  1. Garza's (end of the?) line today: 2 1/3 IP, 5 Hits, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
  2. Who says Shaw plays everyday? They've played lip service to that, but they did that in the past with Gennett and then platooned him exclusively. I expect we'll see a lot of Perez at 3B against LHP. Nieuwenhuis will see a lot of action in RF, not in a pure platoon, but Santana has struggled vs. RHP in the past and when he's not going good, Counsell won't hesitate sitting him especially since Santana is a defensive liability.. Agree Gennett gets starts in LF when Braun sits, but Scooter is still going to get starts at 2nd base too. Villar is a weaker hitter from the left side, plus Arcia isn't starting everyday at SS. Will Aguilar mostly platoon with Thames? Depends on how Thames does. No reason not to protect him vs. tough lefties but he will get a chance to prove himself first.
  3. My 12 pitchers are Guerra, Davies, Peralta, Nelson, Anderson, Feliz, Knebel, Torres, Marinez, Scahill, either Cravy or Jungmann, and either Milone or Suter. Scahill deserves a spot not just on what he's done in Arizona. He was solid in September and should have kept a 40 man spot. Now he'll get Garza's..
  4. Barnes (12.71 ERA. 2.82 WHIP) may have pitched himself off the opening day roster, and Jungmann (1.59 ERA. 0.97 WHIP)may have pitched his way on. Cravy and Scahill look like keepers as well.
  5. While ownership and management have publicly stated that 2017 year is another rebuilding year, players don't look at it that way and trading your announced opening day starter a week before the season is unsettling unless the return is perceived as having some immediate or at the least substantial impact in the very near future. If Guerra performs this year as he did in 2016, either of two things will happen. Most obvious is he'll become an even more attractive trade chip at this year's deadline, or he'll help put the Brewers in position to make noise this year, something that shouldn't be dismissed out of hand before a game has been played. If he performs poorly, it will be disappointing, but it's not like the Brewers are void of talent in their system right now as it is.
  6. He needs to take a bigger view. He was awful last year. He's lucky to still have a spot on the 40 man. He still might not hold on to that if they need a spot for Scahill who's been outstanding this spring.
  7. Nelson with a very strong outing today. Anderson and Peralta have had good springs. I just don't buy the rationale that Garza is a better option than any of Guerra, Davies, Nelson, Anderson, or Peralta. Garza still might be adequate back end starter, but his potential trade value is minimal. Having Garza stick around as reliever? The Cubs did that with Edwin Jackson in 2015 and he didn't do badly but they still released him a couple months in to give opportunities to other guys.
  8. Brewers do have the lowest ERA in the Cactus League and the 2nd lowest WHIP. Combined with the best offense all of baseball this spring, there's certainly reason for optimism. I'm most worried about the pen. They didn't give away games late last year. If they start doing that this year, it will affect the entire team.
  9. Guerra's 32 but his arm doesn't have half the innings in it that most guys his age have. A solid year of an ERA in the 3.50 range will only enhance his value for next winter as that would confirm his status as at worst a solid number 3 controllable starter. Trading your opening day pitcher less than two weeks before a season is unprecedented. Stearns needs to be blown away and not accept simply another prospect who'll be behind guys they already have.
  10. Arcia doesn't have to hit a lot but if he's struggling with an OPS of under .600 well into the season and the rest of the team isn't making up for it, they can still option him out, move either Villar or Perez to SS and boost the offense albeit at the expense of some defense at a key spot. Point is this spring, if anything, shows they should have alternatives. If for instance Santana's struggling vs. RHP, as he has in the past, then he can sit in favor of either Kirk or Hernan or even Scooter. Same goes with splits at 3B and 1B for the LH hitters. Either Bandy or Pina should provide more offense than Maldanado did in the past. Yeah Luc is gone but presumably they are more settled in CF, RF, and and the bench than they were a year ago when CF was a gaping hole and the bench was populated by guys like Walsh, Rivera, Presley and Flores, and Santana was less proven and ultimately injured with no reliable backup at least until they stuck Perez out there.
