  1. Last year he hit a lot of slow dribblers that turned into singles. I know much of the year it was comment that he was leading the league in infield hits.
  2. Bonafacio and Bloomquist both fit the mold of a Hairston. Bloomquist certainly lacks power as did Hairston but he's always been a tough out with the game on the line because he generally puts the bat on the ball and uses the entire field. There aren't .800 plus OPS guys out there who are bench players. Bonafacio and Bloomquist are solid bench players who won't hurt you if they have to start for stretches either.
  3. John Mayberry would be a decent fit.
  4. How about Scooter for an All Star spot? His numbers are looking pretty good compared to the rest of the league at 2B. He's not on the ballot of course but maybe he can sneak into the fan vote for the last guy. Scooter may have a real shot at the final fan vote now with numbers he's putting up and the fact he wasn't on the original ballot.
  5. Yes they need to stop handicapping themselves by playing with a 24 man roster. Apparently they see something in Wang I don't. All I see is a 22 year old with a live arm that doesn't have a clue yet how to get major league hitters out. That description fits a lot of guys in A ball I would think. If he were "special" we would have seen some hint of it. Handicapping a major league roster of a contending team so to keep one extra A ball level arm makes no sense to me, but heck what do I know, I've only been following the game for 55 or so years. As for their roster, all the backups to Segura have proved wanting. The one guy they haven't tried is Hector Gomez. Yeah he's not patient, but he does have some pop in his bat, and in his last 22 games he's hitting .293/.326/.463. I'd drop the 31 yo Falu in favor of the 26 yo Gomez on the 40 man.
  6. While I'm not as down on Schafer as WTP, I'm on board with Dejesus. He'd be a very handy guy to have to be that fill in guy in the OF. He's owed $6 million after this year. Too bad he's never played 1B. But I think he could be had for a B level prospect like Cravy and or Rogers. A little cheaper version of Dejesus would be Chris Denorfia. He's not a LH hitter, but he does hit well in Miller Park (career .923 OPS there), and can play all 3 OF positions.
  7. You are overlooking his one full year as a regular with the Marlins in 2011 when he hit .296/.360/.393. That adds up to an OPS of .753. He's a .263 lifetime hitter with over 150 career steals. He's got some value. We're talking who is this year's Jerry Hairston. That bar isn't all that high. Hairston was a career .257 hitter with not all that much more power and less of a SB threat.
  8. Now that the slumber of the US Open is over, I have a few comments. What a joke Pinehurst #2 was!. I'm so tired of commentators telling me that turning the rough into one big sandy patch of weeds was such a bright idea. It looked awful in HD. I can't imagine it inspired too many viewers to want to take up the game. What a joke. Kudos to Johnny Miller for criticizing the "turtle-back" greens, but he didn't go far enough. He will be missed on future Open telecasts. Joe Buck and Greg Norman next year?? Ugh! Kaymer played great but the more he wins, the more golf loses. Nice fellow, but no charisma at all.
  9. Estrada's confidence is shot. You can see each HR is affecting him by his reaction. It's doing him no good keeping him in the rotation and obviously it's doing the team no good either. He's had enough chances. He's always been a "fine line" type guy. If they have to wait on Nelson for reasons of not starting his arby clock a year too early, fine, go with Fiers or even Gorzelanny for a start.
  10. Roenicke needs to take his blinders off. If Estrada needs to work on things, it should be out of the pen in low leverage situations, not starting every 5 days.
  11. To say the Brewers have 4 lefties isn't really accurate. Wang being a lefty has no effect on how or when he's used. I think the plan all along was that when Gorzelanny was back they'd go with 8 arms in the pen, 4 RH, 3 LH and Wang for strictly moping up. This is a team playing with a 24 man roster. They think Wang is worth it. I don't.
  12. I would expect both Bianchi and Schafer to return at some point, likely when Estrada gets traded..or DFA'd. Fiers is holding Nelson's spot till they are ready to make that move.
  13. Prado makes a lot of sense. He's a solid player. I discount his numbers so far this year. They aren't all that bad. He's one of their core players though and it depends on whether or not they decide they need a complete rebuild or not. The Brewers wouldn't be the only team with interest in him, so I don't think he'll come all that cheap even with his salary.
