  1. With Ramirez back, one of Reynolds (12 HR) or Overbay (17 RBI) becomes a bench player. Overbay's averages don't look good, but his line drive percentage is excellent at 25%. As for Bianchi, he just got into a bit of a slump with the bat and with limited chances afforded bench players, he didn't have a chance to work his way out of it. Bianchi's a career .309 hitter in AAA. He's pretty much hit at every level. I too think he'll be back but he needs 200 or so AB's as a regular in Nashville. If he started at SS in the majors he'd likely hit .240 or so. Not saying that's good enough to start but he wouldn't be hitting .150 either. Whoever is backup SS in Milwaukee is not going to see the field much at all. Segura plays almost every day.
  2. A half a year of Dunn will cost you $7.5 million. Anyone really think he's worth that? Reynolds has more HR this year. They are basically the same player offensively save a few more walks for Dunn but Reynolds is better defensively and not the base clogger Dunn is.
  3. Go to Baseball reference and you'll see that most teams have multiple bench players with similar numbers. Cardinals quartet of Mark Ellis, Descalso, Shane Robinson, and Ryan Grichuk have 251 PA and are hitting a combined .166 and slugging .220 with 1 HR and 18 RBI combined. That's pretty typical around baseball. Coming off the bench in the big leagues is a tough job. Usually it's against premier relief pitchers throwing in the upper 90's. As bad as Bianchi looked for the Brewers, put him in the lineup everyday against AAA pitching and he's suddenly hitting .313/.371/.500.
  4. While I agree with many of your points, assuming you can get much value back for Estrada in a trade this winter is stretch if he continues to muddle along with a 4+ ERA and ends up allowing 35-40 HR. He is a decent back end of the rotation starter and teams often do look for veterans to fill that role, but they want them on the cheap. Estrada will likely get $5 million or so in arbitration and while that won't break the bank for any team, there will be comparable guys out there at that price that won't require surrendering any talent in return.
  5. As long as Ramirez is healthy, I don't think they'll make a move for a 1B. Reynolds and Overbay combo has been quite productive. Overbay's actually been a bit unlucky. His LD% is a solid 25%, which is considerably better than league average. But his BABIP is only .266. Nobody is more surprised than I am but it's one of those times I'm happy to be wrong. Playing Overbay 3 days a week might be the way to maximize his ability at age 37. If Morris gets hot, and Overbay slows down, then I think they'll make that move. But that's a way off. There is no sign of either right now. I don't see a rental that makes sense right now. Dunn?? Forget it. Even a partial season rental is expensive and they won't make a move that will damage their defense. Besides they have the RH version of Dunn already.
  6. I'm happy to see Zarraga getting some time at 1B. Sure his power numbers don't profile as a 1B, but he might be the most advanced hitter at either AA or AAA right now and 1B for 2015 is up for grabs. Hopefully, he'll get some time at Nashville in the 2nd half.
  7. Fiers' K rate suggest he could be some help in the pen and he can be sent down at any point to make room for either Gorzelanny or Henderson, though I'm surprised to read the reports on Gorzelanny weren't encouraging. Eventually this could open up for the move of Estrada to the pen and Nelson to the rotation. Sometime in late April or early May, Thornburg started struggling with his command. He was so dominant early, this was indeed an ominous sign. Brewers certainly aren't immune.
  8. Brewers' need fans from beyond the immediate area. Starting earlier makes it tough on fans driving distances to get in the park. It also would condense arrival times making for slower entry into the parking lots. Back in the days of the Milwaukee Braves, they actually started night games at 8 pm. Early days of Brewers, for many years they started at 7:30. In the days of doubleheaders, they started first game at 6. The second games started usually around 9. If you can't stay at least until 10:30, think about going to afternoon games or taking a nap before the game.
  9. Well, I suspect Gorzelanny will soon be replacing Thornburg on the 25 man roster. Thornburg made that decision pretty easy for them last night. He needs to work on things.
  10. "The fact that he has a 93% strand rate is luck not talent." Really?? He's made good pitches with men on. That's luck??
  11. More up to date stats on DeMuth: .377 BA with 24 doubles and 5 HR in 244 AB's. Has one more extra base hit (30) than Schwarber (29). Of course Schwarber has him outhomered 18-5.
  12. If Nelson wasn't banging down the door, sure you hang with Estrada longer. But the issue is going forward, do you want a guy pitching every 5th day with great stuff (Nelson) who's ready to be a major league pitcher or a journeyman starter who's struggling of late and who even on days when he's cruising along can suddenly turn a one run lead or a tie game into a deficit with a fat, straight fastball? Dave Bush pitched his way out of the major leagues because he couldn't keep the ball in the park. The rate Estrada is allowing them this year isn't just bad, it's historic. It's the suddenness with which guys like Bush and Estrada give up runs that puts teams in a bind. Generally a guy will show signs he's ready to come out of a game and you can have somebody up and ready. With Estrada, he'll look fine one minute, then boom. A slugging percentage against that's exactly 100 points higher than league average (.489 to .398) doesn't cut it. I say give Marco anywhere from 2-4 more starts. If he's still allowing 1-2 HR in each of those starts, pull the plug.
  13. I don't believe that account is entirely accurate. Spahn did start his pro career in 1940 but he pitched in the minors in 1940 and 1941. He started with the Braves in 1942, but got sent down by Stengel after refusing to throw at Pee Wee Reese. He also wasn't pitching well either. Stengel got fired by the Braves after that year and he later regretted sending Spahn down. It was after the 1942 season that he enlisted in the Army where he fought heroically in Europe. I don't think that had anything to do with Stengel. Had he not enlisted, he would have been drafted.
