  1. I wouldn't deal Gross for Wilkerson. Gross will likely fill the 4th OF spot for a few more years, and I could argue Gross is the better player now. Gwynn has real value. Theres teams out there starting Nook Logan, Chris Duffy, Coco Crisp, Juan Pierre, and Alfredo Amezaga in CF. They'd all prefer Gwynn. Even if Wilkerson returns to his form from 3 years ago, he makes little impact as a reserve. This team needs another top reliever, and has no closer for next year. Save the trade chips for that.
  2. Mike Timlin had a long, successful career as a 1 pitch sinkerballing reliever despite a poor K rate, hopefully Dillard can get to that level.
  3. On the Nashville broadcast the other day the announcer was talking about a conversation he had with a Brewer scout. The scout told him he didn't know if parra's shoulder could handle starting longterm, but was also worried if Parra was a good fit for relief, as it takes him along time to warmup.
  4. No matter what the haul, I think it best to get a young blue chip position player, as our rotation, as I stated earlier, is at max capacity and within the next two years, should only get more crowded with the ascension of my favorite prospect, Billy Inman. Cappy should only be dealt for immediate help, and our lineup is even fuller than our rotation. I wouldn't trade for an OF when we already have Hall and Hart, plus we just drafted our LF of the future. We could use bullpen help, and we have no closer next year.
  5. The combined ERA of Capuano starting and Bush/Vargas relieving would likely be higher than the combined ERA of Bush/Vargas starting and Otsuka relieving. Thats a reason. That, and we's still get additional help from the deal.
  6. I think dealing Capuano has to be part of this brainstorming session of how to open a spot for Gollardo. He has far more value to most teams, he carries a former All-Star tag, but he's only slightly more valuable to the Brewers. His value is that he's a clearly established player. He is the one guy in this equation that has the value to bring an impact player in return. Vargas has quality stuff, so its believable that he has improved. Bush is a quality pitcher despite his present 5.48 ERA. His career ERA is still just 4.47 in 530 innings, almost half of those in the AL. He's improved each month, and looks like he could be the guy we expect for the rest of the season. Capuano has also been significantly worse in the 2nd half in each of his 3 Brewer seasons.Dealing him after his return has to be part of the discussion.
  7. Ethridge was effective for most of the game, but he just has no velocity. His sinker was 80-83, but somehow how he got outs with it throwing just about every pitch. When he got in trouble, he threw a few 4 seemers up in the zone. They were 86 MPH, and they got wacked.
  8. Otsuka is every bit as good, if not better, than Franscisco Cordero. It took one of the best LFs in the game to get Cordero. It will take a significant amount to get Otsuka, but having a setup man with a 2 ERA would be huge for this team, as would filling the closer rolew for next year at a reasonable $ amount.

  10. I find it odd Laporta's signing hasn't been announced today. In the past, it was always announced before the game, wasn't it?
  11. Braun made it just as fast as Weeks, and while Braun was an awesome college hitter, Laporta pretty much blew his numbers out of the water. Hauser said sometime in 2009, which sounds right to me.
  12. I would bet that it is a around 50-50 that Otsuka would be gone after the deadline. Its been rumored that Texas would deal both, as rebuilding teams don't need proven closers. They have a suprisingly deep bullpen for such a bad team. They recently sent down talented young Wes Littleton, simply because they didn't have room for him. I love the idea of Otsuka. Texas is a super-tough place to pitch, his numbers could actually get better in Milwaukee, not that his career Texas 2.10 ERA there needs to. Parra is the perfect kind of guy to deal, we know his medical history better than anyone, and Gord Ash doesn't see his future as a starter because of it. Texas is so desperate for starters they need to take chances on guys like Parra. It would take a package, including parra though, which is fine. We have depth.
