  1. Most of our major league roster is set for a number of years, so theres little immediate need for talent, and theres no glory in making Nashville better. Also, the Brewers will continue to draft, and draft well. The compensation picks will be higher than the 2nd round, where we drafted Hardy and Gollardo. With the scouting staff that Jack Z now has in place, the drafts are better than ever. It is difficult to predict what the price for Buehrle would be, because there hasn't been a pitcher his caliber dealt at the dealine the last 2 years. Oakland dealt 2 pitchers similar to him a few years ago when they traded Hudson and Mulder, but those were offseason deals.
  2. I too have to agree with Briggs, and I have to say its pretty astute planning by Ned.
  3. I second the motion. I guess that makes it official.
  4. Now that Parra is finally healthy and getting in a groove with regular work, his command seems to be back. With control, a 6 pitch mix, and velocity returning to the mid 90s, he's a dynamite prospect again. Also, his full recovery from shoulder surgury gives me hope that Mark Rogers can do the same.
  5. Do you really think its fair to compare our bullpen to AL bullpens? Facing a PH is not anything like facing David Ortiz, Jim Thome, Travis Hafner, or Frank Thomas. The Brewers aspire to be the top team in the NL, why settle for an upper middle of the NL bullpen? Also, our bullpen ranking is only as good as it is because we have better ERAs from the backend end of the bullpen than most bullpens, not because of the guys pitching leverage innings.
  6. Lester is a perfect fit for in this deal. He is MLB ready, but Boston won't have a place for him if they get Buehrle. Next year, Lester might having a hard time beating out Clay Bucholz, an even better prospect. The one reason the Sox might not be interested is because of his medical condition, he is kind of a roll of the dice because of that. As for The Sox wanting Braun or Gallardo, thats just speculation by Fox Sports, and they even said that wouldn't happen. What we do know about Kenny Williams is he likes power arms, and he makes his deal well before the dealine. Also, Buehrle was willing to talk extension with the White Sox, but wanted a 5 year deal. Is this something the Brewers could consider? He is just 28, and is really , really good. Again, his numbers would be even better pitching in the NL.
  7. Anyone know what the supposed Buehrle to Boston deal would be? Most of Boston top prospects are a ways off. The guys that are close, Buchholz and Ellsbury, are likely not on the block.
  8. With TBow, he's either lights-out or trouble. For those who want someone more steady, it's important to keep in mind that the 'steady' option may well yeild similar aggregate results, but without the extremes of Derek. I'll take him over the 'steady' option as a set-up man, simply bc when he's on, no one can damage him. Good set-up men, the guys your calling steady, are lights out just as often, but when they have a bad outing, they don't completely give the game away, thats how they have such significantly lower ERAs. You make it sound as though the steady guy has a bunch of games where they give up 1 run, and they both have the same ERA in the end, but thats not the case. Turnbows ERA is twice that of many of the good set-up men.
  9. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I should edit that he's actually doing better than I thought. He has 3 blows on the year but 20 holds, 1 save and 1 win. That's 22 out of 25 good appearances. 88% of the time we are successful with Tbow pitching. 1 of those holds he was credited for came in a game he took the loss, so wipe that 1 out. He had 3 games he lost , plus the blow today. Also, I think ERA does tell some of the story for a reliever. In todays game, he didn't just allow the game to be tied, he he gave up the go ahead run too. if you look at game logs from top set-up men, they have more games that are blown saves where they give up just 1 run, thus still giving there team a chance to win.
  10. It looked a week ago that Lou Palmasano had lost all the steam from his hot start, with his average dipping into the 280s. Well, he's back over 300 and hit his 5th homer tonight. Stars up 6-0. He putting up very impressive numbers for the Southern League. Guys that hit this well there can hit enough for MLB.
  11. Id hope that while he was in town Mr Melvin made some contact just to inquire about the availablility of Zack Grenkie. Or how about Dave Riske? The Royals might want to keep a young guy like Grienke, but is Riske really in there longterm plans? He has had a pretty good career in the AL. He's better than most of our bullpen. he's not my 1st choice, because I'd prefer someone who'd be an option to close next year, but I'd put him on the list, or get him and another top guy.
  12. I totally agree that he's not in the same league as Linebrink, etc. But I also don't think he's the worst the league, either (as was suggested earlier). Your right in that he's not the worst, I kind of said that for effect. However, he is in the lower tier, and thats the only spot on the team you could say that about. It should be rectified, as it doesn't cost a ton to fix, and the solution could also give us an option to close next year, something we don't have now.
  13. I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. All that chart shows is how many oppurtunities the Brewer set-up man gets. Which of those guys is worse than T-bow? I'll give you Baes for Bal, even though he only has 1 BS. Rauch has a higher ERA, but that happened when he had to close some games. I don't think he's horrible, but he suffers in comparison to CoCo and Villanueva. What he suffers in is when he's compared to other set-up men who have ERAs half of what his is.
