  1. Count me in the "really liked it" camp. I saw it during the midnight showing on opening night. I had some complaints about the movie as a whole, but I think Ledger is deserving of the praise he is getting. I would get into my complaints a bit more, but I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it yet.
  2. I went with my roommate who is a big film buff just so that he would have someone to go with. I went in with moderate expectations (I liked Batman Begins but didn't think this would equal that.) I was pleasantly surprised by it and thought that it might actually be better than Batman Begins. I had a couple of small complaints but overall it was pretty darn good.
  3. After a one year hiatus I'll probably be heading down there with my old man to complete our annual pilgrimage. I share your frustrations of night-time boredom while in AZ. My Dad also goes to bed super early and leaves me wondering around the hotel alone until the wee hours of the morning.
  4. Ungodly. At one point I could throw a pretty mean riser and follow it up with a variation on a spike curve that sunk like nobody's business. At that point I was playing a ton. I tried to pitch earlier this summer and stunk up the field. It was a sad day when I realized that I had to move my last remaining "sport" to the past glory column. Getting old and fat stinks...
  5. Until about a week ago I was going through a MEAN bout of insomnia for about 1.5 months. Sometimes there was stuff on my mind, but mostly I just couldn't fall asleep. I tried reading crappy books, watching TV, walking my dog, listening to music, etc... but nothing seemed to work. I set up a doctors appointment but they couldn't get me in until next week. I'll probably cancel it if my problem doesn't come back. I tried to ramp up my work out routine (and by 'ramp it up" I mean that I started doing somthing) and monitor my food a little bit better. I screwed that up originally by working out too close to my sleep attempts while my adrenaline was still pumping. It is hard to force yourself to go in the morning when you are super tired from only 2 hours of sleep, but that really seemed to help me out.
  6. Didn't the Brewer's make a concious effort to move out of the north to avoid forcing the young pitchers to throw in cold weather? Wasn't that one of the big reason's they left Beloit? I would love to see them move to Appelton or Beloit but it seems to run counter to recent history. Not to mention, I'm a hippie and it is painful for me to route for a team that glorifies coal, so heading elsewhere would help me sleep a little better at night. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. I'm going to be traveling from Madison to Des Moines on Friday. With all of the recent flooding I'm a little worried about the roads. Anyone have any advice about road closures or any suggestions about where I can find that type of info out? I'm planning to take 151 to Cedar Rapids, 380 around Rapids and then 80 over to Des Moines. We're heading to the 80 / 35 music festival with The Flaming Lips, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Roots, Black Francis, Andrew Bird, Cracker, and others. Should be a good time as long as the travel goes smoothly. Thanks for the help.
  8. "Ten years? Try next year. Heck, we could cross six dollars by the end of this year, yet. I don't put it past our government to do nothing about the situation." I don't trust our government to do anything about it either (and I'm not sure there is really all that much they CAN do) that's why when it came time to buy a new car I purchased the most fuel efficient car on the market that met my driving needs. Unfortunately that meant GM products weren't on the table.
  9. Everybody and their brother should have seen this coming. GM and Ford dug in against raising the CAFE standards for years and insisted that they couldn't possibly make more fuel efficient vehicles. Meanwhile the rest of the world modernized auto efficiency standards to meet the demands of an oil / energy constrained world. That meant once gas prices started rising (as most economists have been predicting they would for years now) GM and Ford were holding fleets centered around Hummers and other SUVs that weren't as efficient as similar models being made by other companies. My family bought American made cars for generations, but when ever we've been in the market for new cars in recent years we've been looking closely at the MPGs. Unfortunately GM just hasn't been making the cut when those numbers are factored in. GM has consistently lobbied against policies that would have helped them compete in a global market place. The enviros were willing to include development and research dollars with raising the CAFE standards but they blocked that and they helped block national health care plans that would have reduced the costs associated with current and retired labor forces. I feel horrible for the families that have lost jobs. I know how devastating that can be. I just can't help but be slightly angry at the management of GM for guiding such an important and powerful industry spiraling down the tubes.
