  1. There's less of a gap between Alvarez' defense at 3B and an average defensive 3B, than the gap between his defense at 1B and an average 1B. You'd also get both Alvarez and Rogers in the lineup at the same time. But with the Brewer rotation having ground ball types, doesn't seem to be a great fit.
  2. Glad I'm not the only one seeing tremendous possible value in Chacin. Hope Brewer scouts on this guy. He's just the type the Pirates make hay with.
  3. Lambson looks to be a guy who's a nice fit to replace Strong in the system. He's certainly more advanced than Strong was at a similar age. Villegas looks like a guy similar to the 3 they got in the Lind deal only a few years later and who's development has been slow.
  4. The Brewers could play Josh Donaldson at third next year and not come close to making the playoffs. That's not the point with this move. Cecchini was highly regarded in the very recent past and the Brewers gave up nothing to see if he just had a bad year last year. Maybe he does end up sucking and washing out in AAA. Doesn't matter. The Brewers are in the position to see if he can put it back together. If he does, great. If not, oh well. Did you not read my post? I'm ecstatic. Seriously, I'm discouraged that the franchise has fallen to the level where this type of signing has all of you so pumped. Only the dregs of baseball take discarded pieces like Cecchini on the hope that maybe what he did most recently was a mirage. He really wasn't very good in 2014 either unless you consider a .712 OPS at AAA good. The trend is your friend and he's trending in the wrong direction. By the way, I'd like to take Donaldson and test your theory, paired with Arcia on the left side of the infield.
  5. Yeah, count me ecstatic at the prospect of a guy coming off a sub .600 OPS season at AAA being added to the mix. Watch out Cubs and Cardinals! Maybe playing in Colorado Springs he'll post a .650 OPS. I haven't been this excited since the Brewers signed Ben Grieve.
  6. I wouldn't be too worried if I'm Scooter that a guy who's already 26 (Scooter's 25) and barely has any experience above AA is going to take my job. For all we know they drafted Walsh to play 1B or 3B.
  7. Obvious command issues. They'll have a spring training to work with him to see if they can be fixed. If not just offer him back.
  8. Walsh looks like a nice fit. Switch hitter with positional versatility ala Villar. Primarily a 2B but has time at 3B and probably could move to 1B too. Downside is he's already 26 and spent all of last year in AA playing against mostly younger players. Late bloomer? Guessing Jones is a hard thrower with command issues worth a look. Hasn't had any success above A ball so a long shot to be sure.
  9. Bourn has been bad 3 years in a row, is expensive, has declining defensive metrics, and has a vesting option for 2017 at 550 plate appearances. If he continues to play poorly, we'd have to eat part of his contract just to get someone to take him off our hands. Acquiring bad contracts just to hope to flip them is a terrible strategy, if you end up not being able to flip them. Bourn still covers enough ground to help the pitching staff and his contract isn't that onerous when your payroll is currently sitting at $55 million.
  10. Then I am a bit concerned with Stearns as our GM. The kid has nothing left to prove in the minors with his bat. He strikes out a bit, but not at a concerning rate. Pretty sure they wouldn't be interested in the prospects of adding Gallo if holes in a swing concerned them. Nor should they. Gallo would be a disaster. Gallo is much closer to the second coming of Mike Olt or Matt Davidson than he is Kris Bryant or Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber has Gallo's power but actually also has the ability (and always has had) to put the bat on the ball with some regularity and while Bryant strikes out a lot, it's a lot less than Gallo would. Gallo's strikeout rate has been going up as he's gotten to higher levels. He's not going to suddenly learn how to make contact against big league pitching. Then there's the shifts he'll be hitting into when he does make contact. He still has youth on his side but the trends are not good. As much power as Gallo has, there's no way he can hit over .200 in the major leagues over time with as little contact as he makes and while he'll take some walks, and will post OBP that's quite a bit higher than his BA, it's still going likely fall below .300.
  11. Maybe the issue with Santana isn't so much his defense in CF but the holes in his swing.
  12. The problem with Rogers, and some of the other RH hitters being mentioned is that the lineup was already very right handed even with Lind. They just traded their lone power bat from the left side. No doubt Rogers is going to have a larger role this year but you can't construct a lineup against top of the line RH pitching with Gennett and Villar as the lone LH bats. Not that those two aren't decent offensive players, but you really need a thumper from the left side to break up the middle of the order. Alvarez fits very well as LH power bat, but defense is the issue. Then again the Pirate pitching staff survived having him there okay. I also don't think he'll come all that cheap or on a one or two year deal. Alvarez figures to want at least 3 years and at least $10-12 million per year, perhaps more.
  13. He needed to do a bit better than .291/.367/.492 apparently at hitter friendly Colorado Springs. He turns 29 tomorrow and that doesn't qualify as "somewhat young" either.
  14. Someone mention LaRoche fielding an issue? He's a gold glover compared to Alvarez. Jeesh. Lets see Pirates couldn't use him because his glove is that bad but Brewers can? Imagine the right side of the infield if Weeks was still around? Better make sure whoever is in the infield have accurate arms. Alvarez doesn't save many errors and commits a ton of his own.
