  1. Didn't the Brewers already try a year of Mark Reynolds? They need a LH bat at 1B, but I'd take Rogers over Carter.
  2. Flowers has a larger sample size and has outslugged Maldonado 376 to .338. There's really no way of knowing what Maldonado would do with 400 AB's. Point is if either Maldonado or Flowers is your main guy, you are in trouble, but no way should the Brewers just elevate Maldonado to an everyday player. They'd be better off having another veteran share the job if not be the nominal starter. He's not shown enough to deserve that even on a rebuilding club. Flowers has handled some pretty stout starting pitching for White Sox and he's got some power.
  3. Acquisition of Villar made Herrera redundant. Herrera's a handy guy that will probably end up on a roster somewhere next year. My guess is he looks at the organization that not only has Villar, but Rivera, Gennett, Segura, Arcia and Perez, and he will look elsewhere even he can't get a major league deal though I wouldn't rule that out.
  4. Well if Lucroy gets dealt, Tyler Flowers is now out there having been non-tendered. They could do worse for a stop guy type.
  5. The Brewers have plenty of RH hitters in their lineup. They could use some thunder from the left side. Problem with Alvarez is he's historically bad defensively at 1B to the point that Pittsburgh wants desperately to move him so I can't see the Brewers taking him as alternative to Lind. He's merely bad at 3B where maybe his power would overcome his weak glove but I don't think Stearns will want to make life harder than it needs to be on his young pitchers with a defensive stiff like Alvarez in the infield. No, I think we are going to see Villar on opening day at 3B unless they are facing a lefty in which case Perez could be at 3B and Villar at 2B.
  6. Villar to 2B and Perez playing 3B vs. LHP is how I'd go. Though it's still laughable to me how last year they were going to play Scooter full time and ended up giving him one start all year against a LHP. Gennett destroyed LHP in his stint in AAA last year, and that apparently meant nothing. Eventually between Villar and Perez, one will emerge as an everyday option at 3B.
  7. Sort of makes eating $25 million to get rid of Garza not seem like such a bad idea. Apparently baseball money and the real world are two different things. Sooner or later the gravy train has to stop doesn't it? ESPN just laid off a bunch of staff in part because they overpaid for MLB rights. Will the networks finally learn?
  8. There's a handful of teams that logically could have some interest in Lind because he would represent a modest improvement over what they have. But there's also other guys those teams are looking at like Morneau or Loney. As for teams seeking a DH, throw Pedro Alvarez into the mix. Teams just don't want to pay a lot in terms of dollars and players for one season of modest improvement at one position.
  9. Re-upping Hernan to a AAA contract could prove to be the best move made this offseason. His picture should be next to the term "latent power" in the baseball dictionary.
  10. He'd be blocking Villar, the guy they just traded for, not to mention Perez, both of whom are 24 and if you put them in the KBO, they'd likely put up huge numbers.
  11. I believe Brewers would love to trade Segura, but they might roll the dice with him for the start of the year given a soft market for him and hope a couple hot months with increase his value.
  12. Do you really see Garza doing enough as a starter for a team to hand over anything of quality for him without the Brewers picking up 75% of his remaining contract? Frankly I think the chances of that are slim and none with the edge to none. Even then, he'd have to revert at least to his 2014 form just for a team to show any interest in picking up 25% of his contract with a non-prospect as return. Brewers are in the same boat with Garza that the Cubs were in with Edwin Jackson last year. Keeping him in the rotation takes away innings from younger arms you are trying to develop. If he has to be on the roster (and I'd just release him), stick him in the pen as a $12 million mop up guy and see if he can earn some trust to use him later in the game. Basically put him in the role Lohse was in after he got demoted. If he doesn't like it, so be it, cut him and see if anyone picks him up for major league minimum.
  13. Still confused... Choice joins a long list guys that were once rated high as prospects because of power potential that couldn't make enough contact and saw their star fade quickly.
  14. Except they've already traded future value in Sardinas and Sneed for current value in Villar and Flores so Stearns isn't going about building a farm system, he's trying to improve the product on the field while making it younger at the same time.. Fernandez is a young ace who'd make them serious contenders immediately if they didn't have to sacrifice much from the present roster. If they could get him for a package like Peralta, Lopez, Santana, Houser and Lara, I'd think long and hard about it because they'd still have Arcia, Phillips and Hader on the cusp of their careers. Count me not interested in Puig either.
  15. Peralta's injury riddled and erratic 2015 limits his value right now. He might need a return to his 2014 form to maximize the return. They badly need to consider just eating the remainder of Garza's deal though particularly if all the name listed above are healthy.
