  1. Look at it from Ilitch's viewpoint. He turns 85 in July and for obvious reasons, wants to win now. He's worth billions. If he's still around 5-6 years from now when Cabrera will likely be slipping, he's still going to be worth billions and he'll buy another star player. If he's not, well that's his heirs problem. MLB needs a salary cap. Not all owners act in the best long term financial interests of their team. An owner like Ilitch isn't in the game to accumulate wealth, or even necessarily to increase the value of the franchise. He's in it for the kick of winning a championship while he's still alive and well enough to enjoy it.
  2. Mike Ilitch is the poster boy for the need for a salary cap in baseball. He's an 84 year old billionaire. He can't take it with him. He wants a championship and if he thinks making Cabrera happy is key to that, he will do it whether it makes financial sense or not. This isn't the first time he's done this. The contract he gave Fielder was $50 million more than any other team was contemplating. Is the contract bad? Sure. But chances are that the contract will outlive Ilitch.
  3. No but Dukes average FB velocity is 88 mph that is Jeff Suppan like. Wang on the other hand his average FB sits around 92 mph and peaks at 95. Again Duke is a LOOGY and nothing more unless you want to see BP. Wang has shown he can get right handed batters out and his stuff is far better than Dukes. Just watching Wang pitch would tell you that Wang is the better pitcher now. Duke wasn't really competing with Wang. Duke's job is to get a lefty hitters out late in close games. He's a key member of the pen at least until Gorzelanny returns. The ultimate goal for Wang is for him to develop into a starter. If he does manage to survive this year, he'll be back in minors as a starter next season. I seriously doubt we'll see a ton of innings (over under for me is about 33) from Wang this year. He'll be used for an inning here and there in blowouts, maybe soak up some innings when the starter gets knocked out real early and be the last guy in when they run out of pitchers in extra innings. Then he'll likely go to winter ball.
  4. He's not a great hitter for a catcher. He'll be an absolutely terrible hitter for a first baseman. He's a great hitter for a catcher and projects better than Overbay with the bat. Even though Roenicke's not afraid to PH his catchers, having a third guy that can catch would free him up to use Lucroy in the most advantageous times on days he's not starting and to pinch hit for Maldonado in a key spot too.
  5. They might have gotten the better player.
  6. Overbay's is what $1.35 million? They might end up eating most of that before it's all over anyway if he's hitting .165 on June 1. He's making about what Alex Gonzalez got last year.
  7. The Brewers got Carlos Gomez for JJ Hardy. There's plenty of time to trade Segura even in his arbitration years, but I wouldn't think about it until there is a replacement ready from within.
  8. If they can make the money a wash from Texas' viewpoint, I think a Moreland for Weeks is possible if the Brewers also throw in a minor leaguer though my fear is Texas would want Gindl and Weeks for Moreland. In that case, I'd want the Brewers to save at least a couple million.
  9. I gotta believe Prince is lobbying for this. What worries me is Daniels came out the other day regretting paying too much for Garza last year, so his inclination might be to be conservative. Weeks has had a decent spring, but much of that was the first 10 days. He's not done a whole lot the last week when pitchers are getting dialed in and the other day looked really slow running to first on a grounder to the hole he'd have easily beaten out earlier in his career. He could use a big game in front of Ranger scouts.
  10. Don't forget Halton too.
  11. Barring a trade it appears the opening day roster is set: Rotation: Gallardo Lohse Garza Estrada Peralta Bullpen: Henderson Rodríguez Kintzler Duke Thornburg Smith Wang Outfield: Davis Schafer Gómez Braun Infield: Reynolds Overbay Weeks Gennett Segura Ramírez Bianchi Catchers: Lucroy Maldonado Gorzelanny is lone guy on DL.
  12. Opening day roster is now set barring a trade. I can't recall a year when it's been set with 6 days to spare.
  13. Seriously?? Last I checked, Lance Roenicke still has a spot. He's both older than McMahan and hasn't shown anything close to what McMahan showed just two years ago. Golson is gone so he won't get bumped either. Walla? 280 AB's at Wisconsin, and zero HR? For a corner OF? At some point his draft status should be meaningless. McMahan was released because his last name wasn't Roenicke. Nepotism is alive and well in the Brewer system.
  14. Apparently Mattison showed enough in big league camp and with Gindl not making the major league roster, there was simply a glut at AAA.
  15. Arizona had no need for Reynolds because they have Prado and Goldschmidt at the corners. However if they really wanted a Brewer starter bad enough, I'd ask them for Prado and offer them Reynolds as part of the deal to fill their new hole at 3B.
