  1. Re: Rick Helling's pretty bad performance ... keep in mind, if he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings in Milwaukee on Friday night, the Brewers would probably be going for the sweep on Sunday. I don't care what Helling's performance is like in the minors. Get him to Milwaukee ASAP!

  3. Brady Clark has reached base 12 times in the last 4 1/2 games. It seems like we have our leadoff hitter back - just in time for Hart's return / rotting on the bench.
  4. Stopped raining. No other rain in sight. Game on!
  5. Save something for April, boys. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. A likely scenario is that Sheets was making an effort to throw at his current comfort level, say 85%. The fact is that any major league pitcher who is throwing at less than 90% of his velocity is going to get shelled, like Sheets was getting in the first inning. Sheets' pride probably took over for a batter or two and he turned it up a notch. He may have suffered a very, very minor "irritation", and then the light bulb clicked on, and he realized "what the hell am I doing" and took himself out of the game. I'd be very surprised if anything that happened today would constitute a major setback. Sheets is too smart to let anything like that happen. If anything, they'll just push the timetable back a little, like they should have all along. My best guess is that Ben will work on the side, be back on the mound for an inning in about 10 days, then start making progress toward being on the mound in Milwaukee in late April. We'll have to live with a few starts from our sixth starter, Dave Bush, who will probably win each of those starts.

  8. I'm getting a little tired of the no scoring thing at home day games. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/grin.gif
  9. Brewers at or above .500. Badgers beat Michigan. First time I could say that in 23 years. Not a bad night! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif
  10. I say yes. It's one thing to put up good stats. It's another thing to be the most feared hitter of his time. When the game was on the line, Rice was one of the two or three hitters in the game that you did not want to face. I respect that a lot more than a guy who hits 500 homers but mostly in meaningless situations in meaningless games.
  11. Re: Jeter: I get to watch him everyday, and he is the 21st century version of Robin Yount. Think about it: He's got the same swing, plays the same position, has the same power numbers, same leadership qualities, same baserunning skills, same defensive skills, same performance in clutch, same popularity, same athletic ability, ... Jeter is absolutely the real deal. Like Yount, you can't measure him fully with numbers. You have to watch him play everyday to appreciate all of the things he does to help his team win. Yount almost missed the cut for being a first-ballot HOF'er because people were basing his career solely on his numbers. Brewer fans know that Yount's greatest attributes were ones that didn't always show up in the box score. Jeter has the same attributes and is one of the few throwback players left in the majors. I think if he played 20 years ago he'd be more appreciated than he is today in the steroid era.
  12. Here's an interview with Cirillo after the game. He mentions that he'll remember the big ovation he got for the rest of his life and that he was disappointed that Helms got booed because everyone's trying their hardest to help the team win. www.jsonline.com/multimed...49&id=8660 You listen to the guy, and you realize why Cirillo is so popular in Milwaukee. If fans see Cirillo as symbolic of the Brewers' new attitude, then (with the help of a few wins) all of the negativism of the past 12+ seasons will soon be forgotten and the team will once again become immensely popular in the State.
  13. Wind will be blowing from right to left, which may favor the Cubs, who have more right-handed power. This might be the day to give Helms a start. Sheets will want to keep the ball outside against Nomah, Ramirez, Lee, etc.
  14. Was anybody out there at Jaret Wright's first game in Milwaukee in '97? That game he threw harder than anybody I've ever seen - noticeably faster than Clemens or Percival or anybody else. His fastball must have been 100+ all night. If I remember right, Ben McDonald pitched that night and there was a pretty big crowd on a weeknight because the Brewers were still on the edge of the pennant race in July. Burnitz had a little league home run (double and two base error) and there was a long rain delay. I remember parking next to where the right field bleachers are at Miller Park. Another random comment: will Sheets break the Brewer record for strikeouts in a season by mid September?
  15. Part of it may be that the Brewers are playing their fourth straight series at home, and those who wanted to catch the team a few times on this homestand probably attended the Astros and Twins games. I would expect a nice crowd on Thursday afternoon if the weather's nice and expect attendance to pick up again on their next homestand.
  16. They should have brought in Burba to start the 6th, or at least have a very quick hook. Being down only 1-0 after 5 with your fifth starter ... why even bother having 13 pitchers on the roster if you're not going to use them in obvious situations?
  17. This is the beginning of the toughest 6-game stretch of the year - until, well, the following series against Houston, but getting a win under the belt, and staying above that .500 mark is vital. The longer they stay above .500 while at the same time getting the most difficult part of the schedule out of the way, the better chance they will have to be in contention for a winning record in August and September. Staying above that .500 mark is extremely important. In the post-1992 era, it seems like the Brewers have had stretches of being above .500, but as soon as they drop a game under, the floodgates open and suddenly they're 10 games under. Hopefully those days are coming to an end.
  18. ESPN Game Update has Brian Giles being tagged out at home and being on third base at the same time. It's also weird to see the Brewers with 4 runs, yet nobody currently in the game has an RBI.
  19. Podsednik scores 9 runs over the weekend, including several SB's and a couple of home runs. I think our search for the center fielder of the future is over.
  20. the guy throwing HR derby pitches to Sexson. I've never seem such a mixture of sinkers, sliders, and knuckleballs from one guy.