  10. I've been pretty good about biking the 4 miles to work every day since the weather has come around. On days when I have to wear a suit or can't be all sweaty I just ride in in shorts and t-shirt then change in the bathroom. Purchasing a decent bike was key for me. The ride was so much easier on a decent road bike.
  11. On two separate occasions I took really bad crashes while snowboarding and proceeded to blow chunks immediately afterwards. I think that the first time it might have had something to do with the concussion, but I'm not sure the science behind why it happens.
  12. Anyone have suggestions for a good day trip? I was thinking about trying to buzz up to the Grand Canyon or something but I haven't really looked to see how far away that is. I'll be with my father who badly needs to have an ankle replaced so we can't do any strenuous activities. Is there anything else we should check out in the Phoenix area while we're in town? We've been to spring training 6-7 times now and are just realizing that we haven't explored much of Arizona besides the ball parks yet.
  13. Please don't do it. I already thought that it looked borderline trashy to have some of the ads on the homepage that had seductive outlines of women on them. Brian and the mods have worked hard over the last 5 years or so I have been reading this site to make it a classy place to intelligently discuss baseball. I applaud them on those efforts and would like to see that continue.

  15. I lived next door to the Gygaxs for several years. I was young, but I remember them being a really nice family. I never personally got into the D+D stuff, but Lake Geneva was of course a hot-bed for it.
  16. Weird. My girlfriend, my roomates and I all got an intense craving for Ramen today. We all have had times in our life where we ate Ramen 3-5 times a week but realized that none of us could remember eating it in the last two years. Copps had some extremly limited selection so we mixed up a couple of our own mixtures. Chili and Shrimp is one of my favorites. Chili and Creamy Chicken was ok as well. We are all sitting around feeling like garbage now. Maybe 10 packages was too many.
  17. Branyan would be a good fit for a minor league contract. He adds some depth and will provide some valuable pop when added to the roster late in the season.
  18. Almost everyone I know who flies frequently (more than 10 times a year) hates Northwest. I have had so many bad experiences there it is ridiculous. I avoid them at all costs and am usually happy with other airlines.
  19. I once made the jumbo tron 4 times in one game. I was wearing a giant back brace, had a cane and was rocking a pretty serious mullet at the time. I was also sitting next to a kid that belonged on a cereal box. I was drunk enough to ignore the pain from my recent surgeries and really bust a move any time music came on. Something about a dirty looking guy with a cane dancing down the aisle must have been very entertaining to the camera operators. If I get the chance again, I will probably pretend to be picking lice from the hair of the person next to me and eating them like a monkey. That might be entertaining...
  20. I would probably be ok with Villy and Parra in the pen to start the season. Save some innings on their arms so that they will be strong all season. Then when someone goes down with injuries they can jump right in, or (if it is a position player that gets injured) trade Bush for a replacement and let one of them step into the rotation with a fresh arm.
  21. What are the odds that Hendrickson lands himself a spot in the starting rotation in KC?
  22. After my dog's leg surgery my vet recommended some over the counter meds to help keep her from trying to run around on it. A half of a benadryl will usually knock my black lab out for a while.
  23. Kremblas seems like the obvious choice, but mark me down as fairly indifferent. Couldn't you make the argument that Money and Kremblas have already had their chances to work with the kids and a fresh face might do some good? edit: And isn't Kremblas known for being overly aggressive on the basepaths or am I just making that up?
  24. I almost always rock a beard anyways, so I'll let mine grow for a while. I was thinking about shaving mine off again since it only takes a week or two to regrow, but I'll let this one flow for another month or so...
  25. Although I think a lot of the recommendations are right on the book that I've been touting lately is The Alienist by Caleb Carr. Fantastic, fast-paced murder mystery / thriller set in turn of the century New York. Carr is a historian so he is able to call on those skills to set the tone for a really exciting story. I've recommended it to 4 people in the last two months and they all loved it.
