  1. One thing that puzzled me with Black is that when he did come up, they batted him 3rd for more than half his plate appearances. What were they thinking? That seemed ludicrous. If they're going to give him any extended role as DH/1B, it's got to be at or near the bottom of the order until he shows he can handle major league pitching. I've never thought of him as a guy with a high ceiling but maybe he can produce enough to be a productive hitter. But if you asked me who I'd prefer in that role, Black or bringing back Bauers, I'd take Bauers in a heartbeat.
  2. The Brewers have never used up their entire budget this early. Maybe all they can do is "bargain hunt" but last year they found some significant bargains. For instance, I'd be totally on board if they picked up a guy like Donovan Solano who's price will be more based on his advanced age than his production. That guy has shown no sign of dropping off as a hitter and he can play some 3B, 1B, and DH.
  3. Perkins slugged .332 last year and Frelick slugged .335. As good as they are defensively, they can really only afford having one of those two in the lineup with no Adames in the middle of it. They have to add slug somewhere. Adding a Grichuk, gives them 6 players for 4 spots, assuming Frelick stays in the OF. That's not a problem. It's a strength. It also doesn't preclude them from finding a bat to cover 3rd if a good option is available. There's also nothing stopping them from dealing Perkins perhaps even in a deal to get a 3B. They had a similar logjam last winter and dealt Taylor.
  4. I was 11 years old in 1964 and saw Carty play several times that year and in 65. Great hitter. The lineup they had in 65 with Aaron, Matthews, Carty, Felipe Alou, Joe Torre, Mack Jones, Gene Oliver and Denis Menke should have won the NL, but GM John McHale who was part of the ownership group, didn't do nearly enough to fortify a pitching staff that was good at the top with Tony Cloninger, Wade Blasingame and Ken Johnson but needed reinforcements down the stretch to hold off the pitching rich Dodgers. The last thing McHale and Brave owners wanted was for that team to make the World Series and shine the light on Milwaukee when the team was packed and ready to move to Atlanta
  5. I think the Brewers are serious about moving Frelick to 3B. With Yelich return and Mitchell healthy, they'll want all 3 in lineup vs. RHP. They could have interest in Urshela to see considerable time at 3B too as a guy in their price range with some value.
  6. But they could have added veterans to take AB's from the young hitters that are struggling. They did that last year when they added Canha, Santana and gave Taylor additional starts. It's not uncommon for young hitters to struggle in the heat of a race. Replacing Monasterio on the roster with a quality veteran would allow Murphy to sit Ortiz and Turang more as both have tailed off considerably. With Yelich out, they certainly have room to add a veteran OF to the mix who's better than Bauers.
  7. I certainly don't see Montas as an upgrade over Junis much less his being worth giving up on Wiemer to a division rival no less. Wiemer is still young enough to explode into an offensive force. I get he might be helped by a change of scenery but not in the division.
  8. A rumor was spread at the time that Lezcano acted oddly when he became mired in the worst slump of his career in 1980. I won't get into the details because that was a long time ago and I'm not sure I recall all the details. Let's just say the coaches became frustrated with him. He was a big fan favorite and a great player and suddenly it all went away. He was in a huge slump when a broken hand ended his season in 1980. He ended up in the Simmons/Vukovich deal.
  9. The article doesn't even mention Joey Ortiz. The gap between him and Monasterio is enormous. Ortiz and Chourio are emerging stars with Ortiz further along. When Ortiz went down, the offense suffered. He needs time off occasionally too, but his bat needs to be in the lineup.
  10. I'm in agreement with all who think the time to pinch hit for Chourio is over for good. Also the time for using Payamps in high leverage situations should be on hold. What the heck's wrong with Hudson? He's thrown 2 innings in the last 8 days?
  11. Keuchel was done in 2022. Nothing he's done since then convinces me he belongs in the major leagues much less part of a contender's rotation. What we saw today is what he is.
  12. Carlos Rodriguez (the Nashville pitcher) has had a terrific month of May. He's 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA, 21 Ks vs. 4 BB and a .190 BAA. If you count his last April start, he's won 4 starts in a row.
  13. Frelick's numbers last year were nothing to write home about. There was no bigger myth about this Brewer team than it's supposed outfield depth. Depth, really? They hoped Chourio was ready. So they traded away one veteran (Taylor), and didn't bring in one veteran OF to compete for a job. Frelick has 6 extra base hits in over 150 PA. That's basically the guy he was after a fast start last year. Sure they could send Chourio down, but who's their alterative? The best hitting outfielder not named Yelich is Bauers, and against RH pitching he should be in the lineup but it's looking right now like he's more needed at 1B. Wiemer doesn't seem like he's an improvement over his 23 form, and besides he's hurt. Perkins started off on fire, but he's hitting .125 in May with an OPS under .500. That leaves career minor leaguer Brewer Hicklen who struck out over 200 times in AAA in 2022 or Owen Miller who's outfield experience is limited, but at least he has stretches of being a decent major league bat. He also could fill in at 1B and that would allow Bauers to play a corner outfield spot. Mitchell has a tremendous opportunity once he returns.
