  1. There's that Vin Scully nugget, no catcher has ever led the league in doubles. Lucroy now 1 up on Goldschmidt who is out with 40, and Freddie Freeman is next up in the NL with only 35. Not an insurmountable lead, but seems like he has a good chance.
  2. I don't think the pitching is a log jam, more like enough of the right kind of depth. Too many teams have to chase a starter in trade when someone goes down, with Fiers and Jungman as #6 and #7 we have some very workable options there. Maybe enough to make a trade if something compelling comes along. Guys like Pena, Burgos, Hellweg can be in the Spring mix for reliever spots along with whatever else Doug can find in the bargain bin. No sense in paying a ton. That set-up in my mind makes a solid argument for taking a swing at Rollins as a nice shot in the arm for the offense right now, and a hedge on Segura for next year.
  3. I'm fairly stoked living out of state I don't get to many games in person, but I am in Appleton dropping my son off at college so I'm going to Friday nights game!
  4. Rivera's Huntsville numbers so far are so much better than anything he has done before that I'm trying to stay tempered in my expectations, but he has certainly done himself a ton of good in the rankings the last month+, and I hope he keeps it up.
  5. 1. Pace of games, including streamlining replay with more training and hire more guys to look at every play and call for a pause if needed. 2. Incrementally work on revenue sharing though Bud's move to snag all of the online rights years ago really helped level this one out compared to the 90's. 3. trade higher costs with better minor league pay and retirement rules for an extra-long labor deal. 4. Start talking up how low the concussion rate is compared to football, among other strategies for growing the game. 5. Resist urges to change the game, expand playoffs and other such things.
  6. I don't think people are surprised to see guys overpaid at the end of these deals, what stands out for me is the number of them where you aren't just looking at 1 or 2 ick years at the end, but 3 or more years of pure wasted money. Pujols atleast is producing some value, but the drop-off from All-world to OK regular or worse. Same with Prince, him not aging well isn't a major shock but I still figured he had more in the tank. It used to just be the pitchers that this would happen too.
  7. I've noticed that Johnny Davis' walk rate has been creeping up, and he is getting close to 1BB/ 10 ABs. Definitely nice to see some development from him over the course of the season, he still has a long way to go but I take improvement as a good sign. Its somewhat dangerous to get to excited about guys on a hot streak, but Rogers has definitively demonstrated himself to be a better prospect than Morris, walks more, hits for a better average and has done more at AAA. I kind of had them even coming into the season because Rogers had always been a little on the old side, but he just keeps getting the job done. I hope he has a good September. Rivera has suddenly made himself interesting. I want to see more, but its nice to think there might be another option if Segura can't get it figured out again.
  8. I love this thread.
  9. Yadi 3-5 with a triple and a HR and Rogers (5 RBIs through 2 innings) with big days today.
  10. The Brewers have been cautious in the past with call-ups. Wooten is definite as would Schafer and Weisenburg (even if he doesn't play it is smart to let your 3rd catcher for next year get familiar with the pitchers), after that I think it is hard to say. Morris maybe if he can show something the next couple of weeks. I'd like to see Rogers rewarded after a solid season. I'd think Gindl is pretty likely as well since he has been up.
  11. I think Nelson decided to save all of his minor league hits for when they'd count. 4 years of pro-ball without a hit and now a 3 game streak.
  12. While one can certainly play mix and match assumptions, Outlander is undoubtedly correct that if you truly go back and rewind the tape different choices will be made outside of the trades. Keep in mind that while Cain is performing nicely this year that is his 3rd year and his you have to live through some OK to completely unspiring seasons of offense. Escobar in 3000 PA has a career OPS of .644, with essentially no significant improvement. And with Brantley the Indians had to wait through close to 4 years of low .700 OPS' out of a LF, before he exploded this year. It is not just a matter of those prior playoff appearances, I'm not convinced the Brewers or a lot of teams would have still been trotting Brantely and Escobar out at this point. They aren't bad players, but its not like they have created obvious surplus value.