  14. "Zarraga continues to rake but at 25 in AA I'm not sure what to make of him." He's only 0.4 of a year older than the average for AA. A .375/.480/.500 line and almost 3 walks for every strike out is impressive in any league at any age, but AA is full of pitchers considered prospects. He may not project as a major league starter, but he could carve out a nice career as a part time player and very useful bench bat especially in the NL. I think he may be the most advanced bat in the entire system and I'd love to see him get a September call up to use some of his skills down the stretch. He wasn't a switch hitter nor did he catch, but a comparable type hitter to Zarraga at the same stage was Matt Diaz. Diaz, a 17th rounder, hit .383/.444/.542 in 280 AB's as a 25 yo in the Southern League in 2003. He didn't walk as much but like Zarraga, rarely struck out. Tampa Bay apparently couldn't find a use for him and ended up waiving him. Diaz had a solid career mostly with the Braves as a platoon bat.
  15. Sorry but OPS isn't always the best indicator of production. Overbay has hit a lot of balls hard, has gotten key hits driving in runs in key situations, and has shown patience at the plate with 23 BB. Overbay's not a long term solution and if they can upgrade, great but as far as what he's done this season, it's been better than I expected. I don't trust Francisco. When he's hot, he's hot, but when he's cold he's awful He's already started to tail off, hitting .185/.241/.444 in his last 20 games.
  16. The distance between the penthouse and the outhouse isn't that great. It can happen to almost any team. A couple injuries, a couple key players slumping and what looks like a contender is a last place team. It's part of the reason I just don't get a team like the Cubs completely tanking 4-5 seasons in a row intentionally.
  17. Zarraga's omission would have been an absolute travesty.
  18. At the start of the year I never thought I'd be defending Overbay but I think he's been better than his numbers may indicate. His line drive percentage of 25% is 5 points higher than the league average yet his BABIP is considerably below average at .278. His strikeout rate is better than it was last year and his walk rate is better than league average. He's also driven in a career best 22% of the runners on base when he's batting. That's well above the league average of 15%. Now I don't believe that means he can play more than 3-4 times per week, but I do think that at least up to now, he's been serviceable.
  19. The Brewers won't find themselves in this position very often. The postseason is there to be had. Nelson isn't going to suddenly lose 5-6 miles and sink on his fastball and leave straight pitches over the middle of the plate. He's their number one prospect for a reason, and he's had plenty of innings in the minor leagues. He's not going to dominate major league hitters like he is the guys in AAA but he's going to give them a good chance to win when he's on. Estrada might have some use in the pen yet this year, but he's looking more and more like a non-tender guy this winter.
  20. A guy the Rays might willingly part with is DeJesus. He would be significant upgrade offesively over Schafer as 4th OF and give coverage this year in case Davis slumps or Braun re-injures himself. He's never played 1B, but he might be worth a look there as he's a pretty good athlete.
  21. Estrada's trade value is almost nil at this point. Roenicke might see him as a guy who's capable but the rest of the league sees him as a struggling 5th starter. Darling and Hernandez were ripping Roenicke on the Mets broadcast for not having a guy up sooner as Estrada was walking guys in the 6th, basically saying "he's a 5th starter, and you have to be ready to pull that guy when he gets to the third time around in the batting order". They had barely gotten that said when, boom, ballgame over. Estrada is on pace to shatter Blyleven's 50 HR allowed in a season record and he's on pace to do it in about 90 fewer innings. Yeah this team has other issues elsewhere, but they have a solution to this one. It's is a guy who's dealing in AAA who happens to be their number 1 prospect. Pull the plug already.
  22. I'd prefer Nelson, but I can live with giving Fiers the next 3 or 4. It would allow them to see if Estrada has any value out of the pen too. Estrada is on pace to shatter the MLB record for HR allowed (50).
  23. If I'm a parent of a kid drafted out of high school who also has a college scholarship available, I'd advise him to sign if the signing bonus exceeds the value of a 4 year college scholarship. Otherwise I'd advise him to take the scholarship and play college baseball. If the high school player then washes out of pro ball in 2 or 3 years, he can always go to college and get a degree as a normal student using that bonus money.
  24. I see Zarraga moving to AAA instead of Weisenberger for the simple fact that they he's a guy who could provide the bench an offensive boost in Milwaukee in September. Zarraga might be the most advanced hitter (ie: major league ready bat) they have in their entire system. A couple months in Nashville might confirm this.
  25. I'd lean against it. Boras is going to want to really cash in after really being outsmarted the last time. At worst, they extend him a QO for 2017 insuring a number one pick in return. Tyrone Taylor's ETA closely aligns with Gomez' contract running out. The development of Taylor might be the key.
