  1. That isn't a bad idea. I was thinking the other day that we could really beef up Weeks' value if he learned how to play CF, and still continue to start some games at 2B as well. Kind of like a Mark DeRosa type player. Get a few starts at 2B each week, and a couple in CF as well. He's been used really well since Durham came aboard (not facing tough RH'ers), and if he could play multiple positions the team could realistically semi-platoon him like this. That's not really what I had in mind GI. Finding a spot for Escobar next season will involve movement of players either to other positions or via trade. Assuming no trades, and no Cameron, CF is open. Moving Weeks there would be to get him in the lineup batting leadoff where he's been ok since midseason. He's not Mark De Rosa. He has trouble playing one position at a time. You wouldn't want him switching back and forth. 2B would either be manned by Hardy, or Hardy could go to 3B with 2B being manned by Hall in a platoon with someone, perhaps Durham if they brought him back.
  2. I like the move too but whether it was Parra, Mclung or whoever, at this point anyone not named Sheets or Sabathia should be on a very short leash. You can't let your starter dig a 5 or 6 run hole in the first couple innings. What I like about the move is that is it gives Sveum the ability against lefthanded lineups to make his first move to a lefthander. Say the Reds stack their lineup against Suppan Friday with 5 or 6 lefties, and Suppan allows 3 or runs in the first couple innings. Get him out of there and bring in Parra who'd have favorable matchups and should be able to keep the game under control.
  3. They need Durham's lefthanded bat in there vs. righthanders. There's no question I'd rather have both of them in the lineup right now. But they both play the same position. I'd look for Weeks to CF idea to be revived this offseason. I'm not sure that will mean they'd bring back Ray or move Hardy, but I don't see Weeks at 2B next season. Cameron's horrid September should end any talk of bringing him back next season at $10 million. The guy looks done to me.
  4. Mark Grace? He's more interested in partying. Don Mattingly? Did we not learn that coaching on winning teams doesn't make you a good manager? Kevin Kennedy? He hasn't managed in 12 years. That nobody has hired him speaks volumes. Showalter makes some sense. He's had some success. But Brenly makes the most sense. Lets examine Brenly's record in Arizona: 2001: 92-70 2002: 98-64 2003: 84-78 2004: 29-50 After he was fired, that team got considerably worse going 22-61 the rest of the way. Remember that team had lost Schilling and sent 6 players to the Brewers for Sexson who got hurt and missed most of the year He won it all in 2001 with a really non-descript lineup: Aging Mark Grace at 1B, Jay Bell at 2B, Tony Womack at SS, Matt Williams at 3B, Luis Gonzalez in LF, Steve Finley in CF Reggie Sanders in RF, and Damian Miller at C. Yes he had Schilling and Johnson, but the rest of that rotation was really mediocre and their closer, Kim had 19 saves. There are no guys out there other than Brenly who've won a World Championship in this decade, have a winning overall record, know the NL Central, are under 80 years old, and are available.
  5. Jack Z indeed might be a great choice, but drafting and player development are only part of a GM's job. I think Melvin's job might hinge on making the playoffs. If they do, he's likely safe. If not MA might go for a complete overhaul. Melvin is responsible for putting together this roster and it's not performed in crunch time.
  6. My speculation but figure it out yourself. Brenly is eminently qualified having won a title in a smaller market. Yount coached for and is still close to Brenly. Brenly has seen up close the NL Central for 4 years now. He's also watched Piniella up close. None of those other guys, Mattingly, Johnson, Valentine, etc. have NL Central knowledge. Finally, what would cause Yount to come in for two weeks? Perhaps loyalty to Sveum but more likely that he's been told Brenly will be the guy.
  7. Brenly is the front runner. The fact Yount agreed to come in and coach is a clear indication that Brenly is in the mix. My guess is Yount is being brought in as Brenly's surrorgate and confidant to assess the roster over the final two weeks.
  8. Yount serving as bench coach. I think the permanent manager may well end up being Bob Brenly. Just a hunch that Yount's being brought in as a Brenly confidant and surrogate. Brenly having won with Arizona and watched Piniella close up for 2 years would be a very interesting choice. A lot of uproar is the timing of this move. But if you analyze it, it becomes clear. Attanasio lives in LA but he's a NY guy. Getting swept by both Mets and Phillies could not have set well with him. I think he came to the conclusion he didn't want Yost back next year, but he had to pre-empt the possibility that Ned would squeak them in and force his hand to either keep him against his better judgement or fire the first manager to take this team to the playoffs in 26 years. So pull the plug now and get it done.
  9. jackalope02ca, Sure the bullpen's had it's problems but all you need to do is look at the September splits for the following hitters and you'll see the real problem: Cameron, Hart, Hall, Braun, Hardy, Kendall, Fielder. All have underperformed during this slide, and save Hardy and Fielder, have underperformed by an alarming amount.
  10. When Yost stated in midseason basically "We're a home run hitting team, it's what we do.", he was accurate but the players heard this: "Go up there hacking boys". No team in all of baseball needs more work on fundamentals of hitting, thinking along with the pitcher, hitting the ball where it's pitched, recognizing situations, etc. But to me it was his playing of favorites. Kendall's been OK this year, but he's not Johnny Bench. There's no reason for him to start nearly 150 games. Mentally and physically, and I don't care what he says, Kendall has to be fried. No way he's thinking clearly enough to be that big of an advantage to the pitching staff either.
