  1. Andrew McCutcheon pantomimes putting guns back in his holster while standing at 2nd base after a double. Nobody says a word to him. Apparently MLB is fine with the gun imagery as well. Unfortunately this latest incident is going to result in suspensions, not just of Gomez but likely for Maldanado too. Will be interesting from the standpoint there's no other catcher on the 40 man.
  2. The guy whose spot he took is likely Wooten. Remind me how he pitched last night. Right now you could argue he's taking Fiers' spot. As for Wooten, Wooten's toiled for years to get to the major leagues. He's a fringe pitcher but he knows how to pitch and is mature enough to handle a rough outing. If the Brewers consider themselves serious contenders, they can't afford to carry a pitcher they are afraid to use. I understand all the arguments about "developing a talent" etc. But is this season all about developing one guy who may or may not have a major league future, or is it about winning? Ten or so years ago it made some sense for them to try and develop a Matt Ford. The major league team wasn't going anywhere. This year's team has higher aspirations.
  3. Gennett has as many hits vs. lefties so far as Weeks does this season. The idea that he's completely useless vs. lefties based on 40 or so AB's last year is really overstated. In a lineup loaded with RH bats, they could live with Gennett playing everyday. Velez has been on fire at Nashville. He might be an option if Davis flounders. If Gindl can catch fire, he too might get a shot. Morris has been just ok. Weeks and Overbay are done. That's pretty simple. It might take each another 30 or so AB's to convince Brewer management though. But if they need a 40 man spot, those are the obvious spots.
  4. The pitcher is hitting behind him, so I have no problem with his approach and there was already one out. I don't think anyone can expect Maldanado to be able to execute hitting behind runners. He is what he is as a hitter. His one asset as a hitter is that he'll connect now and then. He's a lot better off not thinking up there.
  5. What's with the angst over 40 man spots? Weeks and Overbay are both eminently expendable. Hand Velez a 1st baseman's mitt and have him work over there. It's not like they haven't tried guys there before with no experience.
  6. The White Sox have the biggest need of those 3 teams so I wouldn't be surprised he ended up there.
  7. Yes...this is a double-edged sword though. I think the Brewers will be too close to competing this year to make a move of one of our 1-5. While I think this would be the most beneficial to the long term, I doubt Melvin would actually do this. In fact, I would be hesitant to do it unless it brought back a prospect or player that would be close to a guaranteed producer at 1B or 3B in the long term. Ultimately, I think Estrada may have more value to us than what we could realistically receive in any trade. I don't see us acquiring anything more than a Delmonico-type prospect. I think you are underestimating Estrada's value. The White Sox got Adam Eaton for Hector Santiago and Estrada's track record is more impressive than Santiago's. Not saying Eaton is great, but he's a decent leadoff hitter with on base skills.
  8. Notice that Coulter was 3 for 6 last night gunning down base runners attempting to steal. Also now 8 games behind the plate without a passed ball. Signs of progress to be sure.
  9. Velez has really torn it up since he came to Nashville, but he's kind of dogged by his 0 for 37 with the Dodgers in 2011. He's hit lefties well in AAA the last couple years. His numbers with the Giants in 08 and 09 were respectable when he was getting fairly regular playing time. They have a logjam at 1B in Nashville, but I'd be tempted to see how he does there too. As for roster spot on the 40 man, isn't it obvious?? He'd get Weeks' spot. As for paying Weeks to sit home, isn't that better than getting negative value out of him on the roster??
  10. Exactly, so far so good. He's slumped badly in the past week...lets wait and see. Morales is looking better by the day though that could change overnight.
  11. Bigger impact in the majors 5 years from now, Suter or Wang? My money's on Suter.
  12. Wang has no business in the big leagues taking a spot from a guy who's earned it. Cute idea in theory, but in practice it's a dumb one. I'd put Wang's chances of pitching in the big leagues after 2014 at less than 50-50. He's going to get mentally beat up by the big boys (see Matt Ford). There's a reason they have minor leagues. It's called player development. Wang needs development. Offer him back to Pittsburgh, and find your own young pitching the old fashioned way through scouting and development of your own guys. Geesh.
  13. Now might be a good time to offer Wang back to Pittsburgh. After that exhibition, they might say no thanks. I'm not a big fan of the whole idea. The last time the Brewers tried to "hide" a guy who obviously wasn't ready for the big leagues, Matt Ford, he never made it back to the big leagues. This is not good for the kid and it's not good for the Brewers.