  13. I wonder if they might not improve a bit if some of the AZL guys made the team. I wouldn't normally think that would make a difference, but all 3 of our top draft picks started with the Arizona team. Sure they've been kind of uneven so far, but there is still instructionals and spring training.
  14. I want to be somewhat patient with Segura, but he has been in an offensive funk for over a year and nothing about the personal stuff in his life screams to me that he is going to turn it around. Rollins decline has been fairly modest overall, so while he might decline a little I wouldn't expect him to fall off a cliff in the next year or so. Their difference in WAR is large enough that Rollins would be worth almost a full win the rest of the season, which is pretty huge at this point in the season. Couple that with an uninspiring list of other plausible ideas at this point..
  15. I'm inclined to agree, though I do not take any issue with how they handled this year. His bat has always been the ticket and they put him in a position to let that get to a point he had success. Given that things had been somewhat rocky for him in pro-ball so far I think that is a legitimate thing to do, too much failure is not good.
  16. I like what Parra brings to the table for us in his role right now, but regardless of how the deck chairs are rearranged making him a starter next year to effectively replace Reynolds/Overbay in the line-up is a very modest improvement at best (the exact defensive worth of the guys getting moved around makes it tricky to really evaluate the total value). As an ultra-low cost move to put the money elsewhere it is potentially OK, but not if we are paying 5-6 million for Parra. Sandoval at a higher salary seems way more attractive.
  17. It would be a very bold move, the money for next year makes it a bit challenging but we carried almost that much with Weeks being surprisingly helpful. Given how far Segura has sunk, I'd be for it if we could snag him for a midling prospect and some cash for next year. That is a lot of extra offense, and let Jean go sort things out at home or in AAA.
  18. No on the CF portion, the consensus I had seen suggested he was OK as a CF. Which is plenty OK with me for his role on the team.
  19. Considering Parra never was a fulltime CF, and has never hit super well the two Gold Gloves along with the excellent defensive stats up until this year constitute pretty convincing evidence that he is well above average as a defender. I mean voters mess up the gold gloves, but almost never for a guy like Parra. A decline is certainly possible this year, but give irregular playing time and the known variation in year to year defensive numbers, along with his age I'd think noise is a more likely explanation.
  20. Well the results at AAA this year strongly hinted that he had made a substantial improvement in his control, and that has certainly carried over into his major league starts so far. He did have that one blow-up, but his BB and K numbers have been very good.
  21. 1. Tyrone Taylor 2. Orlando Arcia 3. Clint Coulter 4. Kodi Medeiros 5. Monte Harrison 6. Devin Williams 7. Jake Gatewood 8. Gilbert Lara 9. Taylor Williams 10. Tyler Wagner 11. David Denson 12. Jorge Lopez 13. Chris Macfarland 14. Brandon Diaz 15. Taylor Jungman 16. Jed Bradley 17. Jason Rogers 18. Victor Roache 19. Tyler Cravy 20. Micheal Reed 21. Wei-Chung Wang 22. David Goforth 23. Shawn Zarraga 24. Hobbs Johnson 25. Micheal Ratteree Next 5 in no particular order would be Matos, Magnifico, Neuhaus, Demuth, and the DSL guys. Given the extreme youth this far down the list there is a lot of sleeper potential and just a lot of room for these guys to move up. I'd definitely say the top 14 are pretty interesting to follow with good ceilings and most of them have started to produce at some meaningful level. I tend to value guys who have made the jumps to higher levels, but that is hard with the current system especially when a lot of the guys in AA or AAA who are producing seem to have leveled off at their ceilings.

Given the extreme youth this far down the list there is a lot of sleeper potential and just a lot of room for these guys to move up.
  23. It would be a great time for some power from Hererra. Not going to complain about a walk though
  24. A win today is still great, but if they had pulled off the comeback last night that would really have dialed up the pressure on the Cards. Hopefully Segura can turn things around at some point, but Hererra is now out OPSing him by a decent margin.
