  1. Only if it's a clear upgrade and that's what I think the Brewers see. Arcia still has ability to hit and hit good pitching but lacks consistency. If he finds it, and he puts up numbers like he did in 2017, then he's fine.
  2. With a 26 man roster and two catchers over 30, one of whom spends time at 1B, it makes sense to go with 3 catchers. Speaking of which, why no mention of Steven Vogt returning? He had a really nice year for the Giants and his power plays better in Miller Park. Yes he's 35, but this team got pretty far with 38 year old Eric Kratz in 2018. I see no issue with older catchers in 2020. Feliciano and Henry are both prospects who are getting close. Nottingham's future looks more like as a backup.
  3. I don't see any mention of Didi Gregorius as a possibility. He had a down year for sure, but there's no reason to think at 30 he can't bounce back and he may be looking for a one year deal to restore his market. Of course the Yankees could give him the QO and he might accept it.
  4. So that's another hole to fill which was my point exactly. Trading Aguilar for just a another disposable arm still has me scratching my head. It wasn't like Jesus had sunk to Shaw type levels.
  5. Don't forget, if Grandal leaves, that leaves Austin as the RH portion of the 1B platoon. He does have nice numbers against LHP in his career, but he strikes out a ton even by today's standards.
  6. You don't trade the face of your franchise after the first back to back postseason appearances in more than a generation fueled in large part by his excellence. There may come a time down the road when it makes sense but not now.
  7. As far as the stadium issue, there's perfectly fine stadiums currently home to independent league teams. Schaumburg and Rosemont in the Chicago area are two prime examples. Instead of cutting hundreds of jobs in affiliated ball, why not put teams in those places?
  8. Great team guy. He accepted utility role even after putting up solid numbers at 25 in 2016 as a semi-regular. I think eventually the sporadic playing time got to him offensively. He was putting a ton of pressure on himself with runners in scoring position this year. You could almost sense it. It might be too late, but if a rebuilding team ever stuck him in a lineup on a daily basis, I think you'd see a much more productive hitter. Will eventually be on the Brewer wall though and he deserves it. Coaching/managing might be in his future.
  9. I could live with Narvaez. Even with his defensive shortcomings, B-R had him with a 2.1 overall WAR, and last year was the only year they rated his defense with a negative WAR. Have to like that Narvaez has improved with the bat every year. Another option is Castro, who posted an .851 OPS vs. RHP last year, though he slumped noticeably in the 2nd half.
  10. Ditto. The last thing this team needs if it's going all in is dead money and losing a premier bat with the kind of control Hiura. It's not enough return to get them over the hump and almost assures a fire sale rebuild in 2022.
  11. Is Desmond worth a look if Rockies pick up most of his remaining salary? He did post a .977 OPS vs. LHP in 2019.
  12. Yeah but Dodgers haven't won it all in more than 30 years and the frustration is palpable for a franchise with extremely high expectations. It doesn't have to be a straight up Hader for Lux deal. Brewers have a lot of guys who fall in the "sweetener" category.
  13. How does Jackson's contract supercede major league rules regarding FA? Jackson isn't even eligible for arbitration until 2022. i'm going to guess that he had some leverage in playing overseas for a number of years, just as eric thames had in negotiating his contract with the brewers (i.e. thames can declare free agency next year even though he won't have six years of major league service). I can't imagine any player signing a minor league contract having that kind of leverage.

  15. Minor League Baseball is entertainment and very popular. It doesn't exist solely for major league player development. It gives opportunities for many players not deemed as sure fire future major leaguers as adolescents a chance to play and showcase their skills in competition.
  16. Not crazy if they find a way to keep Moustakas. If it were easily solvable, why did he still look as lost at the end of the season? Look I don't think Shaw has much value if he becomes a FA. No contending team would take him. Even rebuilding clubs would structure a heavily incentive laden deal with a low base. I don't think investing under $4 million in Nelson is a bad idea. His last couple appearances, his stuff was nasty and he might play very well as a late inning reliever if that's his focus from day one.

  18. Cole Hamels is supposedly interested in staying in the NL Central even if the Cubs don't re-sign him. He's got very good career numbers vs. St. Louis, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. He was arguably the Cubs best starter in the first half prior to his missing time with an oblique.
  19. He plays half his time at SS right now. He did play a passable SS. Most scouts thought he could stick at SS if his bat played. He got moved the 2B because we had no 2B and a great young SS. Villar wasn't passable at SS and just marginally passable at 2B. He puts up decent numbers but his K rate is much higher than Arcia's. I've always felt that Arcia's issue is that his concentration wavers from AB to AB. His career BA with runners on is .267. It's .225 with the bases empty. That's a significant difference.
  20. A better way might be to go after not so young controllable players. Garrett Cooper turns 29 in December, so it's highly questionable if Miami sees him as a core player of their rebuild, but he'd be a nice fit on this Brewer team as a RH bat with ability to play 1B and corner OF.
  21. Made my annual trip to Lambeau for the Eagles game. Not much to add to the ridiculous pass interference discussion. Officiating in the NFL is the worst of any pro sport. I have a suggestion for the Packers regarding the fan experience. Can they please, please get rid of that juvenile PA cheerleader crap? I can't stand a guy insulting my football intelligence by screaming at me to get loud. Fans know when to get loud. They don't need some idiot who sounds like he's on meth telling them to get loud. Give me the down and distance only. That would make the game so much more enjoyable.
  22. Long ago I realized the fun is the journey. If they do win it all in my lifetime, sure I'll enjoy it, but wake up the next day feeling kind of sad that the season is over. It won't take long for the sting of last night's loss to fade and I'll turn my attention to their building for next year. That's why I hate the idea of a team going into an extended rebuild. Seasons are precious. At 67, who knows how many I have left. I want my teams competing. This Brewer team competed right down to the last out of the season. I was thoroughly entertained.
  23. His command was off but he sawed the bat off of Zimmermann's hands and it fell in for a hit. Most of the time that becomes and easy out and the inning ends.
  24. Grandal's role next year and beyond if he stuck with Brewers would shift more to 1B as it did after the Aguilar trade. Feliciano could be ready by 2021, and Thames has just one more year of control.
  25. Personally I think the weekend worked out fine. At least Counsell was able to save the guys he needs to combat the Nats. Had they played Monday and lost, they would have been it a very tough spot trying to beat Scherzer. Now he can use any and all of the arms that got them to this point and even if Scherzer is on, they can wait him out and beat up their shaky pen.
