  1. Have to imagine Merklinger, Fryer and Fonseca are also among the signees, but we won't know for a bit. Ya, and I'll take th easy guess, and go with seniors Cline, Pasma, Rindal, and Baron. Hopefully some of the others are HS talent, like Hague.
  2. The Brewers have anounced half of the teams picks have signed. They decline to release the whole list , but Lucroy and Farris are among the signings. Negotiations are close with Laporta. Excellent news. Lots of players already signed from past the 1st 10 rounds.

  4. I'm waiting to talk to one of the scouts for the Brewers and see what they have to say and go from there," he said. Huh, That makes it sound like Tanner might sign, pretty rare for a 40th round HS guy. Its nice theres no college commitment to compete against.
  5. Well if it makes anyone feel better...apparently college first basemen are the safest pick around. Wow PTH, thats awesome. So your telling me LaPorta has a 1 in 3 chance of being a HOF? Why were we so oblivious to the selection beforehand?
  6. The guy seems like a Pat Burrell type to me. Nothing wrong with that. Burrel was the 1st guy I thought of for a Laporta comparison, as both were big, muscular, college sluggers from the right side. However, I then realized that Laporta had almost eliminated Ks from his game, and had started hitting to all fields, instead of being the streaky pull hitter Burrel remains. That made me much more excited about Laporta.
  7. Hopefully they convinced some talented HS players who were passed because of signability to take there money over night. Guys like OF Chad Jones or RHPs Seth Blair, Taylor Cole, or Evan Dinieli.
  8. Of course if LaPorta turns out like Geoff Jenkins, a Bando draftee that also played LF out of college, then I think we've got a winner. Its interesting you bring up Jenkins, because he was slammed for his defense when he was drafted, many calling him a DH, much like they say about Laporta. Your right, if Laporta turned out to be a less strike prone version of Jenkins, that would be a very successful pick, as Jenkins was also fasttracked.
  9. It looks like a change in philosopy at 1st glance, but the team did offer over slot to HS LHP Casey Crosby, a raw hard thrower, so its likely just luck it turned out this way. Hopefully they convinced some talented HS players who were passed because of signability to take there money over night.
  10. An article about an Illinois kid the Brewers almost drafted Good find Pnut. The Brewers offered him $500 K at 6:05. What round were we at then? Would that have made him our 3rd rounder? Disappointing he didn't accept, because he's definately a high ceiling type of guy we didn't get. To be honest, I'd be disappointed if he was sent to WV. With that gaudy OPS (did I get that right 1.399, if so, that's playstation good) I'd say Huntsville or Manateeville. I think its important to get the kid off to a good start, so WV is a good idea. Remember, he is making a position switch, so might be a good idea to put him somewhere that he can dominate with the bat while he concentrates on his glove. He can always get bumped at the All-Star break if he's dominating, and that bump could be A+ or even AA. If they keep him in WV all year, he could always skip A+ and go right to AA next year. Braun was drafted in June 2005 and made his debut in May 2007, and he started out 2006 in A+.
  11. So I was looking down the draft boards of the various teams in the NL and the Padres have 12 picks already. I don't know why, but it really chaps my rear the more I think about how lame this draft system is It is frusturating, but if it makes you feel any better, SD wasted a ton of there picks on extremely low ceiling players who profile as backups at best. They're following the A's formula they used to ruin there minor league system.
  12. Or by becoming a 1st or 2nd rounder? It's not like this guy was taken 34th, he was picked 101 overall! By definition, he would improve his stock if he moved up at all, and in terms of the payslots, every little bit helps. In terms of cash received, he's potentially talking the difference between like 200,000 and 1-3 million dollars. College seniors don't usually get slot value contracts, because they have no leverage. Bonus info can be found at BA. lucroy could move up and still get less money. As the 101st pick, Lucroy will get about $380 K. For an example, we'll use Matt Long. He was a 35 rounder in 2005 after coming back from TJ surgury. He returned for his senior year, and moved into round 2, #73, a $490 K slot. As a senior with no leverage, he recieved just a $390 K bonus. It was a good move for him, but it wouldn't have been worth the risk at all if he'd already been drafted in a $380 K slot.
  13. They've taken three players with some leverage in a row here- two juniors and a HS guy that is being pursued by much of the SEC. All very easy signs by the Brewers. Whats Lucroy going to do, go back and play his senior year and improve his stock playing small school college ball? The only way he could improve his stock is by becoming a top ten pick, and he's just not that kind of player. His numbers are similar to the small school catcher the Brewers drafted in round 7 last year, and signed for $115 K. lucroy will jump at slot money as will Farris.
  14. BA had Lucroy #72, so he's a pretty good bargain here at 101. He was the #1 prospect in the Florida Collegiate Summer League, a wood bat league.