  14. I don't get the hate for Bauers. His OPS+ of 92 is significantly higher than Dunn, Chourio and Frelick. He's a defensive wizard at first base but still adequate in the corner outfield too. I'd argue that their best lineup includes Bauers albeit down near the bottom. He's certainly an upgrade over last year's and this year's version of Tellez
  15. Bryse Wilson was once a top 100 prospect with the Braves. Since becoming a Brewer, he's had a WHIP of 1.038 in 106 innings. He's allowed a mere 6.6 hits per 9. I think it's safe to say he's made improvements, but the raw talent has always been there. He's settled into a starter role quite nicely. Much like Wilson, I could easily see a scenario where Hudson gets stretched out into a starter. You can dwell on the negative (oh the pitching is only average), but we've seen that when there's a healthy Yelich in the lineup, this is clearly a better offensive team than they've had the last several seasons. Contreras is a legit MVP candidate. Turang to this point deserves All Star consideration. Hoskins and Sanchez can go deep at any moment. There's a concern the pen is being overworked, but the guy who's now the closer, Megill, has only logged a total of 8 2/3 innings.
  16. Hoskins has 113 lifetime home runs against RH pitching. That's way more than all the LH bats currently on the active roster combined. Sanchez has 125 against RH pitching. Opposing teams don't respect the LH bats the Brewers are putting in the lineup. They aren't exactly tearing apart RH pitching.
  17. I don't see any scenario where this outfield is too crowded. They were forced to bring up Wiemer who was batting .220 at AAA when Yelich went down. They really haven't come close to replacing Yelich. Hopefully, he'll be back and productive. Do we really have any idea on how Mitchell will do? The guy will have missed a full season and a third of another. They have guys with options they can use if somehow everyone starts being productive. Right now the outfield production is well below par.
  18. Reds released Mike Ford off their Louisville roster. All Ford did in 2023 in 219 AB's for Seattle was hit 16 HR, slug .475, and post an OPS+ of 121. In AAA, he's posted an OPS of .920. Given the lack of production from Bauers, Ford would seem to be a good fit on a Brewer team that's overloaded with rookie and 2nd year guys.
  19. Why is Murphy "protecting" Contreras with Tyler Black, a rookie in his first week in the majors batting behind him? Black has no business batting 3rd in a major league lineup. Maybe someday he will but this is not it. I know that Yelich's absence creates a huge hole in the lineup, but Hoskins and Adames are proven major league power bats and given the current makeup of the team, Adames should be batting 3rd, Hoskins 4th and Sanchez 5th as primary DH. Yeah, that means we sacrifice some of the speed, but those guys aren't getting on base and they still have spots 6-9 and leadoff to put the speed in the lineup. While we're at it, if LH bats aren't hitting, stop the platooning already. Ortiz had been showing signs of life and he hasn't been in the lineup in forever. Same goes for Sanchez.
  20. You send him down because when Yelich returns the 3 best OF right now are Yelich, Perkins and Frelick. Chourio needs to play almost every day regardless of level. The case can be made that minor league teams exist for the purpose of developing major league players but major league teams object is to win as many games as possible, particularly a team currently leading their division. A strong case could also be made that Black deserves the spot currently held by Dunn, but I suspect Brewer brass prefers Black playing every day.
  21. "Crowded outfield" is a complete misnomer. There's actually very little outfield depth at the major league level or the system in general. Chourio may be a future star, but he's lost right now. He should be at AAA. Wiemer was overmatched by major league pitching last year and he's become more a suspect than a prospect. Mitchell can't stay healthy. Frelick is a decent outfielder but more suited to a 4th or 5th OF because of his lack of power. Yelich's rebound has been stopped cold with back issues returning. It looked like he was back to his MVP form, but when he returns, who knows? None of what's happened with this group should be a surprise. It was all fairly predictable. Perkins has been outstanding for the first month, and who knows where they'd be without him but can he be a quality everyday outfielder? Meanwhile, the guy everyone couldn't wait to unload has the 3rd highest WAR on the Mets as a part time player. To quote Ron Darling, the other day on a Mets telecast, "they've got to find a way to get Taylor in the lineup as much as possible".
  22. I don't understand the value of optioning a reliever the manager trusts in high leverage situations because he's not available for one day just to cover a meaningless inning or two in a game that's a blowout.
  23. Koenig was a starter most of his minor league career. As recently as 2022 he made 18 starts at AAA and 5 more with Oakland. He's gone multiple innings in 3 of his 5 appearances. Could it be he's being groomed to take Wilson's role in the pen and Wilson will settle in a rotation spot at least until Gasser is deemed ready which shouldn't be too long. But maybe Koenig can be stretched out?
  24. Frelick made the biggest defensive mistake of the season when he misplayed the De La Cruz single into an inside the park HR. Since then, he's looked hesitant whether it's been in CF or LF. Hoskins hasn't been great but Bauers has been so smooth by comparison at 1B it makes Hoskins look worse than he is.
  25. I agree that Wiemer move is a mistake, but I would have brought up Owen Miller, not Hicklen. Bauers has started 90 big league games in LF and Miller has played there a few times too. Either fill a spot in the order better than Wiemer.