  13. Bring up Rottino on Sept 1, and he could fill in a couple times for Jenks down the stretch vs. lefties if need be. The vet bat is only better if the vet bat is productive. I'll take production over experience every day. All those 4 seasons show is that Mench is steadily regressing, and that this years abysmal performance should have been expected, and that only a more abysmal performance should be expected in the future. As for Rottino, all he has to do is match Mench's 682 OPS, and he makes the team better. By giving the team a 3rd catcher, it gives the team a load of versatility. Estrada can be used as a PH in his offdays. It can now PR for the slowfooted catchers, which Rottino can do himself. He has 10 steals this year and had 12 last year. Rottino also provides depth at 3B, as well as 1B, where both Miller and Graffanino have made starts this year.
  14. for those of you wondering if Vinny would make more sense on the Brewer roster than Kevin Mench, Rottino has a surprisingly odd split vs. southpaws this season -- only a .482 OPS (9-for-45) in an acknowledged small sample... That is an odd split, but he did pound lefties for a 980 OPS in 2006, so it will likely even out over time.
  15. Crabbe can play 2B and now gets time in CF, those are 2 tough positions to fill. He's outhitting what Gwynn hit at AAA last year. I see no reason why he couldn't be a Willie Harris type player. It would be handy to 1 player who could handle all the roles Gwynn and Graffanino fill.
  16. Nice start by Shawn Fergeson. He may be older age-wise, but not experience-wise, as he missed alot of time in college with injury. Its worthwhile to keep giving oppurtunities to hard throwers like him. Did we ever find out if it was an injury that kept him in EST to start the year?
  17. If he signed for $2M, isn't that technically 15% below slot? Which fits in nicely with you're "Brewers are cheap" theory, X. ;-) MLB decreased slot value by 10% this year. Kershaw got slightly overslot last year at the 7th spot, and 7th pick Homer Baily got even more than 5th pick Mark Rogers in 2004, throwing the numbers out of wack. $2 million was the 7th pick slot and reported here. Conversely, they did cough it up for Gindl Gindel got a bonus of $144,900, which was %10 less than the same selection received last year, which is slot value. there are certainly some candidates for over-slot bonuses. Do you mean we might sign someone to an overslot bonus, or we already did? I don't see any evidence that we signed anyone yet to an overslot bonus yet. Hopefully we still do, considering we didn't have a 2nd round pick this year.
  18. BA now has Laporta listed as signed, for $2 mill. That would be full slot value. I guess Boras worked his magic again, as seniors don't usually get full slot value.
  19. I'm interested in Shawn Zarranga. Smart, hard working, and speaks 4 langages, which could be an asset for a catcher. Even better, it seems he has some baseball skill too.
  20. Braun started out in Rookie ball, yet he was making an impact in the majors less than 2 years later. If Laporta gets to the bigs in less than 2 years, would you still be disappointed in him? Its not where you start, its where you finish.
  21. I think Corbeau is right, Laporta won't appear in rookie ball action because they don't start play for another 9 days. Laporta isn't going to wait around playing exhibitions against overmatched players that long. Weeks played a few games in rookie ball, but remember that he had a long layoff after signing late. Laporta is even more polished/productive than Braun was coming in, by a dedcent margin. In fact, he could be the most advanced bat the organization has ever drafted.
  22. Is that the lineup formula someone posted a link for us last year that we all got to play with? Any chance that could be added to the FAQ thread Casey 1992 started?
  23. If Cappy can't make his next start, i would think they would put him on the DL, retroactive to his last start. Villy would likely stay in the rotation, and Yo would be called up to fill CVs role in the bullpen.
  24. If Maroth is to be a free agent at the end of the year, why would Texas trade for him? Like Brian said, Maroth isn't a horrible pitcher, but he's a free agent after '08. I know it seems like the Brewers hadn't gotten a hit in like a year, but its still 2007. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I agree with Sbrylski and Boy Jenius, Maroths value should be similar to Vargas and Bush. If nothing else, we will be able to see what the market is for them. If Maroth is enough to get Gagne, then we should jump in on that deal.
  25. Buck Rogers has apparently inspired Mat Gamel enough to hit his 1st homer of the season. 1-0 Manatees.