  16. I know who won't be mad and that's Craig Counsell, Attanasio and David Stearns. Stearns because if they win 80 (or more) it'll be because players they have took a step forward and rookies performed well. 80 wins is certainly not out of reach. There's talent on this roster as it now stands. If it meshes, they'll be watchable unless they deal Lucroy and don't get major league talent back. Counsell wants to win every game. Won/loss records go on a managers record. It doesn't matter that the team says it's "rebuilding". The manager is his record. Just ask Cub manager Dale Svuem and Astros manager Bo Porter. Oops they aren't managing anymore. Keep in mind that trading all useful veterans for prospects doesn't insure that 3-5 years from now, they they'll win more than 70 in any of those seasons either. Pittsburgh was in a state of rebuild for more than 20 years and drafted high year after year.
  17. Flores wasn't rated high as a prospect because he didn't flash the big power and at 5'10" he's hardly your prototypical 1B. But he possesses some unique skills that could prove valuable. He's very difficult to strike out, In fact in AAA in 2015, he walked more than he struck out. Even if his role is as late inning PH, I like guys that can make contact or take walks against relievers that run it up there in the high 90's. It's very interesting in that the last two guys Stearns has acquired, Flores and minor league catcher Rene Garcia have been both very tough to fan in the minors.
  18. Garcia has been really tough to strike out. Kind of the opposite of Maldanado who'll pop the occasional HR but has trouble making contact. Melvin liked Maldonado a lot. Remains to be seen what Stearns view is.
  19. Burns has been left unprotected. The acquisition of Villar lessens the possibility of selecting a 3B considerably.
  20. Subtly, Stearns has helped make the 2016 roster potentially stronger and younger with these two moves. No it's not a contender but it should be fun to watch and that will draw people to the park. Sorry but seeing Shane Petersons and Elian Herreras in the lineup on a regular basis doesn't do much for me. I have no problem replacing them with Villar and Flores either of whom is young enough with enough ability to yet prove they can be major contributors on a big league roster. Counsell likes to maneuver and now he'll have pieces that fit better and are almost all young.
  21. I would imagine this make Shane Peterson expendable. Not unless Flores can play center field. I don't know anything about him but he is listed as a left fielder. The fact that Peterson's been in center field doesn't mean he can play CF. It does make Peterson expendable but reports I'm getting on Flores is he isn't going to be ready by opening day. Regardless they needed LH bats and have added two in the last two days. Flores isn't your typical LF or 1B though. Doesn't strike out a lot and took walks in minors.
  22. I'm more optimistic about 2016 today than I was yesterday as Stearn showed the willingness to deal a prospect in A ball for a guy who potentially makes the 2016 team better. It's not all about tearing down what you have, but using your depth in some areas (in this case starting pitching) to find help in an area of need, 3B, and the guy he acquired is still very young.
  23. if Lind is our opening day first baseman, I quit Quit what? The market for Lind could be softer than you think. It might be better in July. If the Brewers put out an opening day lineup of Lucroy catching, Villar at 3B, Segura at SS, Gennett at 2B, Lind at 1B. Davis in LF, Santana in CF, and Braun in RF, that's a lineup with 4 potential 25 HR bats, one of the best catchers in baseball, 3 potential 25 SB guys, and 4 guys 26 or under, and only one not under control through 2017 and they'd still have Arcia and Phillips knocking on the door. That lineup could and probably will be altered somewhat, but Stearn appears interested on being at least competitive if not contending while he builds. The only thing that would keep them from having a team capable of contending is lack of top of the rotation arms. Now if Nelson were to take that final step and be consistent and they splurged on a Jordan Zimmermann, and one or two young pitchers stepped forward, well that's a lot to ask admittedly. I like that Stearn acquired a guy who'll be on the 2016 opening day roster. It shows he's focusing on the here and now and not dreaming entirely about 2020 and beyond like many of you on here.
  24. Herrera will likely be gone. Sardinas and Perez will fight it out in spring for utility job/RH platoon mate of Gennett. Sardinas gets temporary SS job if Segura is traded. I give the edge to Perez even though he's not currently on the 40 man as Gennett's platoon mate. Rivera plays 3B in Colorado Springs. Maybe they'll keep one more utility guy but I doubt it. Rogers and either Lind or another LH bat will share 1B.
  25. Villar will be starting 3B on opening day. Herrera is a career utility player who will be 31 by opening day. I would suspect they'll trade or release Herrera who did have some moments last year but doesn't fit the youth movement and is not a guy you want even in a platoon.