  15. The Brewers are up here in a few picks for round 3. I think it was Geotite who wanted Chad Jones, and I think he's still left. He has the big upside Jack Z likes, hopefully they'll do it.
  16. Heres some outstanding interview links from JS Online. Jack Z makes it very clear Laporta will play LF. The team had him in Brevard County for a workout, and was tried in LF then. Jack Z also acknowledges the team went outside the box with this pick. Boy did they ever. While many of us here now support the pick after getting over the initial shock, none of could have guessed it in a million years.
  17. Question for Patrick How would you compare Laporta to Lance Berkman coming out of college? The Astros had Bagwell at 1st, so the they moved Berkman, a college star 1B who didn't have great athletism, to LF. Berkman became a decent LF, and is possibly the most underrated hitter in the game. It seems like Laporta has Berkmans patient approach, power, and work ethic. Does Berkman the college player outdate your enormeous field of knowledge? Also, IIRC, wasn't Jason Lane a college 1B too ? He also moved to the OF, but his bat didn't succeed. He seems to be much more athletic than Laporta, but what kind of hitter was he in college?
  18. Interesting. The Brewers are in need of a backup outfielder who can hit right-handed and come off the bench. How much of an insane reach would it be to call him up in Sept? Thats a really intriguieng idea Brian. Its even more likely if Laportas deal includes a major league contract. The Brewers have plenty of 40 man roster space to give a major league deal, and they did give 1 to Weeks. If a major league deal allows the Brewers to get Laporta under slot, its worth it.
  19. We need to face reality--Our window is only open for about 4 seasons. Then we start hemmoraging players once they reach post-arby contracts. LaPorta will be in the bigs by the time Prince & Co. move on the greener pastures. We have Prince for 4 more seasons after this year. Braun made it to the majors in just under 2 years, and Laporta is a further advanced hitter than even Braun, or Alex Gordon was. Zimmerman hit well in the majors the year he was drafted, Laporta has a chance to do that if he does indeed have a predraft deal.
  20. I'd be willing to bet good money that Laporta has a predraft deal, and the Brewers did what they do best, save money. The Brewers have been frugile in the draft in the past, and that continues. Laporta is a really good hitter, far better than Wieters has been. He could be in the majors by the end of next season.
  21. BAs mock draft is weaker than usual. It didn't seem like they had much inside info at all. Also, what is meant by "MLB will come down hard on teams that go over slot." I've seen that several places, but what can MLB really do?
  22. Going back to Rawnsley's mock draft, I really like his comment about how well Jarrod Parker has handled the attention this spring. If he's there for the Brewers pick, and its down to him and Aumont, I really, really hope it is Parker. I agree completely with this. Getting Parker, despite being a HS pitcher, would be pretty exciting. He doesn't just remind me of Roy Oswalt as a pitcher, but also as a person. Very down to earth and focused. I would take Parker over Porcello. Porcello may be a slightly better prospect (maybe), but his pricetag is not in line with the difference, and we'd have to deal with Boras his whole time here. If they turn out like projected, we'd eventually buy out Parkers arby years, and with it a year or 2 of FA, that just doesn't happen with Boras clients. All that said, I still want Moustakas.
  23. 1. Hart CF 2.Gross RF 3. Hardy SS 4. Fielder 1B 5. Hall 2B 6. Jenkins/Mench LF 7. Braun 3B 8. Esrada/Miller C
  24. Not alot of Brewer related questions, but I thought this one was huge news Q: Martin from Fox Vally, WI asks: Thanks for your awesomeness. Are you hearing the Brewers might pony up for a Boras client like Moustakas, or even Wieters? A: Alan Matthews: If Wieters falls, a source reported that the Brewers were doing their best to make sure they had a good last look at him, by sending some upper level scouting personnel into Jacksonville, Fla., for the ACC tournament, so it's a possibility they would be willing to spend the money to get him at No. 7 if he falls.
  25. I have seen a few people question Wieters' productivity in college, which prompted me to write a Crack of the Bat column on his productivity during his college career: Really a good article on a hot topic item. Wieters production has gone up just the last few weeks alone, which is good to see. When talking about a disappointment I think many people want to see a player like Wieters put up ?Nintendo? numbers, meaning numbers that don?t seem humanly possible while dominating the competition. I'm not so much looking for Nintendo numbers, but your right in the fact that I'm disappointed in him because I thought he'd put up numbers like Braun, or even Gillespie. However, I'm sure you could throw at me 100 guys with Wieters production that turned out to be middle of the order hitters. I guess the other thing I should realize is that if Wieters turns out to be a #6 type hitter, he'll still play in a few All-Star games.
