  1. When the rest of the lineup was hitting they could afford a hole at the top. They no longer have that luxury.
  2. Because he's been the most consistent hitter on the roster since mid May and you want your best hitters getting the most plate appearances? What's so hard to understand? The top 4 should be Arcia, Santana, Braun and Shaw. If someone else gets hot, and one of those 4 cools down considerably then make another change. It's not rocket science. What's nonsensical is not moving Arcia up because that would somehow put too much pressure on him. My goodness, Arcia exudes condidence.
  3. If they had one move to make, the guy I'd get is Dennard Span. He's got an OPS of .802 vs. RHP. He also has a funky backloaded contract which if they took it on would mean the return in talent would be minimal. He's cooled off since a hot June, but he's not the type of guy that strikes out much even when the hits aren't falling in. They could still use Broxton vs. LHP and as late inning defensive replacement and on days where Braun rests and Span slides over to LF. Span would make an ideal 4th OF, albeit an expensive one, for 2018 as well. But I still like the idea of Bruce. Somehow I'm still not totally sold that Santana won't crater at some point and he's been slumping over the past week. Plus Braun's power outage has me concerned too. Mix in a thumper like Bruce to the mix and they could all take off.
  4. Nobody knew Molitor was a future Hall of Famer in 1977. Nobody. The way the Brewers franchise works today, Molitor would have likely not been seen in Milwaukee until 81 or 82.
  5. Arcia is the best player on the roster and I'm not the only one who thinks that. He believes that. He doesn't let a little tough stretch affect him. You make a huge mistake equating him to Segura. They are different individuals.
  6. There is a good chance is bat is ready right now. He could be the most ready to hit player drafted by the Brewers since Molitor. To refresh everyone's memory Molitor played all of 64 minor league games, all in the Midwest League the year he was drafted, and hit .346/.457/.504. He was in starting lineup for Brewers on opening day the next season and never looked back. Hiura's hitting .375/.416/.542 in that same league. Guy's a natural hitter. Much like Molitor was.
  7. The Brewers had their hottest hitter batting 9th over the weekend. Counsell might have the hardest head in baseball.
  8. Perez is just as good as Kinsler. Broxton is just as good as Granderson. We need one more stud in the lineup, not just another mediocre guy. In a stretch where every game is meaningful guys like Perez and Broxton can feel the pressure and not perform to their normal levels. This team could certainly use another vet who's been through it. The acquisition of Vogt didn't mean they were giving up on Bandy but they knew his experience was valuable. Same goes for a guy like Granderson or a Phillips. It's a race to the finish line now. It's not development time.
  9. I kind of get that but can't he squeeze in a run? Pina hit it hard but that took all the pressure off. Barnes decision was dumbfounding. Hughes could have coughed it up too but at least he was fresh. Or go with Knebel. Hader still in witness protection. Barnes has been their worst reliever not named Drake since the break.
  10. If Santana's injury is significant, Stearns better go out and get Bruce.
  11. While sticking with Brinson has some merit, I still think adding a veteran OF bat that can play CF makes sense. Even if Brinson gets going ( and some recent signs are good) they still need protection in the corner spots. Granderson has reportedly cleared waivers. His presence as a late inning bench option is a huge upgrade over Villar and the version of Sogard we've seen the last month.
  12. Not a bad idea. He's hitting .329/.351/.500 since the All Star break. Would be very comparable to the Ray Durham acquisition in 2008. Either that or settle on Perez at 2B from here on out and get a veteran OF to spell Braun and add to bench.
  13. He pitched his way out of trouble. It was no fluke. All 7 hits he allowed were singles against a lineup that included 4 guys with 20+ HR. In today's game if you don't get extra base hits, you have trouble scoring. Some of those were dinkers that fell in. He was in complete command after the 2nd. The trouble in the 3rd was due to error by Shaw. He couldn't have been more impressive. His "misses" inside were nasty and unhittable. But his stuff (fastball was 93-95 all night) is good enough that he doesn't need to be pinpoint all the time. He flashed a good slider and a nasty changeup as well. I had the Rays' telecast on in the first. They were raving that for a rookie in his first major league start that he had tremendous mound presence and didn't look like a rookie usually looks in his first start. He didn't seem rattled at all with men on base. Couldn't agree more. Former Rays pitcher Doug Waechter also raved about him in their postgame show.
