  1. Great observation. How many of us screech at Davey Nelson or Rob Dibble or Mike Francesa whenever they tell us things we know are factually incorrect. It's the whole premise of the Stat Boy/Tony Reali segment of Pardon the Interruption. Two loudmouths get to rage on and on about something, and then they get put in their place at the end, when there is data that proves them wrong. Stat-geeks can ruin the fun of sports, the same way that stat-avoiders can. Joe Morgan was a terrible analyst because he refused to acknowledge that newer statistics can tell us things we didn't know before. I get annoyed with some stat geeks when they can't even enjoy it when something happens that the stats say shouldn't. Like with Yuni. . .I really dislike having him on the team, but sometimes when he does make a good play, it's like some people are angered by it--since that's contrary to what their beliefs about him say. In the end, this stuff is supposed to be about fun. Nobody likes an arrogant guy who thinks he's all that. Whitlock isn't always right about everything. But he is a great writer and he often raises interesting points, and offers a unique perspective.
  2. Jeter is so clutch.
  3. It reminds me of the Robert Indiana floor at the Milwaukee Arena, and I also thought of the World Baseball Classic logo.
  4. It looks like it was approved by a committee, where there were lots of ideas thrown around and nobody wanted to back down, so they just went with all of them. Miami is a great vibrant, colorful city, so I like the vibrant colors in the "M". I also like how the fish has been updated to be sleek and futuristic. But I don't like the shape of the "M". It looks like mountains, and there aren't any mountains in South Florida. And the standard issue, all caps "MARLINS", with the generic curve. . .to me, that doesn't seem to go with the bright M. But they didn't ask me. Though I think I like some of it enough to buy it on a t-shirt, so that's good--if they're going for the middle-aged, pasty Milwaukeean demographic.
  5. I like the new Marlins logo better than that Brewers division champ shirt.
  6. I think it would be hard to be Larry Yount or Mike Maddux. . .to be the big brother in the family who has a remarkable athletic career (Yount was good enough to make the majors and Maddux was in the bigs for several years)--but then to have your greatness completely eclipsed by your younger sibling. . .That would have to be a bit humbling. While you're surely proud of your younger brother, there's got to be part of you which begs to ask "Why couldn't that have been me?".
  7. I never fault a guy for doing what he thinks is best for himself and his family. And the candor and honesty is appreciated. He's been a terrific Brewer and seems like a great fellow. I'll be sad to see him go, though I hope he comes back for the ring ceremony.
  8. I don't think I'd ever be willing to give up my fandom. I had a season ticket package during the late '90s, when the team was mostly terrible. Even then, I'd enjoy going to games to see visiting superstars, to eat a polish sausage, and to have an evening out. There was no way that the Ricky Bones teams were going to compete for anything. But it was still a fun time cheering for my hometown team.
  9. I got a glimpse of someone on tv in the crowd at the Badgers game. In the sea of red, someone was wearing the iconic "F*** 'em Bucky" shirt. I'm old, so I have different sensibilities than when I was in college. While I have never liked that shirt, I used to react with a shrug. But now that I'm a dad, I'm really bugged by the shirt, and the foolishness of the person wearing it. If you're wearing that shirt in public, you're an unimaginative, unfunny clod.
  10. Bernie, you are absolutely right about that. Nothing ever changes at the WalCoFair. We lived in Delavan from 1988-1998, and went once or twice most of those years. Then we were away from the area for most of 12 years, and when we returned, it seemed that nothing had changed at all. Same vendors set up in the same spaces. Same rides. Maybe the biggest pumpkin one year will be bigger than the previous, but that's about it. To me, it's the perfect fair. You can see it all in a day and not feel totally worn out. And Backup, my diet isn't usually as terrible. I can't see my abs like you can, but I'm generally dining on lower fat fare than these last posts would indicate.
  11. Dear Brewers, Please stay out of my closet. I get to pick what I wear. Love, Jim
  12. Good call. Spent the day at the Walworth County Fair, downed a pretzel, an ear of buttered roasted corn, and a polish sausage with onions and red sauce--and none of those things hit me like the BK. Lesson learned.
  13. If you're considering one of the new Burger King California Whoppers. . .with guacamole, swiss & bacon-- Please let my abdominal discomfort & frequent trips to the bathroom serve as an advisory to make another selection.
