  1. Lawrie doesn't need to be added to the 40 this offseason, so adding him now would waste a spot this offseason. Hard throwing reliever Brandon Kintzler is a guy who's MLB ready and needs to be added to the 40 man roster
  2. I would guess this will end in a trade?
  3. Pardon me since my eyes may have been deceiving me, but hasn't Macha used Axford in the 8th inning for 4+ out saves (or at least attempts) several times over the last month or so? Yes, Macha has done that, and its worked well. However, Gonzalez didn't use Gregg for a 4 out save in that game. He went to his set-up guy to close it out in the 9th. Gregg was used to get 2 outs in the 8th. The difference in Macha and Gonzalez is their leadership abilities. Macha isn't a bad strategist, except when he bats Escobar 2nd.
  4. And had we had the benefit of knowing his prime was past at the time of the signing, you'd have been absolutely correct. But he was coming off of arguably his best career the year before, so that kinda blows that theory out. He was 31 years old when Melvin signed him. How could you possibly believe he would be in his prime for the 3 years we signed him for? What a player did at age 27 or 28 is rather irrelevent to their production at age 32 or 33.
  5. The teams with numerous fireballers in the bullpen have made trades to stock their bullpens. Melvin hasn't traded for a hard throwing pitcher in years. Our farm system is starting to produce quality relievers, and I'm excited to see Jeffress and Kitzler this September. I hope they both gets regular work, and gain as much experience as possible, along with McClendon.
  6. I was just about to ask the same thing. I looked up his draft report and found this: Merklinger's fastball is well below-average.So he may be one of those soft tossing curve ball specialists. http://www.minorleaguebas.../index.jsp?mc=merklinger Thats an inaccurate report. Merk isn't a fireballer, but coaches have described him as having above average velocity for a lefty.
  7. In light of the recent comments by Gomez, I will stand by my original statement. Now he's not just a terrible player, but also a team cancer. Doug, just admit your mistake and cut this guy already.
  8. Signing past their prime FA middle relievers to multi-year contracts because you have a weak bullpen is like buying scratch-off tickets if your short on the rent. Its going to cause more harm than good. Can someone name some good middle relief signings? Are there any?
  9. I have no way of knowing when the transaction took place? Can't I just look at the date? It happened at the beginning of the offseason. Stop pretending like Melvin spent the whole offseason shopping Hardy, and the best he could find was Gomez. The truth is Melvin mistook Gomez for a real player, just as Melvin did with Kevin Mench.
  10. The Pirates have spent massive money on the draft the last few years. If they ever get competitive, they'll use more of that money on MLB payroll.
  11. I can't believe the White Sox haven't grabbed Hawpe. They need a lefty stick, and they're DH's have been awful. Hawpe might not be a terrible choice for their 1B next year, and they'd have better knowledge of that if they gave him an audition this year.
  12. I don't know how you know that, especially when Hardy was dealt so early in the offseason. The Brewers would have been better off waiting than accepting the 1st bad offer they got.
  13. I still don't know what your talking about because they weren't traded for each other. Its pretty clear Hardy has been better than Gomez though. The Brewers gave up the better now player for nothing in return. Hardy will likely continue to be better than Escobar through next year. Now the Brewers have completely wasted 1 of Escobar's cheap years.
  14. Its not close based on what? Parra has a 5.65 ERA, Narveson 5.69. I'd say thats close. If you just needed 1 win, go with Parra, and pull him after 5.
  15. An easy way to limit Narveson's innings would be to release him. He was given an oppurtunity, and clearly failed. He's not young, he'll be 29 before next season. He's not in next year plans. Its time to explore other options. Mark has had a fine season, and was only on the DL with a blister.
  16. Gomez would have a split contract, and wouldn't earn his major league salary if he wasn't on the major league team. I think Gomez is too dumb to ever have the light go on. I'd include him in an offseason trade, while he still has an ounce of trade value. If he goes down to AAA and puts up a sub 700 OPS like he has this year, he'll be forgotten.
  17. I would much rather have my utility guy be a strong defender at SS than a poor defender there but a good PR. Were not pulling anyone for a PR. Luis Cruz is a cheap utility option that is a strong defensive SS. Farris would struggle to put up a 600 OPS in the majors, if he played fulltime, and will be worse with sporadic playing time. Matt Cline is the 2B at BC. He has been better at the plate than Farris ever was, despite the fact that Cline didn't play last year. Cline has a 400 OBA this year, Farris had an OBA of just 341 there last year.
  18. Since the beginning of July, Dan Merlinger has made 9 starts with a 1.83 ERA, 7.4/1 K/BB ratio, and 11.3K/9. I'm impressed.
  19. Not on a contender. Contenders want to win now. Contenders trade future talent for now talent all the time. This isn't a discussion of who has more trade value. If we were a contender and we had both players, Escobar would be in AAA. Also, Hardy has an OPS of 855 since the all-star break. He's always been streaky, but his 2nd half resurgance is a big reason why the Twins have pulled back in front of the Sox. Escobar has yet to have a single 700 OPS month. I find it surprising I have to defend Hardy. I used to take the other side of the fence in discussions when posters stated "Hardy can flat out hit", "Hardy is becoming a good OBA hitter", and "Hardy is a perfect fit for the #2 spot". Turns out none of those things are true. What is true is that he's a very valuable SS because he is a strong defender with some pop in his bat.
  20. Farris was sent to Nashville because he didn't have a starting spot at Huntesville. Farris has been a little overmatched at AAA. Farris might be a great basestealer, but you can't steal 1st.
  21. Green is a very average 3B, he certainly isn't a SS. He's nothing like Cirillo or Loretta. He's very similar to Tyler Houston. Short and squatty, with a quick but stiff lefthanded stroke. They are grooming Zealous Wheeler as a utility guy. Eric Farris has always been a low OPS guy, he's not a prospect.
  22. Its just tough to believe they had a spot for Andy Sauter, but not Romanski.
  23. The biggest hope is that, for the 1st time in years, Melvin's FA signings will total up to be above replacement level. Thats not asking too much with $20-30 million to spend, is it?
  24. Can I choose option 3, an open spot on the 40 man roster?
