  1. 26 man roster, not 28. ????? Infielders: Smoak/Braun, Hiura, Urias, Seager, Sogard, Healy Outfielders: Braun, Garcia, Cain, Gamel, Yelich Catchers: Narvaez, Pina 13 pitchers or 12 pitchers and a 3rd catcher
  2. Gio's comfort with Grandal might have been a factor going in his going to the Sox plus he's played there before.. Gio is the ultimate nibbler and he had success with Grandal. White Sox are more than legit contenders in the AL Central.
  3. Arcia for Seager straight up. Seager platoons with Healy at 3B.
  4. Now with Smoak aboard, do they go with Smoak mostly vs. righties and Braun vs. lefties at 1B, Hiura backed up by Arcia and Sogard at 2B. Either Urias or Arcia at SS, and Healy/Sogard to cover 3rd at least until July when they see if they can upgrade there? There seems to be more than enough depth in the OF and at catcher too. Heck Braun may only start 4 games a week, twice in the OF and twice at 1B. That should keep him healthy and they have ability to keep Yelich's back from acting up too with off days on occasion and Cain fresh by using Gamel in CF once or twice a week. Seems to me Stearns still needs to add at least one and possibly two relievers plus a couple more NRI guys. My guess is he doesn't make any big splash for a starting pitcher preferring to see what the market is in July. He's likely hoping a guy like Burns can re-establish value between the start of the season and July.
  5. He still walked 79 times and had an OBP of .342. His BABIP was ridiculously low in 2019. In 2018 he had an .867 OPS vs. RHP. I don't think they really were interested in bringing back Thames for whatever reason. Thames might not have been interested either.
  6. I'm not surprised at all that a team that saw him frequently picked him up. He's always done things you only appreciate by seeing in person. He's a very heads up player. I think if the right hitting coach comes along, he's got ability to hit better than he has the last couple years. It's hard to quantify what a glue guy gives to a team, but Perez was certainly that with Brewers. I'll be hoping he does well individually.
  7. I agree with the general sentiment of the article. The Brewers have lost a ton off their 2019 team and while they've added bodies, most come with qualifiers like "could be", "might be", and "hopefully". In all my years of watching baseball the teams with a lot of "if this guy comes through" usually end up losing a lot more than they win, especially now that only the Pirates aren't doing everything possible to win. Even some the guys they have coming back, like a Hauser, who's supposed to be a integral member of the rotation, has yet to prove it over an entire season and could turn the other way. There's some reason for hope certainly, but the chances it blows up big time and they are looking to sell in July, is higher than it's been the last few seasons.
  8. Mike Lamb is 44. He might be a tad past his prime. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lambmi01.shtml If you're thinking of Jake Lamb, he isn't a free agent. Senior moment! Corrected it. Didn't realize they tendered him but might be because they think they can get something back by tendering him and then dealing him. He's without a position on the D Backs/
  9. I don't see any way the Indians trade Ramirez. He's under very team friendly control through 2023. I think Stearns has clearly pared down the 3B targets to LH hitters. The Healy signing indicates he's even more focused on a lefty hitter who kills RHP but needs to sit vs. LHP. Jake Lamb has a career .814 OPS vs. RHP and a career .594 OPS vs. LHP. Lamb was an All Star as recently as 2017. He's only 29. No reason to think he can't be helped by a change of scenery.
  10. I'm guessing now Stearns deals for Jake Lamb and platoons him with Healy. He's hoping he'll get their 2916-17 versions.
  11. I seem to recall a certain poster bringing up his name as early as October. Where's my finder's fee David? Somebody tell his agent "You're welcome"
  12. With the signing of Garcia, and having Braun see time at 1B, seems to me the logical move is to bring in a part time 1B with pop to share time at 1B with Braun. Yeah they could wait on Thames, but why not Matt Adams? Nats paid him $4 million including his option buyout last year. That seems like a number that fits easily into Brewer payroll situation and fair value for a guy like Adams. Adams has been up and down but he's got big time power from the left side, something the Brewers lack outside of Yelich.
  13. Garcia is in his prime and has been solid performer for 2 of his last 3 seasons. He won't play everyday. Heck Yelich sits due to back issues occasionally. His strikeout rate isn't horrific like Santana's for instance. He's always been an underachiever in the power department but he's likely to produce 20 HR in 450-500 AB's and that could spike at any time. I still think they need a lefty bat to play significant time at 1B. Perhaps they're waiting on Thames or maybe they'll grab a Matt Adams.
  14. It doesn't by itself, but D-Backs have also been linked to Castellanos who's going to command something close to what Bumgarner got and they certainly would then be motivated to cut some salary elsewhere.
  15. I'd take Ryu. I think they could get close to Donaldson's production for a lot less but to be serious contenders they need a top starter and they won't find that in the bargain bin
  16. Manfred seemed to react gleefully to the outrageous contracts and the widening gap between the haves and the have not franchises. Whereas Bud always advocated for smaller markets being able to stay competitive, Manfred seems to me to be solely a big market commissioner. He apparently wants to turn MLB into the NBA who's regular season is a yawn. That'll mean a big spike in 100+ win teams and lots of teams losing 100 plus.