  14. Vogt is expected back within 2 weeks. At that time Susac will be sent back down. If Bandy is healthy, he'll be back up in September and since he'll be coming off the DL he'd still be postseason eligible if they choose that route. Can't see the need for more than 3 catchers so Susac will likely be limited to 3-4 starts max.
  15. I can see the Brewers bringing back Swarzak. He's in his 30's and not a premier closer, so the price won't be outrageous. He can't expect more than a 2 year deal I imagine either. Torres isn't likely to be back so it's pretty logical for the Brewers to try and keep Swarzak. The big market teams will focus elsewhere.
  16. Jake Arrieta was on The Score earlier in this week and the host asked him about Suter. You know the usual why more pitchers don't try that approach if it keeps hitters off balance. Arrieta responded by saying besides the pace that though he doesn't have big velocity that Suter gets movement and is tough to square up. In short, his "stuff" is better than he gets credit for because he commands it well and his fastball has cutting action on it. That and a breaking ball he can throw in any count and a good changeup.
  17. Hader is supposed to have a change he uses only against RH hitters. Either he hasn't needed it or would break it out the second time through. Should be a priority in the spring. Woodruff was terrific. I think a six man rotation is in order when Anderson returns.
  18. Jay Bruce has cleared waivers. Not a need but a rotation of Braun, Santana and Bruce in the corners? He's always enjoyed Miller Park.
  19. He's been compared by some to Chris Sale. Even if he's not quite to that level, elite starters are hard to find. They have to give him a shot. Bullpen is the fall back.
  20. Woodruff's start lines up with bullpen session scheduled today for Anderson. My guess is Anderson gets one rehab start Wednesday and returns on August 13. If Woodruff shines in his 2 starts, maybe they go with 6 man rotation in September like they did last year.
  21. Perez can give them offensively what Kintzler can do these days. Ideally they could find a taker for Villar for anything, bring Phillips up and make Perez the primary 2B. Then let Sogard be the infield utility guy.
  22. Wrong! Scooter's 2016 OPS was .728. No one, and I mean NO ONE could have seen the kind of numbers he's putting up this year. Hindsight is 20/20 though, I guess. You forget I'm still around? Maybe .900 is impressing even me but I've always thought Gennett was a very solid hitter. Heck he posted an .834 OPS as a 23 year old rookie in 2013 in a not so tiny sample of 230 PA. Compare that with the struggles of their highly rated guys now.
  23. Well Rene Garcia has posted an OPS of .809 between AAA and AA this year. Personally I could live without Espino on the 40 man.
  24. Maybe, maybe not. San Diego cornered the market on low level FA last year and got 3 guys all for $1.75 million, Richard, Cahill and Chacin. For a good team Garza would be a depth guy and come to camp as a 6th or 7th starter. They won't pay $5 million for a depth piece. A rebuilding team like the White Sox could take a flier and hope to recoup some value though they might prefer to sign some guys to minor league deals or for under $3 million. The Brewers will likely have Nelson, Davies, Anderson as the big 3. They need room for their guys knocking on the door in their system. I don't think they'll pick up his option. Richard, Cahill, Chacin haven't been full time starters the past 3yrs or so while also consistently battling injuries. Garza's been a starter his entire career and, when healthy, has always put up solid numbers just like he's doing this year. The past 2yrs he's been hit with one injury after another. His 2015 was terrible. Last year he had a 3.41 ERA over 16 of his 19 starts and this year he's been rock solid thus far. Those other guys don't compare to Garza at all. There's a 0% chance his option isn't picked up. Whether he's still a Brewer next year remains to be seen but he'll be making 5M for someone pitching every 5th day because that production at that price is a very good contract. This is the same team that dumped it's everyday 2B for the previous 3 and a half seasons because he was making a little over $2 million. Garza's not in the plans for next year and the market for him just isn't there.
