  1. It's all about strategy getting swept by the Reds helps keep them in the race and makes them buyers and not sellers. Prospects may be realitively more valuable then in years past but good old supply and demand still works.
  2. Couldn't resist the updated numbers Hall EQA translated .221, Royce dropped 3 points to .222 after last night. Does he hear the footsteps? Will Hall be our best SS option for the rest of the year after tonight? Is Doug even considering making sure that Clayton doesn't reach those appearance incentives?
  3. I think commenting on Ford's pysche is a dubious process. He has struggled in his transition to starter, but he had a lot of success against all odds early in the season. Rookie pitcher almost always struggle. As long as he's not getting hammered Rusch style or throwing 2 games worth of pitches every night I'm content to watch him try and develop in more extended action. Compared to getting a couple of innings every other week it's a lot better for his development. Let the pitching coach see him more in the game, maybe he can figure out a way to get his K rate up and suddenly he'd be pretty good. All of which is to say that I don't think Ford is being set up to fail anymore than any other rookie pitcher we'd try (Cocco).
  4. Ladies and gentlemen the race between Billy Hall and Royce Clayton is heating up! Heading into action yesterday Royce sported a impressive only in comparison to Enrique cruz EQA of .225. Which gives him all kind of extra credit for his modest power surge and decent auxillary OBP skills, but his terrible batting average is generally making it irrelevant. Hall headed into Thursday's action with an EQA of .258 at Indy. Nothing great, but translated to the majors it was a .220! Royce went 0-4 while Hall went 2-5 with a double. The new EQAs haven't been posted yet, but I imagine both players moved a point or so. That would put the standings at .224 to .221. I'll take the 23 year old improving player over the 33 year old declining watch me flash my newly discovered old players skills SS personally.
  5. I think it's a desperate ploy by Blackwell to entice the front office to promote Fielder. Of course if it works on either account the team wins big.
  6. Anyone got a SLG or doubles total to go with Hall's phenomenal turn around? It seems like he's really started to smack the baseball into the gap ontop of a few more walks and a lot more hits. It so disappointing to look at his season totals when he seems like such a different player now after that awful start. I don't think he's a .320 hitter, but .280 with good gap power goes along way.
  7. Really David you know that what Melvin says and what he means are 2 different things.
  8. Notice Brad Nelson had a double tonight! I heard it somewhere else that it's not uncommon for wrist injuries to really sap a lot of power from players for up to a year. I don't think it would turn them into title contenders but 20 or so more extra base hits from Nelson most of them HRs would have made the team a lot more competitive. Here's to hoping he'll slowly get his swing all the way back and tuned up for next year. Nothing like a nice month or so to finish the season to help banish bad memories
  9. Funny how Rushford went MIA in Oklahoma to start the season for about as long as he struggled last fall. Now he's a hit machine. Being mostly useful because he can hit for average means that a mini slump and a period of adjustment can look really bad for him. If the base hits aren't falling for him he's not going to hit enough HRs or draw enough walks to look good at all. He does those other things but not to the extent they can pick up the rest of his game. The second half of the year would be a great chance to try him out everyday for a few months to see how well he'll translate to the big leagues.
  10. Man it must be great to be Prince, have a "slump" for over a month get back on track for a couple of weeks and your back to leading the league in OPS. When the Brewers trade Vanderwal is their any reason not to call-up Rushford?
  11. I'm feeling box score overload so many good things to comment on. One wonders what exactly people meant when they said Gwynn might be even better with a wood bat. I think we know now. It's like we froze Cecil and Tony Sr. in 1993 and have plunked them down at Beloit in 2003. OK so Tony Sr. would have magically gained a couple of steps and lost a few pounds, but those two kids know how to hit. If we can get Lou moving with these guys we might finally have seriously good prospects at every position. Bill Hall is well over 80 plate appearances into his turn around. His OPS still doesn't scream promote me, but I definitely see Jose Hernandez II a lot of Ks, solid average, good power can play multiple positions. Hopefully he can get back to turning a few more of those doubles into HRs. Very nice to see Arizona while struggling (not unexpected since these are generally very raw players) having some guys who look ready to contribute more next year.