  15. I like Counsell but I think he's a little too enamored by versatility and tends to like players who were like himself. When Ramirez was traded last year, it was the perfect opportunity to see what they had in 24 year old Hernan Perez at 3B. So what does Counsell do? He installs a career minor league utility player in as the left handed portion of a platoon there. Nothing against Elian Herrera who had his moments and isn't a bad utility player, but the franchise needed to look at any possible long term solutions at that position and Herrera certainly wasn't that whereas a 24 year old at least could conceivable be that guy. That's a missed opportunity both for Perez and the Brewers. So now we have Villar. Will Counsell move him all over the diamond or see if he's the solution at 3B?
  16. Now that Lind is officially gone, and Stearns has stated that they may acquire another 1B to pair with Rogers thought I'd start a thread on possibilities. Feel free to add names to the list: I'll start with a couple. One is Chris Parmelee. He's kind of the definition of replacement level, but that's about his floor too. On the plus side, his AAA numbers: .301/.392/.505 over quite a large sample size are actually pretty good and he'll still be just 28 next season. He is a LH bat too though his splits don't indicate he'd be a great platoon option. He's a FA so won't take anything to get him other than a very, very modest offer. With a real chance to compete for meaningful playing time, if I'm his agent, I'm on the phone with Stearns today. Second option is one I've mentioned before. White Sox would love to unload 36 year old Adam LaRoche and his remaining $13 million. LaRoche was indeed awful last year but was certainly serviceable the year before with Washington. One could make the case he didn't adjust well to a new league and the fact that more often than not he was DHing, which for some is a tough transition especially for an older player. Obviously it won't take much to get him depending on how much of his contract Chicago is willing to eat. Maybe they'd consider a bad contract swap for Garza. If somehow LaRoche regained his 2014 form, he'd certainly have some trade value in July as well. Heck he might bring another teenage arm or two. Even in his awful 2015, his splits vs. RHP were much better than vs. LHP. Career wise vs. LHP his OPS is a fine .831
  17. Look at it this way. There is more than enough salary room to bring Prince Fielder back. Maybe they'll make a run at Chris Davis now and corner the market on them. I know I'm dreaming but it's a lot better than reality.
  18. The return, if any, of this deal won't be known until 2022 or so. Odds are none of these guys has any impact but it's possible. It's a salary dump in the short term. Runs the projected payroll down to around $55 million, $12.5 of which is ticketed for Garza. I'm going to have to find something to do with my time during the evenings starting in April.
  19. Trading Lind, your lone impact left-handed bat, is an $8 million salary dump for 2015. Nothing more. They add young arms 4-5 years or more from a potential big league appearance. Big deal. That's going to make me run out and buy tickets? Going to be a lot easier on the RH pitchers in the division to see a Brewer lineup with no power lefty bat in it. Brewers looking more like a 100 loss team. Enjoy!
  20. Zunino not part of the deal per Heyman tweet. Thankfully. Stearns needs to hold out for a lefty arm.
  21. Jack Z was fired for drafting failures like Peterson and Zunino. Reminds me of old days when Bando lost his job for picking guys like Antone Williamson and Kyle Peterson (relation??). Zunino was supposed to be a finished product coming out of Florida. After all he was the 3rd overall pick. He's regressed since his rookie year. Peterson peaked in hitter friendly Cal League. I completely disagree...considering you don't know that the GM actually doesn't draft players, it is very hard to take your comment serious. Doesn't matter how ready you are suppose to be coming out of college. They gave him really 1 year from his first game after being drafted to develop into a MLB player. I don't care if you are picked #3 or not and went to college. That isn't how you develop players. GM's own the #1 picks, even if they don't "per se" run the draft. Bando was run out of town for missing on so many high picks.
  22. Won't matter if he doesn't hit he's not going to make it to Milwaukee.
  23. At this point, Peterson is not a Top 10 prospect for Milwaukee. I think you're right - maybe the 10-15 range. He was bad last year at AA (.636 OPS). He did okay in 2014 at AA - .808 OPS on 222 ABs - but you can't dismiss his struggles this year. I guess I'd compare Peterson to Tyrone Taylor. Both were Top 100 prospects (Peterson was as high as 50 on some charts), but both struggled at AA and the luster really went off both of them. Peterson at least looked okay in 2014, so there's hope he can rebound to that kind of production. I guess it comes down to the Brewer scouts seeing a guy that can be 'fixed' as opposed to a guy who just doesn't have the ability to be better. Taylor was in his first year at AA and his numbers last year weren't nearly as dismal as Peterson's who was repeating the level. Equally disturbing is Peterson's performance in the Arizona Fall League where he's hit a combined .190 the last two seasons. May I remind everyone that Scooter Gennett hit .411 in the AFL as a 21 year old. Actual hitting prospects tend to tear up that league.
  24. I'd rather this trade be official before "slotting" Peterson into the Top 10 Brewers prospects, but I would actually put Peterson at #4 behind Arcia, Phillips and Clark. Really #4? I had him close to that #40, a full 10 spots lower than Nick Ramirez.
