  1. Davis is not an elite talent but he's a very solid major league hitter. In 785 major league AB's he's got 99 extra base hits and is slugging .479. That's nothing to sneeze at in this era. He's prone to slumps but also can get white hot seemingly out of nowhere and can carry a team.
  2. Last I checked Des Moines, Indianapolis, Toledo and Omaha all qualify as Midwestern cities. Can't the "Duck Pond" in Madison be enlarged to meet the 10,000 seat minimum while a more permanent facility is planned and constructed? If not Madison, how about Rockford, which now has a Frontier League team playing in a stadium that also would have to be expanded?
  3. Houston is not for real and it will become clearly evident by the All Star Break. They will finish no higher than 4th. So if you are looking to deal with them, better do it soon.
  4. Reed is the same age as Bryce Harper. Not comparing him to Harper, but if he's the best OF in the system right now under 26, lets take a look. He's dominating AA.
  5. Lets see Michael Reed. Otherwise put Jason Rogers out in LF.
  6. Gennett is one more good week from being recalled. His HR was off a lefty.
  7. It was just a few weeks ago I posted that we'd likely see one or more the AA starters in Milwaukee before this year was over and the reaction of many was I was nuts. I may be nuts but not for suggesting that. I was a little off in my timing. I figured it would happen after Lohse was traded/waived. Last place teams go through tons of pitchers plus it's a widely held belief in baseball that anyone that succeeds in AA can hold his own in the majors. Wagner has been very, very good the last two years. He's earned it. The jump from AA to AAA is probably the most insignificant jump in the minors. AA is filled with guys mostly on their ascent, while AAA is littered with guys just hanging on. Wouldn't shock me a bit if other arms on the Biloxi staff get a look.
  8. Yeah the Cardinals injury list is growing to the point it's quite possible they'll come back down to earth rather abruptly. They were already playing a bit over their heads as it was. Brewers picked a bad time to further bury themselves by losing 5 in a row, the one thing they couldn't afford to do while waiting to get Lucroy back. If they were say 19-29 now, you could make a case for them crawling back into it with a healthy lineup, but now they are back down to .333 and more games are off the schedule. It would take a monumental rebound now. Peralta going to the sidelines doesn't help. I would feel better letting Lind go if they had an obvious candidate to play 1B. Yeah Matt Clark, ok. See what he can do for half a season. Would anyone be shocked if after Scott Boras can't find a buyer for Chris Davis, that he calls Attanasio and the Brewers end up with both Khris and Chris Davis? Besides who's the big beneficiary if the Cards start to slide? That's right, the Cubs. Might be worth dealing Lind to Cards just to keep those annoying Cub fans in misery a bit longer.
  9. Lind's May struggles: .187/.299/.360 sort of dampens his value. That's not to say the Cards wouldn't have interest though. Tim Cooney perhaps?
  10. Braun never mentioned the courier by name. He just pointed out that there were issues with the sequence of the handling of the sample and yeah that involved the courier. That's basically what got him off so it was worth mentioning in his defense though he was lying about being clean. It was the media that published the guy's name and Braun got blamed for that because they like to pile on.
  11. KC's season was pretty much all because its bullpen was insane. It played EXACTLY into Yost's managerial style: rigid, unchanging player roles. He had his 7th inning guy, 8th inning guy, and closer. Never changed. The thing was, those three guys were unhittable last season, so his strategy worked. He fell into a World Series. On top of that, they shouldn't have even gotten past Wild Card game. The A's pulled a massive choke job. Yost isn't a good manager. Absolutely right. The 3 guys in the pen were historically good, probably the best ever by a threesome in the pen in history of the game. They made the Royals, Yost-proof last year.
  12. Reports have been rampant that under Roenicke the clubhouse was lax. The Brewers don't change managers all that often. Counsell is burdened by having Roenicke's staff around in particular Narron and Kranitz. Both of those guys need to go. That being said, I still can't get over his resting Braun when he's in the midst of one of his hottest stretches in years.
  13. Nice statement game by Cravy. Not sure if Brewers were paying attention as reports are it will be either Thornburg or Jungmann and his nearly 7 ERA that will get the call in a few days.
  14. They took a flyer on McGehee. He didn't cost them that much more than the Brewers paid to get, gulp, Neal Cotts. He still might payoff. Look at the success they've had with guys like Morse and even Ishikawa. Can't argue with the results they've had. Besides, their flyer on Aoki seems to be paying off very handsomely. I don't know if all their hitters are raking because of where they are playing either. The return of Pence gives their lineup a huge boost and this is a roster that's shown it can produce under pressure.
