  1. Hundley already was traded a while ago to the Orioles. In fact he played against the Brewers for the O's. I have mentioned Will Venable (2016 FA) as a good fit and Venable is also definitely on the block. Like Denorfia, he's having an off year but his career OPS is .735, and in Miller Park it's 1.014. Denorfia loves Miller Park too with a .934 OPS there. Not much to separate those two, but Venable is LH and none of the Brewer starting trio is.
  2. I'd rather have a lefty bat like Will Venable as long as SD doesn't want much in return but you're thinking is sound. Young's road splits aren't that bad: .250/.330/.375. If you can get him after he clears waivers, then the Mets would be on the hook for most of his salary.
  3. I don't think there's anyone in this rotation that can't use the extra day at this point in the season. We often see Lohse have a start following one of his good ones where he's not as sharp and he fights his way through. An extra day in there occasionally might solve that. Not that he can't win when he's not at his best, but when he is, he can beat just about anyone. When Peralta's fresh, he can be dominating. As for Gallardo, after he short stint on the DL last year, he was revived and pitched very well. As for Estrada, his place in the rotation is shaky at best. Nelson's turn isn't quite lined up with his right now, but a couple off days could solve that. Maybe you end up with Nelson skipping one start to preserve his innings a bit.
  4. Zarraga pulled for pinch hitter in the 3rd inning??
  5. No power?? 15 Doubles in basically 1/4 of a season of full time play is pretty good. He doesn't hit many HR, but to hit .388 you have to be able use the entire field, a trait that is becoming more and more valuable in the age of shifting defenses.
  6. Dunn has posted an OPS of .686 over the last 28 days. Over his last 28 days, Overbay has posted an OPS of .827. As for run producing, Dunn has 1 RBI for every 8 plate appearances. Reynolds and Overbay combined have 1 RBI for every 8.04 plate appearances. Dunn got off to a hot start this year but since May 1st, he's hitting .210/.335/.405. I dare say Reynolds and Overbay can do that and a bit better for a heck of a lot less.
  7. In game threads reflect the emotion of the moment. What's the big deal? In K-Rod's case "waiting for the other shoe to drop" is rather natural for those of us that remember his 2012 season. Now that was ugly. As great as a player has performed, things can change quickly so you don't turn a blind eye.
  8. Zarraga should be called up in September. He needs to be added to 40 man anyway and I think a guy with his contact skills can help the Brewers down the stretch. To me, its a no-brainer. He did strike out for the first time this month though last night in addition to his 4 hits. Time for a little extra bp Shawn!
  9. Like virtually the entire Padre roster, Venable is in the midst of an awful year, but this guy has hit well in Miller Park in the past and could be a bench upgrade.
  10. If he can't top .250 in A ball, how can one even project him to hit above .200 in the majors? The name brought up when he was drafted was Greg Vaughn. Vaughn didn't hit for much of an average but it was at least respectable. Vaughn hit for a lot higher average in the minors than Roache has done so far. There's still time, but early returns aren't encouraging. A Reynolds type career might cut it in the infield but not in LF.
  11. No but Blazek, Figaro, Falu, and Shackelford are all candidates to be removed at some point if they need room.
  12. If I were the D-Backs GM and was looking to trade Goldschmidt, I would look to a team with several guys of Nelson's caliber or better and ask for all of them. If the Brewers want to pick up a really good player in trade, there is no way they're going to do it without adding Nelson. Even with Nelson, assuming they're not going to trade key guys from the MLB roster, it's unlikely they would be able to pick up an MVP-caliber player like Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt isn't going anywhere. He's the face of their franchise and under team control at a reasonable cost through 2019. The only reason to trade a guy like Goldschmidt would be if the franchise was devoid of talent and even if healthy, non-competitive. The D-backs aren't in a dire fire sale situation. They are a lot like the 2013 Brewers. They have plenty of talent on their roster much if which is in or just entering their prime and they are quite strong up the middle. This year they were done in by injuries in particular to Corbin and now Arroyo and a very sluggish start. I suspect they'll use the rest of this year to evaluate what they have in their system pitching-wise. There's a fine line for teams like the D-backs and Brewers. Bad years will happen but trading Goldschmidt would be tossing out the baby with the bath water.