  11. They stopped playing for Yost. I think that cost him more this year than his in game moves. He lost control of the team by playing favorites, holding some guys accountable and not other guys. Playing Kendall in both games of a day/night doubleheader might have been the last straw. He never put his foot down and demanded players exercise discipline at the plate. I suspect Sveum is just a temp move unless he gets them in the playoffs. I also expect after the season both Skaalen and Maddux will be looking for work.
  12. If the reason you dump Kremblas is to move up Money, why not go all the way and dump Yost and move Money to Milwaukee?
  13. The bright side: Sabathia and Sheets will start 6 of the final 12 games. The Cubs will have locked up division by final weekend, and could be starting guys like Marshall, Randy Wells and Kevin Hart the final weekend. If somehow Sabathia can outduel Dempster who's only been so-so his last 3 starts, and Sheets can beat Jason Marquis, then they'll still have a pulse and at least some positive momentum. Yost should then replace Parra and piggyback McLung and Villanueva on Thursday.
  14. I think both Yost and Melvin have to go. The reasons Melvin needs to depart may not be as clear but I'll list them: 1. Failure to draft, develop, or trade for young bullpen arms. 2. Overreaction to pitching injuries in 2006, leading to the overvaluing of durability in the free agent market. 3. Not firing Yost after 2007. 4. Failure to acquire a lefthanded bat for 2008 that would balance off a terribly unbalanced lineup. 5. Signing Turnbow and Hall to long term deals. 6. Hiring Yost in 2003. 7. Signing Eric Gagne. 8. Overvaluing durability in the FA catcher market in 2008. The Brewers had a great window of opportunity in 2007 and 2008. Of course it's not all Melvin's and Yost's fault. The players including a star who was focusing on his conforming his eating habits to please his PC wife instead of improving as a player had a lot to do with it too. But as the old saying goes you can't fire 25 guys.
  15. In the context of playing on a team full of strikeout guys (and this is the key point), it does devalue him russ and he's not worth $10 million on the open market. $7 million tops. But he's worth less than that to a Brewer team because the Brewers need to balance off Hart, Hardy, Braun, Hall and Weeks, with as Melvin said early last offseason a "professional lefthanded bat". He finally got one close to that in Durham (who's held up while the team collapses around him), but he needs one to play OF. Now if they were to deal Hart for a similar type who bats lefthanded, fine bring Cameron back. But as the team is currently constituted, they'd be better off getting either a corner OF lefthanded bat and moving Hart or finding a speed, contact guy to play CF.
  16. There's streets flooded all over Chicago area and the rain is coming in buckets. Been living in this area over 30 years. Ranks with the worst I've ever seen. Might be better on south side, so Sox have some hope of getting at least one in.
  17. If the forecast holds, heavy rains are expected all day today and Sunday in Chicago, jeopardizing the entire Sox/Tigers series. There's also more rain expected all over the eastern half of US this weekend. They might just be better off extending the season a couple days.
  18. lcbj68c, When I originally expressed my doubts, I was paying no attention to who the poster was. I doubted the story not the person posting it because I had read that MP was unavailable in the earlier story. I just figured it was a rumor. Had I intended to question your integrity I would have quoted your post or referred to you by your handle. I did neither. I just figured you heard a rumor. If you want to take issue with any of my posts, feel free to do so, but in responding to mine, you just made a general rip. Look I'll admit some of my posts aren't that great but many are very well thought out and presented if I do say so myself.
  19. He's said several times on this board that he works at Miller Park.Who reads every post? How hard would it have been to mention this when more than one poster asked him for a source? Especially concerning a story where it is certainly relevant.
  20. Ha, Nice. My integrity is taking a hit. I apologize to all, I made it up out of thin air. I had nothing better to do. Brewers discussion is boring with the rainout and all and I wanted to watch a real playoff contender in Milwaukee this weekend. Mr. Briggs, I'm sorry I wasted the time you took to read this thread. Please don't come back tomorrow with a different tune and offer any insight as to the series being moved, what you think it offers to MLB or the clubs in particular, or the fans of these teams and baseball. Just stick with the one-liners about what you believe/doubt about me and my integrity, because it was obvious it greatly contributed to the content here at Brewerfan.net. In the mean time, I'll go ahead and add another dimension to the conversation that I am interested in how this also affects the pitching matchups for the Brewers/Cubs for next week. I haven't yet heard if they are just playing two and will wait and schedule the 3rd game for Sept. 29th should it be neccessary, or whether we will see a doubleheader? If so, 3 games in two days with no off day makes the starting pitching quite a mess and an overhaul from what they might have been planing to throw against the Brewers. How can I possibly question your integrity when I don't know who you are? Maybe next time you have inside information you might want to reveal how you got it? You posted something with no reference at all. As has been noted it was published earlier in the day that MP was not an option. So you were right. Good for you.
  21. I've seen nothing on this report and completely doubt it's validity. Down here in Chicago, they said nothing would be announced until Saturday afternoon at the earliest.
  22. I don't see them signing a "Mark Loretta type" to fill Counsell's role if by "Mark Loretta type, you mean one time starter with some name value that will cost a fair bit. They will try to get by more with a "Chris Woodward type" who can do that role for near minimum.
  23. Translation of Corey Hart's statement: We were tight playing at home. It's less stressful playing in front of fans that aren't expecting anything of you. My problem with his statement: It might be less stressful playing on the road but your playing better teams so relaxed or not, winning games isn't going to be any easier so just shut up and play. Going forward I have real concerns about the overall toughness of this group. Maybe the core of young players who, with the possible exception of Hardy, were horrible on this last homestand has been coddled too much by this organization.
  24. The good news in all this is that it should impact both teams rotations.