  14. The whole bunt thing was dumb on so many levels. 1--Betancourt hasn't done it successfully in over a year. 2--The pitcher had walked the previous hitter and was in a jam. Why give up a free out? 3--Defense was right on top of Betancourt. 4--Baserunners were slow. Even if he hits into a double play, you've still got the tying run on 3rd with 2 outs. Roenicke takes the loss on that one.
  15. Death Taxes Roenicke calling for a bunt Some things are unavoidable.
  16. she seems to be one of those girls who won't dump you to your face, but just never calls you back. Awesome! Forecasting the dump ahead of time. . .that is like walking through a videogame, looking for the traps. Hope it doesn't come to that. I just think it's funny that you're plotting the worst case scenario.
  17. I would either buy an SI cover reprint like the one I linked below, or have the 8x10 signed. http://www.sicovers.com/product.aspx?pid=1418&frameid=9 I don't think the actual magazine would frame well--though others may disagree.
  18. The 82 Brewers were 94-63 before losing 4 in a row and pulling it out on the last day (and also 92-61 a few days earlier). Oops. . .you are correct. My mistake--31 games over is the record. . . I missed seeing that on baseball-reference.com
  19. You have no knowledge of what substance he tested positive for, or any other context. But yeah, go ahead & just lambast the guy... and then play the victim when people point out that you don't really know anything about what you're ranting about. I never once made any speculation on what substance he tested positive for. I don't know what's on the banned list. He does. He got it in writing, and then again in counseling. If it were something innocuous, his agent would be screaming out loud to have his name cleared. Instead, he made some passing reference to carpal tunnel medication. I don't believe that a team doctor would prescribe medication for players if that medication contained banned substances. Do you believe that? As for "playing the victim", I think it's hilarious that of the two of us (me and Rogers), more people are getting worked up over my words than they are of his actions. Getting suspended? No big deal. Calling the suspended guy a loser--that's over the top.
  20. All of the talk about him being a loser is shameful. So I should feel shame for calling him a loser--but there's no shame in earning a 25-game suspension for a substance violation? That would make the criticism worse than the violation. Shouldn't I be subject to a 26 game suspension? People make mistakes. . . Apparently only athletes who fail tests make mistakes. Those who criticize them are supposed to be ashamed.
  21. Tangentially, the 1979 Brewers have the franchise record for being the most games over .500 (30 games) on September 29th of that year.
  22. Fair enough. . .I guess reckless, but I get your point. And I'm a total hypocrite about this, as I will give a much longer leash to someone who has established himself than to someone who is tied for 314th in team history in innings pitched. Go Mark Go. . . Though part of me is still saying Go Away.
  23. I'm not going to speculate at all on what he tested positive for. I don't know what's on the banned list--and I don't know what he tested positive for the first time. To me, it doesn't matter. He had already failed one test and had undergone counseling for that. Besides the 25 game suspension (which is no small thing), he's next facing 80 games, which is a huge thing. I would say that means he is either too reckless and casual about his future, or that he's just defiant toward authority, or that he's an addict, or that he's too stupid or lackadaisical to check out supplements or medications that he takes. Wouldn't one of those things have to be true? What else is there?
  24. Calling someone you haven't met a loser for testing positive for anything seems pretty short sighted. Anyway its looking less and less like he's not as much a "loser" as he is an uneducated consumer. As an athlete you have to know what you are putting in your body; but everyone makes mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. And the mistake the Brewers made was in wasting a draft pick on Rogers. It was a pretty bad draft, but they still could have had Jered Weaver, Dustin Pedroia, Stephen Drew, Phil Hughes, Huston Street or Hunter Pence instead of a guy serving a suspension. You choose to look at Rogers' career with disappointment and hope, I choose to look at it as a waste of time and money. Calling anyone a looser when you know none of that facts is pretty short sided as well. So what are the facts? The guy has been in the organization for 7 years, and has produced 10 major league innings. He failed one substance test, resulting in counseling. And then he failed another, resulting in a 25 game suspension. How should I react to this series of facts? Should I shrug my shoulders and say "Oh well"? Should I cheer like a soccer mom on the sidelines and say "C'mon Mark, You can do it!" What's the proper way to react to his career? You can say whatever you want about Rogers, but what you can't say is that he's a successful major league player. It's time to drop him.
  25. What's with Judge Landis and the other guys in those Gestapo outfits in the background? Not sure about the uniforms, I just remember goosing Mrs. Coolidge that day. One of the perks of being the Commish.