  11. What's positive about this team is that they could insert guys like Perez, Gennett, and Aguillar for any "regulars" who are struggling and still get starting caliber production with possibility of midseason contributions from the likes of Brinson that could equal or exceed what they start the year with.
  12. Thru 24 spring games the Brewers lead all of MLB in the following offensive categories: BA, OBP, SP, OPS, Runs, HR, Walks, Caught stealing. Meaningless of course but this team should be capable of scoring runs. Are they the second coming of Bambi's Bombers? Probably not but hey the 78 team that ushered in the golden era of Brewer baseball wasn't all that highly thought of heading into that season either.
  13. Kirk has been red hot over the last couple weeks so he appears secure but Perez handled CF pretty well when he was out there.
  14. Braves hats with the M are acceptable. No other MLB though.
  15. Off days schedule line up in such a way that Jimmy didn't get game action. Nelson's potential trade value far, far exceeds Garza's at this point. It would be foolish to not give him a mulligan for the last 3-4 months of 2016. If he's that guy again, replace him with Hader or Jungmann or Milone. It's just time to move on from Garza.
  16. The other starters all have better potential for return in a deal than Garza. It's that simple. Beyond that though, based on how they are using guys this spring, it's pretty obvious that Garza is 6th right now and this thread is a prediction of what they will do not an opinion of what they should do. Even if Garza pitched OK, he still won't be high on teams lists for an upgrade at the deadline.
  17. He's better than Blazek though Scahill might be better than both.. Garza's roster spot will be available too.
  18. You are very close. Only changes I would make are Milone and either Scahill/Chamberlain over Suter and Blazek. All signs are pointing to Garza not making the final cut.
  19. How many times have guys had great springs to make a team only to start a year 0 for 20? That being said, I don't see both Aguilar and Rivera making the team. It could be Aguilar vs. keeping a 13th pitcher. Perez can play adequate SS for a day a week. If Arcia's bat is in question, why replace him with a lesser bat? Could we see an all RH lineup vs. LHP on occasion? They'd have that option with Aguilar.
  20. "I really don't think Italy in the WBC is a true Italian team..." Well neither is The Netherlands or Isreal. The Netherlands roster is full of guys from Dutch colonies in the Lesser Antillies. That's a long way from Amsterdam. By that standard the entire Puerto Rican team should be playing for the U.S. At least Puerto Rico is close to the U.S.
  21. Keep an eye on the Kipnis situation in Cleveland. He's got a sore shoulder and could miss their opener. Doesn't sound bad but you never know. If it turns out to be worse than expected, Gennett could be a target for them.
  22. What was it about Thornburg's performance in 2016 that makes the Red Sox want to make a drastic change in his routine? Not every athlete responds well to a one size fits all program. Ultimately it's his body and his career. Seems to me they are playing with fire.
  23. I'm Augie's age so I'll translate his key point from yesterday: "Garza has to pitch himself into the rotation this spring and he knows it. Right now he's the odd man out. Yesterday didn't help his cause." He tried to spin it positively so the message got garbled but he's right on both counts.
  24. The terrible report of cancer spreading for Rockies starter Chad Bettis could have them in the market for a starter, something the Brewers still appear to have in excess. They could do a bad contract for bad contract (Garza for Parra) deal if the total dollars can be evened out, or offer say Nelson for prospects. Parra, on balance despite his rather roller-coaster career, is a better player than Nieuwenhuis offensively...so a marginal upgrade there. Not sure what kind of value Nelson has but he has some.
  25. Nieuwenhuis who is off to a 1 for 16 start this spring with 7Ks is your lone other LH bat bench option. I think there's a chance he doesn't even make the team which is why I've lobbied for grabbing a better LH hitting OF option all winter. Until that happens, Gennett needs to stick around.