  15. Segura is definitely a sell low guy. I would keep him. Braun continues to confuse. I don't want any part of him the man and that contract, but the guy has had an incredible May, MVP caliber good. I tend to think he has significant trade value now. Offense is hard to come by, and while his contract is crippling to Milwaukee, it is nothing to big market teams. I don't know who is on his no trade list. I have to think some team will look at his May and figure the fresh start will make for a good acquisition. Boston, for example doesn't care about PED's and he would fit in nicely there. LA would as well, though we would need to take OF bad contract back as part of the deal. Braun is a guy who is one swing away from his next oblique DL trip, so if there is a market, and i think there would be, the Brewers need to act now. How is Braun's contract "crippling to Milwaukee"? The contract that is crippling is Garza's. Braun has shown over the past month that he can still produce at a level that's in line with $20 million per year. He can be traded any time over the next few seasons if he still hits. Besides, they have both Ramirez and Lohse coming off the books at the end of the year, maybe sooner if they can be dealt. Garza on the other hand is performing like a poor #5 starter and they look like they are stuck with him for the duration similar to the Cubs with Edwin Jackson.
  16. One problem. They just love Duffy and why wouldn't they? He's excellent defensively as a converted SS. Kuiper and Krukow were just raving about what a smart hitter he is during Giants telecast last night and that was before his HR to CF. 18th Rounder? I'd hire the scout that found him in a heartbeat. Duffy's an excellent example of a winning organizational philosophy that values baseball smarts and that's not afraid to promote guys from AA to the majors. Giants are in no rush to run out and get a Ramirez. Maybe they will, but it would take a Duffy slump for it to happen. Besides McGehee is still being paid and accepted his assignment to AAA. So if he starts raking at AAA and Duffy does falter, they'll likely just bring him back.
  17. If Thornburg was pitching well, it would be a no-brainer. But he's not. Neither is Jungmann. Some of that is pitching in Colorado Springs, but not all. They likely feel like Blazek can give them 5 innings and fill in for two starts. With an 8 man bullpen, they can cover the rest of the game. I believe there's some thinking that Blazek could be a starter. After all he made a number of starts at AAA last year. This would be a great opportunity for him to make a statement. It's far from a sure thing that they'll find buyers for both Lohse and Garza, certainly not Garza with how he's pitched and what's remaining on his contract.
  18. There's a number of guys that look to me to be likely be available, healthy and better than Lohse or Garza. I'm excluding Hamels because only the largest market teams can afford him. Royals would not fall into that category: The list: Cueto Samardzija Kazmir Haren Harang The list may change between now and July, but all these guys seem more attractive right now than Lohse (even Harang) and I don't think anyone will bite on Garza with the money left on his deal.
  19. Not really. He's allowed 8 earned runs on 16 hits and 8 walks over his last two starts covering 10 2/3 IP. Besides, he too would be on short rest having pitched Saturday. Cravy's probably in the best form of any of the starters (not saying much) at AAA and he last pitched on Thursday so he could be added. Wagner's an option from AA. He last pitched on Friday, so he'd be available if they decided to go that route. Still think Blazek is most likely on about a pitch count of 65-70.
  20. Blazek started 17 games last year and just went 3 innings in his last appearance. He's probably their best option at this point. Thornburg just isn't right yet.
  21. I worry more about guys like Dan Haren, Scott Kazmir and Jeff Samadzija. The market for Hamels and Cueto is going to be very limited. Teams looking for starters will hold out until July rather than settle for Lohse or Garza (who would be a pure salary dump). There's plenty of very good starting pitchers out there who figure to be available at a reasonable cost to the buying team. Not good for the Brewers who's best trade chip might be K-Rod.
  22. Counsell cost them the game today by giving the hottest hitter a day of "rest". Seriously Craig? Lucroy's out. Lind and Davis are slumping. Maldonado's not hitting his weight and you're already resting Ramirez. So you give Braun a day off and you lose 2-1 wasting a fine performance by your best staring pitching?
  23. If he's "one of the best in the business" then the business is in trouble. Somebody please explain to him that saying "walked him on four straight" is a redundancy that no professional should use. Uecker makes the same mistake but he's an ex-player.
  24. Okay, I know the the lets blow it up crowd is having a field day, but hold on just a second. You do all realize that had we seen this Ryan Braun in 2014, that this Brewer core, sans Lind, would have won the NL Central last year? You also realize that the entire core, sans Ramirez and Lohse, a $25 million savings, is under contract or control for 2016? This franchise cannot and should not so easily dismiss an opportunity, albeit a short term one, that exists for 2016. The real Ryan Braun, Carlos Gomez and Lucroy at their peak, Lind, Davis, Segura, Nelson, Peralta, Fiers, an emerging group of hard throwers in the pen and a group of young players especially middle infielders knocking on the door. Money to spend in a very deep starting pitching FA pool. Of course these core players have to stay on the field but that's true everywhere anytime. Just saying the decision to blow it up and build for 3-4 years down the road isn't so easy, and coming to that conclusion based on a year end where Braun was a shell and the first 15 games of this year was a disaster, might not be all that wise.
  25. Tom Brady got 1/4 of a season for deflating footballs. Maybe his appeal will reduce it to 1/8th of a season. Integrity of the game matters even if the "cheating" seems trivial. Yankees had to cover more innings for Pineda than Brewers will for Smith.