  12. Just checking up on some stats for players. Helena looks rather exciting with some pretty good pitching (nothing like having wave after wave of pitching prospects right!). I wonder how Helena compares to Ogden in terms of park effects? We know that the Pioneer league is a hitters league so regardless the team ERA is good right now. Definitely some good looking early hitting performances. I'm concerned about Justin Barnes an OPS well over .900, but he's struck out in 1/3 of his ABs I normally don't worry about Ks, but once you approach that 1/4 mark it becomes difficult for anyone to get enough hits to be productive. Clearly he has a lot of time to refine that, but it's certainly a concern right now.
  13. That's a really terrible way to kick off the July transactions Jim, I agree let's hold our breath on the just being cautious front.
  14. Way to showcase yourself for trade EY, if only other teams followed the Brewer logic of trading for players who had success against them.
  15. I agree at this point nikip that Nuegie and Diggins should be looked at as future relievers. And they could be potentially dominant guys. But the rotation is still relatively more important because it's harder to fill than a bullpen. I think the Brewers pen is OK. If Yost had sent Vizcaino down a while ago to get some rest and refind himself the numbers would look a lot better and getting everyone else a little more regular work would help them too.
  16. What Brian no comment about Prince being one of the five Snappers with a steal last night? Gotta love those boxscore nuggets.
  17. Given the size of the commissions how many players could do better by just hiring a contract attorney to review it beforethey sign, especially with the slots MLB has. You can hire an agent and pay him 400K to get you an extra 100K, or pocket the difference.
  18. Brian you've done a great job, but I think we need a professional for this job we need a PI. I wonder if there are any that take EZ board dollars? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/devil.gif
  19. Gotta like Barnes and Palmisano so far in Helena. Justin with 3 HRs already in the young season. That's not quite Prince like, but still a nice start. So many DFE's to choose from next year... Tell me again why some GMs think it's stupid?
  20. That's a big time opportunity for Heether, at 21 in the Arizona league he was kind of already at one strike, but if he can perform in Beloit he gives improves his chances of sticking around for awhile quite a bit.
  21. It would certainly be nice to have Weeks in Beloit within the next week or so, but it's not like there's a lot of talk about any of the negotiations this year. Either the player has signed or he hasn't that's about the extent of the information out there for everyone and I'm OK with that because I'm sure it'll get done. Didn't hear a peep about Gwyn and all of a sudden he's coming Miller Park for the weekend and going to Beloit on Monday. We aren't Boston or NY needing to know what color underwear the players wear so we can make absurd value judgements and I like it that way.
  22. Yeah Brooks has been darn useful. I'm not sure that we've found the optimal usage pattern for him, but it's like getting Bob Hamelin and Mike Buddie on your roster for the low low cost of 1 spot. He can sop up innings for you here and there and give you serious pop off the bench, a trait that really stands out because we haven't had any other players really hit off the bench this year at all. Maybe Keith will get it going a bit with finally notching a HR.
  23. Let's keep in mind that the principle deal mentioning Viz was for Micheal Barret who has been out hit by just about everyone in major league baseball. Odds are pretty good that if Doug had traded him that's who he would have gotten, so I wouldn't be doing to much spilled milk crying
  24. Being up here in MN with Toby et al it was the highlight of my week getting to watch the game. By the second inning I had a good feeling because Sheets was dominant while Radke was merely good. For those that don't believe in the power of OF defense the Twins took 3 doubles off the board. And doubles are worth a lot more than singles. And Mike is right the Eddie Perez walk-off was the best game so far, though I thought Keith had one their for a moment.
  25. So just taking a quick scan that Leaves us with Weeks and Wooley (6th) that are definitely worth signing plus some DFE guys to looks at? Anybody else we should add to that list that would add a lot of value?
