  1. I suspect if he ends the season with and OPS of .610, he'll be non-tendered. But until that point they'll keep giving him chances no doubt because other than the aforementioned journeyman types, they really don't have his replacement ready unless they move Perez out of his handyman role to full timer at 2B.
  2. There's a lot more to be concerned about, mainly the fact that Thames hasn't hit a ball hard in weeks.
  3. Comparing Villar to Hall is an insult to Hall, who at least had two very good seasons (05 and 06) but the point is valid nonetheless. If all it took were one or two outstanding seasons to be a Hall of Famer, Sixto Lezcano would have a plaque in Cooperstown. There's something to be said for putting up respectable numbers year after year even if you are perceived as expendable.
  4. He's a 31 year old journeyman who had a hot week. He should be getting almost no playing time. Villar needs to get hot to be considered a journeyman at this point. We're nearly a third of the way into the season and he's hitting .214. It's a better lineup with Sogard in it. By the way, Scooter's OPS is now at .854. Just sayin.
  5. Cubs lose again! To the Padres no less!
  6. Brewers could really use a lefty power arm out of their pen. Harder is a logical choice as he's already on the 40 man. It says less about his eventual role (Sale relieved in his first go around in the big leagues) and more about the Brewer strategy for competing this year using the talent on hand.
  7. No Espino isn't blocking him. They needed a guy for one start, so Espino made sense. If a starter goes down for a lengthy period or they trade a starter, then it's between Woodruff and Hader. Eventually we could see a 6 man rotation at some point later in the year too.
  8. Drake has to be in thin ice. Say what you want about Scahill but he's efficient.
  9. My choice would be to DL Thames. DFA Franklin and Reed to clear space, and bring up Cooper and Wren. Why not Phillips? 52 K's in 148 AB's at AAA. Whoever they brought up won't see a ton of action, so go with the two guys most likely to at least put balls in play vs. major league pitching in a limited role.
  10. His leg issue whatever it is doesn't seem to be improving. It seems like a month since he barreled up a ball too. I give him credit for trying to fight through it but he's moving like a guy my age and I'm 64.
  11. Garrett Cooper's May numbers: .414/.457/.700, 5 HR, 22 RBI, and just 8 K's in 70 AB's
  12. Why leave out Cooper who's had the hottest bat at AAA all year? He did play LF in 23 games last year and he has a higher OPS on the road (1.102) than he does at home (.876). Now if this injury was season ending, sure bring up Brinson. But it's an aggravation of a minor injury not involving a joint. DFA Franklin and add Cooper and give him some starts in LF. See what you have.
  13. Garrett Cooper "deserves" the call more than anyone at AAA and he played some in LF last year. But my guess is nobody gets the call. They'll just use the spot for Guerra.
  14. Braun hates playing in spring training games too. Getting him to play in minor league games even harder.
  15. It's pretty clear to me what he's saying. Let me translate:. If we are in position to win this year and there are moves that will improve our chances then we will make them but not at the expense of sacrificing any players in our system that we have identified as future parts of our core. I think both the owner and GM are in total agreement with that strategy. I agree 100%. Seems that Stearns is saying that if he can make minor moves that do not destory the farm he will. However, he is not going to abort the rebuild or sacrifice the farm for one shot in 2017. I'd say they have a list of a dozen or so prospects they won't move regardless. But they don't just have prospects that can be used in deals. They have controllable guys on the major league roster too.
  16. It's pretty clear to me what he's saying. Let me translate:. 17. Really, Scahill? Hughes has a WHIP of 1.773, and Drake also has a higher WHIP than Scahill. So does Torres. Scahill's WHIP as a Brewer is 1.186. Forget Scahill's career numbers which aren't horrific by any means. Almost half his major league innings were as a Colorado Rockie.
  18. Biggest risers on my list through nearly 2 months: Burnes who has to be nearing the top 10, and Gatewood.
  19. Why not? Anderson can't get through 5 innings. He's lost the feel of his secondary pitches to the tune of an 1.148 OPS against in his last four starts. Doesn't he still have an option too? I can understand being patient with him if they didn't have a guy at AAA who's showed command. It's not like Woodruff is 21 or 22. He's 24.
  20. Why? I'm not sure Woodruff outpitches Anderson who's been average. He's got a .322 BABIP against which his .20 above his career. Everything else is about normal for him. Eventually those grounders will turn into outs. They are just finding holes (yesterday notwithstanding). If he was horrible then maybe you make a move. The Padres even hit Anderson. Right now he is the one on the hotseat. But he still gets at least two more starts, imo. What is safe threshold for Super 2? In 2007, Braun was held back to avoid Super 2 status, and he came up on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. I'd say Anderson is on a very short leash.
  21. Time for Woodruff to take Anderson's spot?
  22. Gatewood to AA?
  23. Maddon claimed he spent the afternoon in his apartment and didn't realize it had stopped raining. My guess is he never was at Wrigley Saturday because the plan was hatched Friday to postpone the game. When did they call it? Right before it essentially stopped altogether. They had to call it before it actually stopped of course, which is why they did it when they did.
  24. Anyone with a smart phone could see that what rain they had yesterday had moved through and behind it was nothing. Len Kasper used the forecast excuse. Really Len? It's 2017. Weather radar is universally available.