  13. Weeks is 2 for 22 with 10 K's since he peaked at .365 on May 15. I wouldn't get too carried away by his 3 week hot spell earlier. He's probably still no better than a .230/.310/.400 high strike out hitter when all is said and done. Weeks is now 4-6 with 5 runs and a walk since you posted this on May 28th. I don't know that using one small sample to say that another small sample is invalid makes a lot of sense. Weeks has been playing very well this year. He's also hit some rockets even during that 2-22 stretch that were right at players in the 4 starts he got over those 22 at bats(and he also has a very high BABIP) I have no idea what he's going to be when all is said and done, but right now, he's playing very well. For a team like the Brewers to get to the playoffs, they're going to need some unexpected contributions. I'm hopeful that Weeks has one of those types of years this season. Since May 19 (1 calendar month), Weeks is hitting .178/.260/.244 with no HR and 6 RBI. He's hitting .125 in June. He's looking every bit the guy I expected we'd see this year. Yes he showed he's capable of producing for a few weeks, but when he's not in one of those stretches which are increasingly rare, he's a liability both offensively and defensively.
  14. I am too but the experience with Roache has tempered my enthusiasm until I actually see them play. Roache was supposed to be an impact bat and frankly has been a bust so far.
  15. Yes as he brings better defense and offense than Gennett does. A 2.5 WAR would be a career year for Gennett. At best Gennett is a 1 WAR player with his defense probably bringing him to a negative WAR. Gennett has to be platooned while Hill does not. Per Baseball-Reference, Gennett has already posted a 3.1 WAR for what is essentially 90% of one full season in the majors. So his "career year" is still occurring now? Hill is vastly overpaid at this point and would be a totally unnecessary gamble for a guy who is limited to 2B much like Weeks.
  16. Nobody's a buyer on Hill because of his contract. Brewers will kick the tires on middle infield types that can backup at SS and platoon some at 2B next year but not in Hill's price range. Gregorius does fit that profile better but Arizona won't just give him away either and even though he's better vs. LHP, his bat might not be potent enough for the Brewers to decide they have to keep the training wheels on Scooter vs. LHP.
  17. Because the Brewers had the audacity to actually win the division in 2011. Cards may have won the championship but they didn't control the division. Actually it goes back to 2007 and 2008. Brewers finished ahead of defending champ Cards in 2007 causing shock to smug Cardinal nation, then won 10 of 15 from them in 2008 when they also finished well ahead of the Redbirds. Then there's the deep seeded inferiority complex of the St. Louis fan over their rather woeful pro football history. Yeah they won one with Kurt Warner, but this is a town that lost it's first NFL franchise, and since that brief surge in the late 90's and early 2000's has gone right back to irrelevance. When the football Cardinals left for Arizona, fans down there masked their angst by declaring themselves the greatest baseball fans on the planet. Ever since they've been insufferable.
  18. Kirk Gibson played WR for Michigan State, the same school that produced the poster boy for steroids, Tony Mandarich. Coincidence? Lucroy played it classy, but imagine if he'd have copied the famous Gibson fist pump from the 88 World Series as he rounded 2nd and headed to 3rd! I know I was doing it. Hey Kirk, does the phrase "Don't tug on Superman's cape" mean anything to you?
  19. Well his brother is certainly filled out. Orlando is basically duplicating the numbers Oswaldo put up in FSL as a 20 year old except for the power. I think Orlando will hit. He definitely is high up on the Brewer prospect list for good reason.
  20. In my opinion it was bad asset management on the part of the Brewers. With Estrada struggling, Mills could have been brought up to make a few starts, and then been either kept or traded for something of actual value based on how he did. For a team doing everything to hold on to what appears a dubious prospect in Wang who's 3-4 years away, it just doesn't make much sense.
  21. Estrada will be entering his final arbitration year next year. The likelihood he is tendered a contract by the Brewers this winter diminishes with every ball flying out of the park. Point is once you make the move and remove him from the rotation, what's the point in keeping him if you have alternatives in the pen? That could be why he's getting a long leash, because there's going to be no turning back. I think they need to get Nelson here in time to make 5 or 6 starts before the deadline, so if he does fail, they can pick someone up as a rental.
  22. I think you are overlooking the elephant in the room with the 12 something ERA.
  23. That game winning HR is Polanco's only extra base hit so far. The other 11 have been all singles. Difference between Pirate and Brewer young players are Pirates get ballyhooed and the Brewer's young players like Davis and Gennett don't. In his last 6 games, Gennett is 10 for 24, with 3 doubles a HR and 5 RBI. So Brewer fans should be just as excited right?
