking the crowd, which he was slightly. My roomate, who is a cardinals fan 1st, brewers distant 2nd, thought Steve was stupid for wearing his jersey. Part of me enjoyed it, but overall i was embarassed as a Brewer fan.

I am 100% with sbrylski in that this move, to me, felt like it would definately happen at some point in time. Lately, consensus seems to have been that Brad Nelson would be claimed if put through waivers. What does everyone think the odds are with Brads slow start (given the small sample) that maybe he passes through? Does the timing of putting him through in mid-may as oppsed to early april increase the chance he goes unclaimed? Of course, he still would have to accept the assignment, to my understanding.

I am with Diskono. Why waste years on a project that is as totally hopeless and pointless as Yo being a good SP. Billy Wagner was a natural righty who tought himself to throw lefty after a few broken arms. After last night, it seems the one possible scenario left for Yo to contribute this year seems to be to tell him to throw lefty and move him to the pen. I had to edit in the blue on the off-chance people might take it as a serious post.

Unless we have been Tejadaed, I dont think the 6/8/66 is correct for Angel Salomes DOB. Yea, If you add Gillespie and maybe Cain and/or Jeffress a little later in the year, this could be one of the most exciting AAA teams for the Brewers in a while.

I am with liveforoctober in that I love the innings pitched from last year (assuming it can be repeated, of course). If he gives close to 200 again, the deal seems like it will payoff. Does anyone here have any knowledge on the history of relievers-turned-starters and some dort of track record of their durability? Derek Lowe comes to mind. His durability has been outstanding since making the switch, though he made the switch at a much younger age (27ish).

It seems like Abreu will likely settle for around 5 mil, maybe somewhere between 3 and 4mil. Without a trade of Corey Hart, I would think he would take less money to play somewhere else with more solid AB's available. If he gets 250 AB's in Milwaukee at 4.5 million, he would most likely rather have 500 AB's somewhere else at 3.5 million because next off-season, that amount could easily be made up. I am not saying he would only get 250 AB's here, but playing time and building next years value seems almost as important as his 09 base salary at this point.

Nate, I am not sure I totally understand the point yet. Let me know if I am on the right track. Maybe a comparison of me having a brand new BMW that I make monthly payments on monthly. It doesnt cost me anything (besides gas) to go out and take a ride in my car, so each ride is "free", despite my payment still being made every month. I think calling all ticket sales "100% profit" is still a little misleading.

I was not implying that those teams do make large profits right now, but rather that they would with the 50% revenue sharing. The Marlins and Royals averaged around 17,000 and 20,000 respectively last year, which I think is more than enough to turn a profit with that much shared. Granted, this is my simple reason and I don't know much on the matter as far as specific numbers. My point was simply that the higher percent that gets shared, the less the small market teams have to do to make money.
  10. Kricket755
The 50% revenue sharing sounds great, and if every owner in baseball cared as much about winning as they do about profit, it would help the competitive balance greatly. I don't think this is the case. I think the problem comes in where teams like the Marlins or Royals would be able to sit on a 40 million dollar payroll, and turn a ridiculous profit. Not to mention the fact that with only 50% of their profits instead of 70% for the major markets, the amount that was needed to be spent for the small markets to compete would go down. Again, while in theory, that is the goal, but in reality I see some teams taking the shared profit and being complacent. Of course, this could be somewhat taken care of with some type of minimum number for annual payroll.

Chorizo mentions that no player who has seen any part of major league action is considered for this list. If I understand correctly, that would mean Escobar, Gamel, and Salome are all not in the equation due to time spent in Milwaukee last September. I would have to think all 3 would be "impact players" if they were part of it. I find the fact that the system is ranked 13 minus the consideration of those 3 to be extremely impressive.

