  1. I would think so even if you think Gomez and Segura will be ready after the off day you can't plan to play tomorrow with Braun as your CF the full game. I will say that Melvin has seemed far more willing to shuffle guys around this year and not just sit back and wait for injuries to make roster moves. Some of that maybe because of Wang, but if you have a stable of guys with options it is a good way to try and maximize your roster.
  2. What I'd like to know is what in the world did PECOTA see in Diaz's stat line to rate him so highly? It was a solid line, and while he was young he wasn't that young, his BB and Ks were respectable, SB were there but nothing special. Not that I'm complaining, but in the article or chat after they released the PECOTA top 100 I even remember the BP folks backing away from the Diaz placement, since PECOTA has no scouting information.
  3. I think the biggest argument for DeMuth not being challenged is the paltry 2 Ks in 41 ABs.
  4. To the Hamstring idea, they could have him pinch run...
  5. Man has Arcia had a great June, 3-5 tonight and a triple shy of the cycle. Taylor also has 3 hits.
  6. Gomez is not a player I want to be without for awhile, hope everything is minor.
  7. Morneau also has the plus of being Canadian. I'd certainly be willing to deal a couple of mid range guys. Not sure what Colorado would be looking for.
  8. There is definitely an opportunity for Rogers with him moving up to AAA, not as much as if he were a lefty, but the guy takes his walks and so far hits for some power and batting average. With the positional versatility that could be enough for a late season call-up if he out hits Morris.
  9. SRB is probably more right than not, the Braves got a lot of bounce of the years in their evaluations based on reputation. And it's not like they routinely churned out 'impact talent' they got Chipper to go with Smoltz and Glavine then signed Maddux and largely churned out solid players to keep shuffling around those guys over the years. Some of that is undoubtedly a what have you done for me lately bias, that should be a little bit less than it was in the offseason. There is also certainly a position effect. Players who are imperfect, but near the top of their system will get hammered more than a similar quality player, who is in a deeper system and therefore perceived as 'depth'.
  10. Not as helpful on the platoon side, but maybe Weeks would be more interested in picking up first base? I do think it appears at this point that it would be easier to find a decent bat among corner OF types, so picking up Overbay's roster spot would still be reasonably valuable.
  11. I don't see that there is substantial evidence for any preference for Scooter among any particular segment of Brewerfan.netters. He has engendered so much discussion for a multitude of reasons, and not ones that cut cleanly to anyone particular school of thought (Which itself is one of the reasons he has spawned so much discussion). On one axis he was a low walk low power guy. Scouts though have always loved his hit tool, but somehow they botched his defensive rating (This should remind us that with the entire minors to keep track of scouts actually see guys who are not top level very sporadically). Then there was the declining production as he rose through the levels. Throw in the Weeks factor, and you have a guy for people to fight over. On the platoon splits if you want to accurately attempt to figure out what his line would be with a more normal spread of ABs, you can't use his line this year which absolutely has to be a low sample size fluke. Even players with a big platoon split don't have a .600 OPS split, more like half that in the extreme cases. Which would put his overall line somewhere in the mid to high .700s without assuming any magic growth.
  12. It is not typically their M.O. but I wonder if the Brewers have given any thought to bumping Demuth up to Wisconsin?
  13. A platoon option would give him more playing time, and some tactical options, but that it not really the goal here. One way or another our 4th OF will get ABs, if Venable is cheap in terms of prospects that is a step-up, but its hard to turn down an upgrade that could materialize in the next couple of days, while you wait for SD to get a new GM. Abreu isn't a bad option either, but I'm sure the Mets would like to cash him in for a little something on the prospect. You are getting a better bat, but worse defender, and one who can't really play CF anymore.
  14. Looks like the Mets are going to jettison him. Prior to moving into pitcher friendly ballparks he was average offensively, and had a good reputation. Oh and even his poor OPS performance this year is better than any of what we had gotten out of our bench OFers. I certainly wouldn't want to pay that salary, but if he is released and its just the minimum that sounds like a great, if relatively modest move.
  15. I always feel like Cubs games and Coors games could go either way pretty much regardless of the score, so I wouldn't judge the performance on that basis. Bad teams don't take advantage when the other team provides gifts. Good teams win the gimmes.
  16. With Omar Minaya now acting GM and a stated desire for being 'continually competitive' does San Diego become interesting as a possible destination for Estrada? In general he'd be a lot more valuable in a park where a lot more of those HRs would die, and if they are pursuing a strategy (it is not important whether they should) where they are trying to retool for next year, Estrada's low cost would be helpful. Maybe as an important piece to get Smith? Other thoughts on what might be worth grabbing from the Padres.
  17. On a purely statistical front a high batting average at AA or above combined with excellent BB/K ratio and adequate power should hold up fairly well and there are no red flags on that front. Undoubtedly some of this years performance is also really lucky with a batting average that high. His prior batting averages were pretty good, but not this good. His BB/ K ratio though has just been off the charts, which suggests the getting serious part was not simply on the defensive side. Putting it all together its hard to peg exactly how much is luck and how much is a real break out. I lean towards there being plenty of evidence of a real breakout that he deserves a serious shot.
  18. I'm partial to the idea of trying to get a bat at another position, and move someone to first. With a solid 3rd basemen you could move Aramis over to first. If you went after an OFer maybe they'd be willing to move or Braun?
  19. Salt Lake is not the biggest band box in the PCL, but it rates as a pretty high offense environment, so I'll happily settle for comfortably in control under those circumstances.
  20. I have a hard time ranking Nick ahead of Morris as a first base prospect, since Hunter also had a great AA season with a similar profile. That said he might just because Morris seems to be at best plateauing as a AAA vet (not even producing enough to be called a AAAA guy). Zarraga is actually the guy I have more immediate hope for helping at first. He lacks the power you'd like, but if the average and walk rate are real those are numbers that would play up very well. Given his contact rate is so good I'm inclined to think that the hitting for average is real.
  21. Yes the arm pump would have been hysterical, but coming right after the ad it probably makes him come off as a bigger jerk. Now he's the perfect hero. Maybe Braun can hit one tonight and do the arm pump.
  22. At this point wouldn't Zobrist as a platoon mate for Reynolds and a super sub be a nice healthy bump in production?
  23. I was really surprised with all of the noise they were making during his rehab that the Brewers didn't reset Gorzellany's rehab time and at least try Mills out in the bullpen for a little bit. Even if it was just to trade him a few nice bullpen appearances could have made him quite a bit more valuable (when compared to minimal cash).
  24. His current pace based on playing the full season and games played would be about 54 for the entire season. I'm not sure what is more impressive about that the fact he'd break the record while pitching in the NL, or the Blyleven set the bar at 50 back in 1986 aka the last time offense was generally this low. At least Lima's NL record 48 was set in 2000.
