  1. Let me start this with these observations: Turang is a shortstop who needs to continue to develop in the major leagues. Asking a rookie to perform at a position where he has limited experience is a recipe for disaster. Give him some starts at 2B too but not as his primary position. Adames is well suited to play 3B. He wouldn't be the first power hitting SS to end up at 3B. With Adames at SS, there's no need to add a 3B. Urias is a good offensive second baseman. So I'd move Adames to third, Urias to second and pencil in Turang as the starting SS with one big caveat. They need to sign either Elvis Andrus or Jose Iglesias to provide a veteran to mentor Turang who can also get starts at 2B in relief of Urias against LH pitching. At this stage of their careers with limited power Andrus or Iglesias could be had for 3-4 million less than they would have had to shell out to keep Wong and they'd get the bonus of veteran SS.
  2. Not one mention of the lack of offense from the catching position?

  4. Peterson has never been an everyday player. I don't think it's a wise idea to expect him to become one at age 33. He is what he is, a good utility player. Brosseau? Maybe as DH because his glove is distinct liability. Nobody brings up this but I think it would be better to keep Turang at his natural position (SS) and move Adames to 3B, Then you have to decide if Urias' 2022 season was an aberration. It certainly wasn't good enough to be an everyday 3rd baseman. I don't think he's done enough to be penciled in as a starter at 2B for next year either. So I'd bring back Wong. Peterson would be my odd man out. Part of Peterson's value was as 5th outfielder. They have a glut of outfielders if both Frelick and Mitchell make the roster.

  6. Catcher is the biggest need they have and it's not close. Caratini is an excellent backup but he's not a guy you want starting more than 70 or so games. With the emergence of William Contreras, maybe the Braves would part with Travis d'Arnoud? Sure he's going to get $8 million next year and he'll be 34, but that could be money well spent. Lord knows the Brewers have outfielders in abundance to offer the Braves.

  8. I think Turang is the shortstop, Adames moves to 3B, and Urias is the 2B barring a deal or FA signing. I don't want my prized rookie having to adjust to a new position while he's also adjusting to major league pitching.

  10. "Usually reliable Hunter Renfroe"? He's terrible going back on balls, often covering for this weakness by simply letting balls go over his head and turning to play them off the wall. One of the reasons the Red Sox were willing to part with him were the 12 errors he had for them last season. Granted a lot of those were throwing errors, but he doesn't cover a lot of ground either. As for Adames, he's turned in to an all or nothing guy with the bat and has accuracy issues throwing. I'm beginning to think Turang may indeed end up sticking at SS. It wasn't just the loss of Hader, the new guys have been underwhelming so far. But remember, this was a team that lost 8 in a row in early June and looked bad doing it with Hader. Once that happened it was only a matter of time when a similar stretch would return. They were bad going into the break as well. I was never all that confident that they would hold off the Cardinals or play well enough to make the playoffs. I'm less optimistic now.
  11. There's more than Hiura and McCutcheon on this team who's best position is DH. Renfroe's got a strong but often not accurate arm but he's a butcher in the outfield and when he's not hitting home runs, he's of little value. He simply can't track a fly ball that is hit over his head.
  12. Laureano has a higher OPS and BA at home this year. He peaked as a hitter in 2018. He's hitting .146 in his last 11 games. Why mess with a lineup that's clicking on all cylinders right now including Taylor? If Peterson is going to be out more than a couple more weeks, the need is for a LH bat.

  14. Agreed. I think Urias in particular has been awful along with Wong and I'd give him no better than a D.
  15. You are overlooking the one ability that Tellez has over every other bat in the lineup. It's AVAILABILITY. He's been available every day. Same can't be said for anyone else save Yelich but his back flaring up is just a matter of time and Peterson who's great as a super utility guy but not so much playing everyday. Rowdy's negative is that he's streaky but he's the only guy opposing teams really fear even if it's only when he's hot. This team has struggled offensively because guys continue to get hurt doing normal baseball things. I've never seen players so susceptible to ankle sprains and calf strains. Ankle sprains are a given in basketball, but baseball? Seems they are avoidable. Maybe our starting SS doesn't need to prove he has a good vertical jump and just stay on the ground when he's congratulating a teammate.

  17. 82 was great with lots of great memories, but for me for whatever reason it was the weekend sweep of the Yankees in late July 1979 that stands out as the most memorable series in County Stadium. Series featured full houses every game, and plenty of fireworks with brawls in the Friday and Sunday games, and a pounding of the Yankees in between when Sixto Lezcano was at the zenith of his short lived career. Reggie Jackson was the main villain in the first brawl going after Mike Caldwell, and Lou Piniella along with former Brewer Mike Ferraro (then the Yankee 3rd base coach) the villains on Sunday after Piniella spiked Jim Gantner sliding into 3rd. Sadly Thurman Munson would perish just a few days later. Can't forget the 3 homer game by Cecil Cooper in the opener including a walk off.
  18. My memories of Charlie Moore was that despite his lack of power, he was always a very tough out with the game on the line. He sprayed the ball all over and was very difficult to defense and he often put good wood on in even against the best closers of the day. I always felt confident with him up there late in games and he often came through.
  19. They have a doubleheader Monday in Chicago. Sunday's starter in St. Louis is TBA. I'll bet my lunch money that Small starts one of those games. They get an extra roster spot for Monday, so my guess he goes Monday so it may just be a one off, but if he performs well, he will likely be back up soon taking the role Ashby had as 6th starter/multiple inning reliever.

  21. When you were at a game that Sorenson was pitching, you never had to worry about a 4 hour game. He did what pitchers today won't do. He actually threw most of his pitches in the strike zone. He didn't strike many out because he didn't try to. He got guys out without shifts too. He made the hitter hit his way on. When he was on, he had enough sink to keep the ball on the ground and he gave up singles, not doubles and home runs. Oh and if he got to 2 strikes which was rare, he still threw strikes instead of trying to get guys to swing at bad pitches. I miss that type of baseball. Games were much more fun to watch.

  25. Ok, they've loaded up with RH bats. Except that last season, other than Hiura, the RH bats performed rather well. Adames, Urias, Taylor, Pina and Garcia all had decent seasons. They seem to have adequately replaced Garcia and Pina with Renfroe and Severino, and they already had Taylor to take some of the AB's that went to Bradley On the other hand except for Wong when he was healthy, a strong first half by Navarez and a third of a year by Tellez, some timely hitting by Peterson, the LH bats greatly underachieved. Bradley, Yelich, Shaw and Vogelbach all underachieved to one extent or another and Navarez had a lousy second half. Unless you count Dahl, they haven't added a significant LH bat, There's a lot of pressure on Tellez and Yelich to provide power from the left side. I would have preferred a corner OF/DH to provide LH power. In a perfect world, that would have been Schwarber but there were other cheaper guys that fit that bill as well.