I found it interesting that Caleb Gindl falls out of their top 10 list for Brewers prospects. It isn't surprising, but interesting considering they valued his rookie ball performance last year enough to put him ahead of a guy like Lucroy who is also from the '07 class. I am sure it has much more to do with others climbing past him as opposed to him falling, which is encouraging. After such a solid season for a 19 year old in A-ball and a respectable stint in Hawaii, it is interesting. Maybe they found a new flaw in his game, seeing as the only knock seems to be his height. Or maybe BA just found out Caleb is only 5'9"?
  15. Kricket755
Hopefully that elbow scares off teams just enough for us to bring him back for another year. If he does accept arbitration, what are the odds the Brewers negotiate/sign him to an extension during the 09 season? Is it above 0%?

As I suggested about a month ago, I would love to pay Dunn (4 years and $44 million) to be a back-up/platoon this year and a full-time player in 2010. I would be absolutely thrilled if the Brewers could pull off a 4yr/44 mil deal with Dunn, but I would still take him at a 4yr/ 56 mil dollar deal in a heartbeat. This guy is as consistent as it gets. Consistently low avg and high K's, but he has hit at least 40 HR's every year over the last 5 years on top of consistently being on base at +.380 clip. On top of that, he doesn't miss games (no more than 10 missed in a season over last 5), he is a lefty bat, and his ability to play first gives the club that much more flexibility in trading Prince, if and when that time arrives over the next 2 years. I would prefer to deal Cameron and take my lumps with Corey in center. IMO, If Dunn can be had for 4 years, the Brewers will make room for him as oppsed to having him in a backup/platoon type role.

The 4 players rumored to be available as the PTBNL candidates for the Indians are all top 10 players in the Brewers system on the new P50 (Lucroy-5, Green-7, Brantley-8, Cain-9). General consensus seems to be, with all due respect, we would love for Cain to be the one to go. My question is there that big of a dropoff in prospect quality between 8 and 9? Or is the type of player Cain is (high ceiling, still somewhat raw) just more expendable than Brantley (high OBP, excellent strike zone judgment), Green (infielder with polished lefty stick), and Lucroy (catcher with solid stick as well as behind the plate) for the Brewers and the type of player that we need to add to the current lineup?

Seeing as Penny is the top starter listed on the type B, maybe I shouldn't have spoke so soon on his inability to move up. Theoretically, he can move up to type A with a few bad/below average permformances by one of the guys directly ahead of him, correct?

Another interesting name I noticed on the list was Brad Penny. He is currently listed as a type B. Obviously, anyone with a shoulder problems in the throwing shoulder is a huge risk. But the 2007 numbers were good and maybe the injury lowered his asking price into a neighborhood the Brewers feel a risk is worth taking. Any ideas on what kind of a deal he gets this off-season?

Long-time reader, seldom poster here. Due to computer problems I have had, I havent checked this website in over a week, which is a streak significantly longer than any other I have had in the last 2 years. I finally accessed my roomates computer to check it and I stumbled upon this thread. My roomate happens to be a die-hard Cardinals fan and I am definately torn as to which one of these photos to select for his new background on his computer. Bottomline is I want to let everyone out there who contributes to this thread and others like it that I appreciate it and it makes living in the same house as a Cardinals fan just a lit bit easier. P.S. I went with the La Russa "used Torres two days" photo as the new background.

As a long-time, multiple-times-a-day reader of Brewerfan.net, I am excited at the discussion of a feature like this. As one who can't go to sleep at night without checking the boxscores of all the Brewers minor league teams, I feel like I have a decent understanding of the players in the system. But I know I have 2 brothers and multiple friends who don't take the time to follow it as close but would love a feature where one or a few players could be followed individually a little outside of the boxscores. Some points I think might add to this feature are maybe detailed statistics of a player's recent performance (last 7 days, last 30 days, things that aren't readily available for prospects) and also an increased effort to listen to audio of your players games (if available) to possibly give some sort of fact, stat, or tidbit that one wouldn't know otherwise. Sorry for the post being long and wordy, but this first post is a pretty big moment in my life. And I am only half-joking.