  17. Look Garcia was very highly regarded early in his career. Much more so than Santana. He spent very little time in the higher minors, but destroyed AAA pitching at a very young age. The White Sox thought they were getting a future star when they traded for him in 2013. They were patient with him but he frustrated them, showing flashes but not the consistency and his power never developed to the levels expected of him. Could he be the next Nelson Cruz, who blossoms later? That's probably not going to happen but is he a serviceable semi regular corner outfielder? Absolutely, and there still might be untapped upside in the right situation
  18. Let's be realistic. Seager and Belt might be overpaid, but they're not Zach Cozart bad so they'd only get a more marginal prospect. I personally think Seager is a great fit for the Brewers and Belt's not bad either. You can argue all you want, that Thames is just as good, but strictly on ability going forward, I'd prefer Belt. Seager is the only decent LH hitting 3B out there available in trade and if the Brewers got him, even at a fairly hefty price, they won't need to find a more expensive LH hitting 1B. They could just let Braun play the bulk of the time, maybe bring in a Matt Adams at a bargain price, and they're fine and then sign Garcia to fill the gap in the OF. Seager is capable of close to Moustakas production.
  19. Milwaukee has to recycle it’s talent to compete. They can’t sign top free agents and it’s looking like they won’t even sign middle of the road free agent starting pitchers. Remember a few years ago when the Brewers were desperately trying to win and held onto the best players for awhile, guys like Lucroy and Gomez? Did eventually trading them kill this team? No, it got them to where they are today. Had they hung onto those guys they would have continued their slow descent to mediocrity. Trading Hader is not going to kill us and it’s not even remotely similar to trading Yelich. Hader's controllable through 2023. He's not comparable to Gomez or Lucroy's situation. I'd hold on to him for 2 more years and they can still get a haul.
  20. I think it behooves them to find a LH corner infield bat in addition to Garcia whether that guy plays 3B or 1B and platoons with Braun. Adding Garcia frees them up to include Tyrone Taylor in a deal if they want to take on salary for a guy like Belt to play 1B or Seager to play 3B.
  21. I'm fine with the signing. He's had recent success on a winning team Market under values pitch to contact guys. I'm more worried about corner infield spots. Defense at 3B now a bigger priority.
  22. Have to include some other names that are more or less bargain bin specials: Hunter Pence Domingo Santana Melky Cabrera Jon Jay Kevin Pillar Not sure if any of the top FA see a clear path to playing time unless Brewers commit to Braun as primarily a 1B and if they do that, and get a RH hitting 3B, then the focus is on Dickerson or Calhoun. I'd love Castellanos, but he's going to command some decent money and he's an everyday player, not a platoon option.
  23. If you watched the Cubs much after he arrived there (and I did living in Chicago area), you'd never had known his defense was seen as a major issue in Detroit. It simply wasn't in his time as a Cub and RF is a tough sun field in Wrigley especially late in the season. He got to the balls he should have and didn't misplay them when he got there. Once he got on a contending team, both his offense and defense picked up. That's not all that unusual. Part of defending relating to getting jumps is concentration. Playing in big games tends to improve concentration.
  24. Mariners are reportedly shopping Seager. He checks the boxes for the Brewers. Hits left handed. Had a rebound from a lousy 2018. Shouldn't cost much in talent back given an inflated contract. Should be able to get Mariners to kick in some money. Positives: Higher career WAR than Moustakas Very consistent power that could get a boost in Milwaukee Wants to play for a winning organization Solid defender A left handed bat who'll balance out if they go for a RH first baseman No long term commitment Brother of Corey who's a FA in 2022 Negatives: One year removed from career worst season Solid but nothing special though is paid like he is Expensive depending on how much Mariners pick up.
  25. You nailed it. The Brewers don't make the playoffs in either 2018 or 2019 without Moustakas and it's likely now they won't in 2020 with him gone. Stearns failed to foresee that the market would be thin for 3B in 2019-2020 and should have locked in Moose for 3 years last offseason when he clearly could have been had for 3/45. Part of that calculation of course was the thought that Shaw would still be a productive power bat. To top it off, he inadvertently increased Moose's market value by playing him at 2B which was totally unnecessary. All that being said, they still could have afforded what the Reds gave him. Now their alternatives are to fork over even more to sign a Donaldson or watch their playoff window slammed shut. All this smoke about a Hader trade is a sign they realize they might have blew it. This offseason to date has been terribly discouraging. It's almost as if ownership decided to cash in on two playoff seasons by taking a big profit in 2020 and trusting that the fans would still show up. Right now they look a lot like last years 90 loss Angels team. Yeah they still have a MVP caliber player but not nearly enough around him. When it's all said and done, the biggest miscalculation was not locking in Moose last year, and compounding that by not paying him what the market dictated this year. Brewer nation deserves better than that.