  16. I'd give Overbay just enough starts to keep whatever bat he has left somewhat sharp. Certainly no more than 1 per week, likely a day game following a night game. With defense being a concern, Bianchi needs to be the guy giving Ramirez rest. Besides with 2 2b, and Segura in there virtually every day, Bianchi will need to play occasionally somewhere, even filling in in the outfield once in a while.
  17. Did this happen? It sounds like the way history is written. It happened about a dozen times from mid-August to early September, after which Francisco didn't play much. Basically from the time where they had just had it with Francisco's defense to the time where they totally gave up on him. Francisco stopped hitting altogether after about August 17th too. He was toast after back to back 4 strikeout games on August 18 and 19. After that they rotated Yuni, Halton and Lucroy with Francisco. Francisco did not homer after August 16.
  18. Record: 85-77 All Stars: Gomez, Lucroy Biggest Surprise: Schafer, Thornburg Biggest Disappointment: Davis Playoffs: Miss 2nd WC by 2 games Place: Tied with Reds for 2nd place NL Playoff Teams: Nats, Cards, Dodgers, Giants, Braves AL Playoff Teams: Boston, Detroit, Baltimore, Texas, Angels World Series: Dodgers over Rangers Note: Braun is essentially blackballed from All Star game, first by fans, and second by league despite numbers well deserving of inclusion
  19. How much of Rickie's salary would it take to get Moreland in such a deal? Throw in Francisco too.
  20. I don't have a problem with Francisco being released regardless of his spring numbers. I do have an problem with Overbay as the alternative. Even Ishikawa, who's had a strong spring and appears to have made the Pirates, would have been a better option.
  21. As much as I think 1B remains a huge question mark, if the pitching stays healthy and the bullpen doesn't implode ala 2012, the team should be competitive enough to save all those guys. What I'd like to see is for Ash to retire/be dumped so they can bring in a guy to groom as the eventual replacement to Melvin. It makes no sense to me to have both the GM and assistant be on the wrong side of 60. The brain trust is a little too much an old boys network for my taste and I'm the same age as Melvin.
  22. Several things are obvious. One is Francisco's fate was sealed in September, not March. All the effort to trade or sign Loney, and then bring in two non roster guys were pretty obvious clues. All that being said, Overbay looks worse than even I suspected he was this spring and I had zero expectations after he was awful in the 2nd half last year in NY. I thought certainly they couldn't have Overbay after this horrid spring. Yes Reynolds should get most starts at 1B, and I can live with Bianchi filling in for Ramirez. Heck Bianchi has to play somewhere occasionally and with 2 second basemen only on the roster, 3rd is the most logical spot. But the real issue is late in games who's going to be called on to pinch hit? Gindl's back in the minors. Bianchi (SS) and Schafer (CF) are the only backups capable of handling those key defensive spots so they are secondary PH. That leaves Overbay and whichever 2B isn't playing that day. Not good. Roster construction remains a weakness for this brain trust. If you think you've seen this before, you have. Craig Counsell was getting key PH opportunities throughout his 0 for nearly 50 streak. He was kept around a year too long.
  23. "I just can't tolerate the idea of having Overbay/Francisco receiving the majority of 1B playing time in 2014" I think we are all in agreement on that point. I don't know which is worse. That thought or the plan to use Alex Gonzalez there last spring.
  24. Roenicke was the guy pushing for Alex Gonalez at first base last year. How'd that work out? Now he's quoted by JS that stats this spring won't be determining factor. I guess he has to say that because his guy Overbay is 0 for his last 24 in Arizona. Of course this is the same guy who used Craig Counsell repeatedly as he went through his 0 for 45 or whatever that abomination was a few years back. And they wonder why this team is slow out of the gate? Looks like another year when they'll be 10 back by Mother's Day.
  25. Of the 3 choices of keeping Gennett, dealing Weeks, keeping Weeks, optioning Gennett, and finally keeping both, for me the least desirable is keeping both. Now Weeks has been awful through May for two straight seasons, and giving him another shot at it because he's been decent in Arizona this spring screams the old bromide of the definition of insanity is repeating something over and over and expecting a different result. But I wouldn't be surprised if they did so I'm going to expect the worst, hope for the best, and live with it. Gennett earned the starting nod with two solid months last year and well over 200 AB's. They sort of put him through the pressure cooker this spring of still having on paper at least to "earn" a job that should be his. Rather than protecting him from LHP, it would do him more good to see all kinds of pitching. Finally there's the roster construction. Bianchi's earned the utility infield role. Yes, he can't play OF like Herrera, but he's better defensively in the infield, he's out of options and he's raked in Arizona. Moving one of the two 2B opens up a spot for the deserving Gindl who really has nothing to prove at AAA.