  14. If it makes you feel any better, the Brewers lost their last game of the season last year, after taking the first 3 of the series. Now had they lost two of the previous 3 in that series, they'd be up several spots. I'd hold off on the sick to my stomach feeling until we actually see how these guys end up. I think I speak for most fans that I don't know enough about any of these guys to have as strong opinion. It does seem to me unless they are certain Coulter can't catch, that it's odd that they'd take Pentecost. Of all the hitting positions, it seems they are stocked pretty well behind the plate.
  15. They've painted themselves in a corner. Their number 1 prospect is dominating at AAA and appears ready to take rotation spot. Estrada's been ok by 5th starter standards, but if he continues making one mediocre start after another, they need to make the change and go with the much higher ceiling guy with better stuff. Problem is what do you do with Estrada? Bullpen is crowded now and that's without Henderson and Gorzelanny. They seem committed to Wang too as has been well documented and discussed. I suspect they'll give Estrada until the end of June. If he continues along as he has the last month, they will make a change perhaps dealing Estrada for minimal value back. Of course all that could change with an injury or two in the meantime. If it were me, I'd pull the plug a bit sooner. It's not that they don't have other options if Nelson struggles too. Estrada himself is feeling the heat. You can see it in his body language.
  16. I don't know how much longer they can keep trotting out a guy who's on pace to allow 50 HR this season. Sure as 5th starters go, he's okay but the ante has been upped and there's this guy who's dominating AAA hitters with much better stuff. Estrada's trade value isn't much, so the move might be to the pen. Oh wait, they need a 25 man spot don't they?? Don't get me started on Wang.
  17. With the Brewers in contention, Melvin isn't likely to deal Gallardo for prospects, but that doesn't preclude him for making a deal that can help them now if there was a match. You just don't see too many deals like that in middle of the season any more. If the Yankees were say desperate enough to deal Solarte for Gallardo, well that would be worth considering. Looks like they'll hold on to Weeks too and hope he continues to deliver in his role and just let him go for the salary relief at the end of the year. There are teams out there like the A's that could use him.
  18. irving falu remains with his minor league option intact. elian herrera optioned to nashville for the pending return of aramis ramirez from the disabled list. I just think they like Falu's defense at SS more than Herrera's in case it's needed. I doubt they are looking beyond this year for either player. Falu could still end up using that option to make room for a 13th pitcher.
  19. Danny Murphy?? Really?? Murphy certainly isn't an upgrade over Gennett against RHP and besides, he's older, isn't great defensively and makes money that could be more wisely spent elsewhere. Murphy's one edge over Gennett is he's a better hitter vs. LHP, but with a predominantly right hand hitting lineup, I don't see that as making a difference.
  20. It's their money. You'd think they'd wait to see what he does over at least a half a season in the majors. Seems to me that he's "contact challenged" so no sure thing (see Mike Olt). Didn't they learn anything waiting on Brett Wallace?
  21. Well the obvious question is what would the Pirates want if anything in addition to Mills to surrender their Rule 5 rights to Wang and allow the Brewers to open up a bullpen spot for Gorzelanny. The only leverage the Brewers have is if multiple teams are eying him.
  22. Sure if he had more AB's he'd be in contention as a starter. But he doesn't. It's not that Braun hasn't been fine or worthy of a spot on the All Star bench, it's that other guys, most notably Puig, Stanton and Gomez, have all been on the field more and producing fantastic numbers. All things being equal, the guys who've played in more games are more deserving.
  23. Reynolds may be on pace for 30+ homers, but he's also getting OBP at well below a .300 clip. 21 of his 25 RBI have come via the homerun, so when he isn't hitting homeruns, he is, by and large, virtually useless. His OPS is actually .020 points lower than our slap hitting 2nd baseman, one Scooter Gennett. Morris' OPS at Nashville is .780, hardly proof that he would exceed the combo of Reynolds and Overbay. High OBP for Reynolds isn't really the objective down in the 7th spot in the order though his OBP is 80 points higher than his BA so he does take walks. Run production is and while most of his RBI are coming from HR, the fact is, he's hitting enough of them to end up with a significant number of RBI (he projects to around 75). Throw in the fact that when Maldanado catches, that Lucroy plays 1B, they are getting production there. Would I prefer Morales' type bat in the order? Certainly. But the question is plan B. In my mind Morris has still to put up numbers that say he belongs in the big leagues playing everyday. The Rangers and the Yankees needs at 1B are short term so they may only offer a deal for this year to Morales. Brewers on the other have a need at 1B beyond this year. So the advantage could be their willingness to offer Morales a 3-4 year deal.
  24. Lucroy is going to make the team along with Posey as backups to Yadi. The only screaming about that will be from Atlanta fans who overrate Gattis because he hits HR. What Lucroy is doing may be lost on the voting public but it's not lost around baseball. I often listen to opponents telecasts, and he's raved about routinely.
  25. Ramirez' imminent return means Reynolds goes back to 1B where he'll get 2/3 of the starts. The Reynolds/Overbay combo has been just effective enough that unless Morris' numbers scream he's ready, they won't make that change. Morris' OPS is under .800 at AAA. That isn't knocking down the door and with Reynolds on pace for 30+ HR do you bring him up to sit most of the time?