  14. To all the Weeks defenders: Do you see him play?? It's not about a slump folks. He's heavy. He's slow. He can't drive in a run to save his life. Occasionally he still runs into one and looks like the old Weeks, but in between it's really hard to watch. What happened to him? Injuries? Complacency? Enjoying the spoils of a nice contract? Or all of the above? Nobody is expecting Scooter Gennett to be the next Charlie Gehringer (now really going old school, but look him up). But Gennett is a baseball player, with baseball instincts. You can just see it from how he handles himself. He's not big and strong so he'll never be a huge HR guy, but watch him swing. He generates pretty decent bat speed so he'll get one now and then and he makes enough contact that he'll likely carry at least a respectable BA. In the field he looks very comfortable too and shows plenty of range. The jury is out on whether he's a long term answer there but short term, he's earned it.
  15. Thornburg is a key guy in this pitching staff. His stuff is nasty. I was at the game today and the body language of the middle of the Cardinal order said it all. They looked like they knew they didn't have a chance. I think he'd do fine as a starter or reliever but he's way too valuable to be at Nashville right now. Don't wish to jinx him but he's pitched like an All Star to this point.
  16. Cubs being an "improving ball club" is a bit of a mirage. They weren't all that bad the first half the last couple years but come July they will again be unloading major league talent. In the meantime, their bullpen is plain awful and will keep them well under .500. Samardzija and possibly Hammel won't be around come August. Schierholtz and Bonafacio could both be gone as well. Cubs will be a team to be reckoned with in 2016 but not before. I'm not buying the Pirates either. They may play the Cards tough, but it's not a playoff team. Not this year.
  17. You have to like Rogers' splits vs. lefties at AA last year: .338/.408/.632. If he can hold his own defensively, I could see a platoon with Green who absolutely wore out RHP his big year at AAA in 2011: .351/.415/.616. If Green can approach those splits this year at AAA (he's 6 for 12 so far in 2014), I think they could be all right. Nor would I rule out Reynolds returning though he's a FA to be.
  18. Ramirez is an aggressive hitter and he's successful because he generally swings at strikes. Taking pitches down the middle and then swinging at pitches 6 inches off the plate or up and out of the zone or inside below the knees like Lucroy did last night isn't aggressive, it's undisciplined. Guys will have bad AB's and bad nights. But they need to avoid getting into bad habits, and when down by 3-4 runs, taking 2-0 and 3-1 isn't a bad idea.
  19. That ball that Weeks hit the other night where Davis failed to tag up might have been the best contact he's made with runners in scoring position in two years. I don't see any changes being imminent. Neither Weeks or Overbay is playing enough to make a definitive judgement until around Memorial Day. As long as they are winning, it's hard to argue they should be replaced. The best bat going at Nashville right now is Velez who is raking but who when he had a chance to show something in Arizona couldn't buy a hit. I can see them opting for the aging vet with experience over the career minor leaguer with a hot AAA bat.
  20. The Brewers without Braun and Ramirez for much of the year and with little to no production at 1B, still managed to outscore Pittsburgh 640-634 last year. Pittsburgh relied heavily on career years from several guys in their bullpen, one of whom was Melancon who the Brewer middle of the order whipped up on the other night. Pirate fans are pinning a lot of hopes on the Polanco kid giving their offense a big boost in a couple months.
  21. http://thisisgettingold.net/2014/04/12/game-11-pirates-vs-brewers-recap/ I'm sure he speaks for a lot of Pirate fans. I get MLB extra innings, and I chuckle how one playoff season has turned Pirate nation into thinking they are now a great team and entitled to multiple consecutive post season trips. They are shocked/dismayed that their old nemesis is back beating them as if 2013 didn't happen.
  22. I can imagine Doug's phone is going to start ringing if Fiers continues to dominate. A lot of teams out there could be in the market for a 5th starter.
  23. Barnes is a guy I'm keeping an eye on.
  24. Ramirez is a notorious first ball, fast ball hitter and has 1 walk this year in 51 PA, and oh yeah, not a bad career. I'm more concerned about Segura, not so much because he's not getting walks, but because he's hacking at stuff out of the zone a lot and his spot in the order is as a table setter.
  25. This is the course of action I'd follow. Lohse comes off the books in 2016 as well, but Estrada will be getting more costly. You think about extending one of those two perhaps, but all in all, a Garza type deal is about the Brewer ceiling for starting pitchers. To stay within budget ideally they need room for one or two pre arby starters in their rotation.