  14. Theres not a team in baseball with a worse set-up guy than T-Bow. Its Melvin that has an unfounded love affair with him, not Yost. Hopefully someday soon Melvin realizes that it might be a good idea to get the type of set-up guy the rest of the contenders have. You know, one of the guys with an ERA half of what Turnbows is. Like: Linebrink Shields RSoriano Burgos Neshek JRincon Okajima
  15. Why does no one ever bring up the Bartolo Colon trade? I know the Expos almost ceased to exist but they gutted their sysytem for a one year rental. Sure, the Expos gave up Sizemore, who is awesome now, but the other key to the deal was Brandon Phillips, who flopped badly in Cleveland, and Cleveland ended up getting nothing for him. The Expos also got Ryan Church with Colon, he's a pretty decent player. The Expos ended up dealing Colon later, for 2 promising pitchers, 1 of them was Tomo Ohka, who was fairly productive for them.
  16. 18 year old Edgar Trejo played 3rd today, getting 3 hits Your right, he's an interesting guy. He actually won't turn 18 until later this summer. Considering they've had him batting cleanup both games, he's definately someone to watch. It would be nice to get even a little production from Latin America.
  17. That's not true - TBow's ERA when his 3 blowups are removed is under 2. Like I said, thats only because Cordero bailed him out of jams numerous times. Also, you've picked the wrong day to defend Turnbow. There isn't a team anywhere in MLB that has a better 8th/9th inning combo than the Crew this year, despite that karmic negative attitude that some here have about our pen. That couldn't be farther from the truth. How about K-rod and Shields Saito with Broxton and Billingsly Wagner with Burgos and Feliciano Hoffman with Linebrink and Bell Nathan with Neshek and Rincon Paplepon and Okajima Over half the set-up men I have listed there have ERAs under 2. Turnbows is over 4.
  18. True, but thats only because Cordero bailed out Turnbow numerous times. Nobody bails out Cordero. The Brewers only have 1 reliever capable of a sub 3 ERA. Thats a low number for a contender. They need to add another dominate late inning guy.
  19. Buehrle pitched injured last year, it was an anomally. He is the guy he has been this year, and his numbers would be even better in the NL. He would give the Brewers a 2nd legit stud next to Sheets. However, I don't see it, as there will be teams that need him way more than us, and they'll be willing to give up more prospects than us.
  20. Thats a pretty cool video Battlekow. Its interesting that the things Gomez is talking about with Laporta's swing is the same thing Bill Schoeder gushes about in Hardy's swing. It helps Hardy generate power despite not having a powerful build, I can only imagine what type of power it gives a rocked up guy like Laporta.
  21. Mench hits LHP at a 900 OPS clip over hundreds of career AB's Mench's OPS against LHP has regressed for 4 straight years, just like the rest of his numbers have. What he did in the past is in the past. He is no longer that player who destroys LHPs. He could be replaced by dozens of guys who are playing in the Minors right now.
  22. I guess we have conflicting reports on Jeffress velocity last night, as this article in the link report has Jeffress 94-96. My guess is the stadium gun is malfunctional. If he started throwing 89 MPH fastballs, he be yanked off the mound, as it would be an indication of injury.
  23. What an amazing start for Caleb Gindl. I was shocked when the paced the 18 year old 5th round pick in advanced rookie ball. Not only that, but he bats cleanup, and is the only player on his team hitting so far, despite all of his teammates being more advanced JuCo and 4 year college players. Gindl is hitting .400 through 3 games, with 3 doubles, 3 walks, and just 1 K. It would be ultra-impressive if he could continue to hit at this level, as it would put him on or ahead of pace with the organizations past 1st and 2nd round picks. Colbyjack had Gindl as his steal of the draft for this year. I guess thats why Patrick is the big cheese when it comes to the draft.
  24. isn't it way too early in his career to think about dealing Cappy? you've got to give the guy a couple more years to really learn what kind of pitcher he will become. he hasn't been in the league all that long; do you still consider him a prospect pitcher or an established one? He'll be 29 later this year, and has shown no signs of improvement since 2005. He had 3+ seasons entering the year. I don't know what others think, but I've considered him maxxed out for a couple of years already. He has good, but not great stuff.
  25. Many are saying you never have enough pitching, but I'm saying deal Cappy to improve the pitching. All the starters are similar, but adding a top late inning reliever would improve the team ERA. Some think we'd really miss Cappy down the stretch, but lets not forgot that he had ERAs of 7.01, 4.42, and 5.17 after the break the last 3 years. What if he has another 2nd half collapse? Obviously, Bush needs to continue to pitch like he has pitched in June, and Vargas has to continue to pitch like he has all year, but we don't have to make a decision untill Cappy is healthy again. We'll know more about this rotation when Cappy is back.
